This field mayinterfere with some pacemakers. Such objectsmay ricochet and then hit the operator.Clothing and EquipmentWear proper protective clothing andequipment.Clothing must be sturdybut allow complete freedom of movement. Wearsnug-fitting clothing, anoverall and jacket combination, do not wear awork coat.WARNINGTo reduce the risk of eyeinjuries, wear snug-fittingsafety glasses in accordance with EuropeanStandard EN 166. Makesure the safety glassesare a good fit.Wear a face shield and make sure it is agood fit. A face shield alone does notprovide adequate eye protection.Wear hearing protection, e.g. earplugsor ear muffs.Wear robust work glovesmade of durable material(e.g. leather).STIHL offers a comprehensive range ofpersonal protective clothing andequipment.Transporting the Power ToolAvoid clothing that could get caught onbranches or brush or moving parts of themachine. EnglishIn vehicles: Properly secure your powertool to prevent turnover, fuel spillage anddamage.FuelingGasoline is an extremelyflammable fuel. Keepclear of naked flames. Donot spill any fuel – do notsmoke.Before Starting–Check that your power tool is properlyassembled and in good condition – referto appropriate chapters in the instructionmanual.Check protective devices (e.g.deflector for cutting attachment) fordamage or wear. Always replacedamaged parts. Never operate theunit with a damaged deflector.–Never attempt to modify the controlsor safety devices in any way.–Keep the handles dry and clean –free from oil and dirt – for safecontrol of the power tool.–Adjust the harness and handle(s) tosuit your height and reach.–Always shut off the engine beforerefueling.Do not fuel a hot engine – fuel may spilland cause a fire.Open the fuel cap carefully to allow anypressure build-up in the tank to releaseslowly and avoid fuel spillage.4If you use a shoulder strap or fullharness: Practice removing and puttingdown the power tool as you would in anemergency. To avoid damage, do notthrow the machine to the ground whenpracticing.Use only an approved combinationof cutting attachment, deflector,handle and harness. All parts mustbe assembled properly andsecurely. To reduce the risk ofinjury, never use metal cuttingattachments.–The stop switch must move easily to0.–Check smooth action of chokeknob, throttle trigger lockout andthrottle trigger – the throttle triggermust return automatically to the idleposition. The choke lever mustspring back from the g and positions to the run position F whenthe throttle trigger lockout andthrottle trigger are squeezed.Start the engine at least 3 meters fromthe fueling spot, outdoors only.–Check that the spark plug boot issecure – a loose boot may causearcing that could ignite combustiblefumes and cause a fire.–Check cutting attachment forcorrect and secure assembly andgood condition.Your power tool is a one-person unit. Toreduce the risk of injury from thrownobjects, do not allow other personswithin a radius of 15 meters of your ownposition – even when starting.This reduces the risk of unit vibrationscausing the fuel cap to loosen or comeoff and spill quantities of fuel.To reduce the risk of serious or fatalburn injuries, check for fuel leakage. Iffuel leakage is found, do not start or runthe engine until leak is fixed.To reduce the risk of accidents, do notoperate your power tool if it is damagedor not properly assembled.–Fuel your power tool only in wellventilated areas. If you spill fuel, wipethe machine immediately – if fuel gets onyour clothing, change immediately.After fueling, tightendown the fuel tank cap assecurely as possible.Check the fuel system for leaks,paying special attention to visibleparts such as the tank cap, hoseconnections and the manual fuelpump (on machines so equipped). Ifthere are any leaks or damage, donot start the engine – risk of fire.Have your machine repaired by aservicing dealer before using itagain.Starting the EnginePlace the unit on firm ground in an openarea. Make sure you have good balanceand secure footing. Hold the unitsecurely. EnglishTo reduce the risk ofinjury, avoid contact withthe cutting attachment.Note that the cuttingattachment continues torun for a short periodafter you let go of thethrottle trigger – flywheeleffect.Check idle speed setting: The cuttingattachment must not rotate when theengine is idling with the throttle triggerreleased.To reduce the risk of fire, keep hotexhaust gases and hot muffler awayfrom easily combustible materials (e.g.wood chips, bark, dry grass, fuel).546BA002 KNDo not drop start the power tool – startthe engine as described in theinstruction manual.Left hand on loop handle, right hand oncontrol handle, even if you are lefthanded.Take special care in slippery conditions(ice, wet ground, snow), on slopes oruneven ground.Watch out for obstacles: Roots, treestumps or holes which could cause youto trip or stumble.During OperationMake sure you always have goodbalance and secure footing.In the event of impending danger or inan emergency, switch off the engineimmediately – move the stop switch inthe direction of 0.Always stand on the ground whileworking, never on a ladder, workplatform or any other insecure support.15m (50ft)Be particularly alert and cautious whenwearing hearing