Mist eliminatorsDesign principles and typesMist eliminators are employed atthe top of a packed column or inconjunction with a collecting traybetween two packed beds. They separate liquid droplets fromthe gas stream. Droplet dischargefrom the column and/or the liquidentrainment from one stage to thenext is minimized.Wire mesh mist eliminator(Type M950)Droplet separation is achievedutilizing the mass inertia of theliquids. For this reason, dropletremoval efficiency declines withsmaller droplet diameter.Wire mesh mist eliminatorsoperate by droplet coalescence. As the droplets hit the mesh, they stick to the wires and grow. They are able to discharge from themist eliminator via gravity. Thesemist eliminators are recommendedfor systems where no solidsbuildup is expected. In vane type mist eliminators, thegas flow is deflected several timeson guide plates so that the liquiddroplets impinge on impact. Theythen flow from these surfaces in adownward direction.Vane type mist eliminator(Type M960)Scaling of solids can be avoidedor reduced with the use of spraynozzles located above or belowthe mist eliminator.3

Wire mesh mist eliminatorsM950 / P950Wire diameter, surface area, mesh thickness, and interfacialsurface tension between the fibreand the collected liquid are theprimary variables to consider inspecifying a wire mesh pad.Wire mesh mist eliminatorsprovide a high separationefficiency at the lowestinstallation costs. They are usually comprisedof multiple, compressed layersof thermoplastic or metal wire, and deliver excellent resultsover a broad range of gas/liquid separation tasks. It is also possible to combine wiremesh mist eliminators with vanetype ones. These combined systemshelp to optimize the benefits ofindividual types of equipment andimprove overall performance.A good design starting point wire mesh mist eliminatorsIn this case, the mesh serves asa preconditioner to the fine mistgas, forming larger droplets (coalescence) for the vane type mistelimination process. Our wire mesh mist eliminatorsare made in any size and shapefrom a wide range of materials, both metal and non-metal.Among others PP, PFA, ECTE,ETFE, PVC, steel, alloys, andtitanium.RainDropDrizzleMistFogDifferent droplet sizesdifferent mist eliminatoroptionsIn a broader sense, droplet sizedetermines the type of mist eliminator to be used in a process.Wire mesh mist eliminatorsWhereas mesh type misteliminators target smaller dropletdiameters using direct interception, vane type mist eliminators are thecorrect choice for larger diameters, setting up a barrier for the inertialimpact with the droplets.Vane type mist eliminatorsFiber bedmist eliminators5002001005020105Particle Diameter (µm)4Wire mesh mist eliminatorout of fine grain silver withan open area grid out of PTFE210,5To make the best choice for yourparticular application, expertsfrom RVT Process Equipment willhelp at each step from design toconstruction.

Vane type mist eliminatorsM960 / P960To ensure a reliable operationof your column, it is essentialto choose the right design andmaterial of your mist eliminator.RVT offers many design variationsand each can be adjusted to yourspecific needs, includingdifferences in:Vane spacingNumber of bendsAngle of bendsCapture hooksDrainage hooksA metal double-pocket M960-RH900high-performance vane type mist eliminator.Besides the various designs,RVT also offers mist eliminators constructed out of different materials. The most common are any form ofmetal or plastic. Our specialists will advise the mostsuitable material for your application.Available materials include, but arenot restricted to:Polyethylene (PE)Polypropylene (PP)Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)Stainless steelCarbon steelThe P960-RV400 is a RVT standard profilefor a vertical gas flow.Nickel-based alloysTitaniumOther special materials availableupon request5

Vertical or horizontalGas flow optionsVane type mist eliminators can be installed in a variety of ways:Vertically, horizontally, or at any other angle. In most cases, gas flow iseither vertically upwards, with the liquid draining counter-current to thegas flow, or horizontally sidewards, with the liquid draining in a directionperpendicular to the gas flow.Vertical flowIn vane type mist eliminators witha vertical gas flow the vanes arearranged horizontally or in a rooftype installation at a slight angle tothe horizontal.Since the gas flows in anupward direction, the vanes mustbe designed so that certain regionsare bypassed by the gas flow. In thisway, zones are created in which thedroplets can be collected withoutinteraction with the gas. These zones also provide a securedivergence of the collected liquidfrom the surface of the vanes. As the liquid flows in the oppositedirection to the gas, the film of liquidthat forms on the vane has to beconverted back to droplets. To prevent re-entrainment of liquid, the newly formed droplets mustbe substantially larger than thosecarried into the separator by the gas.Typical vertical flow misteliminators are:RV200RV271RV400Vertical flow at the RV200 type profileHorizontal flowVane type mist eliminators forhorizontal gas flow consist of alinear row of vertical vanes. When the flow of gas is horizontal, the vanes stand vertically and theliquid film that occurs flows downon them. The provision of calmedregions behind the phase-separationchambers allow the liquid to drain offwithout making contact with the gas.Typical horizontal flow misteliminators are:RH 100Horizontal flow at the RH100 type profileRH 200RH 300RH 50XRH 60X6

The exit section of the first mist eliminator chevron shall be constructed with a straightening section and/or oriented such that the flue gas leaves in the essentially the same direction as it entered the mist eliminator.

Mist eliminators have evolved over the years from packed bed types to knittedmesh mist collectors. Knitted mesh mist eliminators achieve much greaterefficiency than the packed bed types where dumped packing is used as acollection device and impingement types where wave-like plates are used tocollect mist.
