First Time SetupUser’s GuideIntroductionThe Symetrix 304 Headphone Amplifier is a 1-in / 4-outamplifier designed to drive multiple headphones of anyimpedance. Symetrix proprietary high voltage drivetechnology gives the 304 the ability to drive high impedanceheadphones with the equivalent output voltage of a muchlarger power amplifier, yet provides more than amplecurrent for low impedance phones. The four stereo outputsautomatically adjust output power to match the loadimpedance.with a stereo input provides a quick check of the monocompatibility of a stereo mix. For that matter, you may wantto monitor in mono.As a mono amplifier, one signal fed to either input will feedboth out puts. Also in mono mode, when two different monosignals are fed to the left and right inputs, they will be mixedto feed both the left and right outputs. The inputs are electronically balanced, but will operatenormally in an unbalanced configuration when 2-conductor1/4 inch plugs are inserted. The outputs are 1/4 inch stereoconnectors.Controls provided are input level, output level for eachindividual amplifier, and a stereo/mono switch. The Stereo/Mono switch allows the amplifier to be usedseveral ways. As a “normal” stereo amplifier (with fouroutputs), the left and right inputs are used for stereo signals, which feed the left and right outputs. Switching to monoFast First Time SetupWiringGo!To install the 304:Set the individual level controls to minimum (max ccwrotation). Set the master level control to the halfway position(12 noon). Set the stereo/mono switch as appropriate.Plug the PS-3 power supply’s DIN connector into the 304.Plug the PS-3 into a suitable source of AC power. Refer tothe labelling on the PS-3 to determine what is suitable. With the source signal active, adjust the individual levelcontrols for comfortable listening levels.Connect your source to the 304’s tip-ring-sleeve input jacks. The inputs are balanced. They will work with either balancedor unbalanced sources.Warning: The 304 is capable of driving manyheadphones past the threshold of pain. This can alsoresult in hearing damage. For your own hearinghealth, monitor at the lowest SPL that you canuse and still get the job done.Connect your headphones to the four output jacks. The 304can handle headphone impedances ranging from 8 Ohms toover 2000 Ohms. 60 Ohm headphones are optimal (they getthe loudest). It is not necessary for each set of headphonesto be the same (although it might help if they were).6408 216th Street SW Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043 USAT 1.425.778.7728 F 1.425.778.7727 www.SymetrixAudio.com4

Using the 304User’s GuideImpedance, Sensitivity, LoudnessIf low and high impedance headphones are combined on thesame channel, the low impedance headphones will be muchlouder. As a result, when a combination of high impedanceand low impedance headphones is used, only those oflike impedance should be used on the same channel. Thisallows each listener to properly adjust loudness, withoutregard to the impedance and sensitivity of the other head phones. (It’s ok to mix impedances on the same amplifier, it’sjust not optimum. You won’t hurt anything.)Loudness is directly related to the impedance andsensitivity of the headphones. Impedance determines howmuch power the headphones will draw, while sensitivityindicates how much of the electrical signal delivered to theheadphones is converted into sound.Because low impedance headphones draw more powerfrom the am plifier they will sound louder, at the samecontrol settings, than high impedance headphones. Also, headphones of higher sensitivity will sound louder than thoseof lower sensitivity. Check the manufacturer’s spec sheet forimpedance and sensitivity information.Maximum Amplifier LoadThe minimum operating impedance, or maximum load, for each output of the 304 is 8 Ohms. Use as many pairsof headphones as desired, as long as the total combinedimpedance (per output) does not fall below 8 Ohms. Table 1shows how many headphones of various impedances maybe used with each output of the 304.Proprietary high voltage driver technology allows the 304 todrive even high impedance headphones to maximum levels,be cause the amplifiers are capable of very high outputvoltage swing. However, to get a loudness equivalent tothat of low impedance head phones, the controls will haveto be set to higher settings when using high impedanceheadphones. This is normal.Table 1 - Combined Impedance Values(approx. 8)Impedance of HeadphonesMaximum Number/Channel8 (see note 1)1162324100102002040040600606408 216th Street SW Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043 USAT 1.425.778.7728 F 1.425.778.7727 www.SymetrixAudio.com6

Applications304 Headphone AmplifierThe 304 can be used in the following applications. Please note that this list is far from comprehensive and yourimagination may create new uses that we haven’t listed here.Project Studio:Broadcast:Live Sound:House of Worship:BalancedLine Driver:Let the 304 expand your mixer’s headphone capacity. You can drive it via atip-ring-sleeve to dual tip-sleeve cable from your mixer’s headphone jack,or from one or two of your mixer’s aux sends. If you only use one aux send, then press the stereo/mono switch to route the signal to both channels.Use the 304 to drive the guest headphones in your studio. Doesyour console have an anemic headphone amplifier?Does your console have an anemic headphone amplifier?Create assistive listening stations at several pews. Drive the 304with a mixture of the sound reinforcement signal and a roommicrophone. No, this isn’t as sophisticated as one of the RF orinfrared systems, but it doesn’t cost like they do either! Here’s how to use the 304 as a one-in, four out balanced line amplifier.Make a “Y” cable so that you can drive both inputs in parallel. Wire the plug forthe right-channel input so that it is reverse polarity from the left-channel input.Connect your source to the “Y” cable’s input. Connect each of your balancedloads to the tip-ring-sleeve output connectors. The tip connection is hot.7