protection becauseyour ability to hear warnings (shouts,alarms, etc.) is restricted.To reduce the risk of accidents, take abreak in good time to avoid tiredness orexhaustion.Holding and Controlling the UnitAlways hold the power tool firmly withboth hands on the handles. Make sureyou always have good balance andsecure footing.Check and correct the idle speed settingregularly. If the cutting attachmentcontinues to rotate when the engine isidling, have the machine checked byyour servicing dealer. STIHLrecommends a STIHL servicing dealer.The cutting attachment may catch andfling objects a great distance and causeinjury - therefore, do not allow any otherpersons within a radius of 15 meters ofyour own position. To reduce the risk ofdamage to property, also maintain thisdistance from other objects (vehicles,windows). Even maintaining a distanceof 15 meters or more cannot exclude thepotential danger.Work calmly and carefully – in daylightconditions and only when visibility isgood. Stay alert so as not to endangerothers.The correct engine idle speed isimportant to ensure that the cuttingattachment stops rotating when you letgo of the throttle trigger.FS 40, FS 40 C, FS 50, FS 50 C5
EnglishYour power tool producestoxic exhaust fumes assoon as the engine isrunning. These fumesmay be colorless andodorless and containunburned hydrocarbonsand benzol. Never runthe engine indoors or inpoorly ventilated locations, even if your modelis equipped with a catalytic converter.To reduce the risk of serious or fatalinjury from breathing toxic fumes,ensure proper ventilation when workingin trenches, hollows or other confinedlocations.To reduce the risk of accidents, stopwork immediately in the event ofnausea, headache, visual disturbances(e.g. reduced field of vision), problemswith hearing, dizziness, deterioration inability to concentrate. Apart from otherpossibilities, these symptoms may becaused by an excessively highconcentration of exhaust gases in thework area.Operate your power tool so that itproduces a minimum of noise andemissions – do not run the engineunnecessarily, accelerate the engineonly when working.To reduce the risk of fire, do not smokewhile operating or standing near yourpower tool. Note that combustible fuelvapor may escape from the fuel system.The dusts, vapor and smoke producedduring operation may be dangerous tohealth. If the work area is very dusty orsmoky, wear a respirator.6If your power tool is subjected tounusually high loads for which it was notdesigned (e.g. heavy impact or a fall),always check that it is in good conditionbefore continuing work – see also"Before Starting". Check the fuel systemin particular for leaks and make sure thesafety devices are working properly. Donot continue operating your power tool ifit is damaged. In case of doubt, have theunit checked by your servicing dealer.Do not operate your power tool with thechoke lever in the warm start position – the engine speed cannot be controlledin this position.Always shut off the engine beforeleaving the unit unattended.Check the cutting attachment at regularshort intervals during operation orimmediately if there is a noticeablechange in cutting behavior:–Turn off the engine. Hold the unitfirmly and wait for the cuttingattachment to come to a standstill.–Check condition and tightness, lookfor cracks.–Replace damaged cuttingattachments immediately, even ifthey have only superficial cracks.To reduce the riskof injury fromthrown objects,never operate thepower tool withoutthe proper deflector for the type ofcutting attachmentbeing used.Clean grass and plant residue off thecutting attachment mounting at regularintervals – remove any build up ofmaterial from the cutting attachment anddeflector.Inspect the work area:Stones, pieces of metalor other solid objects maybe thrown more than 15meters and cause personal injury or damagethe cutting attachmentand property (e.g. parkedvehicles, windows).Do not continue using or attempt torepair damaged or cracked cuttingattachments by welding, straightening ormodifying the shape (out of balance).Special care must be taken whenworking in difficult, over-grown terrain.When cutting high scrub, under bushesand hedges: Keep cutting attachment ata minimum height of 15 cm to avoidharming small animals.To reduce the risk of injury, shut off theengine before replacing the cuttingattachment.This may cause parts of the cuttingattachment to come off and hit theoperator or bystanders at high speedand result in serious or fatal injuries.When using mowing headsUse only the deflector with properlymounted line limiting blade to ensure themowing lines are automatically trimmedto the approved length.FS 40, FS 40 C, FS 50, FS 50 C
EnglishTo reduce the risk of injury, always turnoff the engine before adjusting the nylonline of manually adjustable mowingheadsUsing the unit with over-long nyloncutting lines reduces the engine'soperating speed. The clutch then slipscontinuously and this causesoverheating and damage to importantcomponents (e.g. clutch, polymerhousing components) – and this canincrease the risk of injury from thecutting attachment rotating while theengine is idling.VibrationsProlonged use of the power tool mayresult in vibration-induced circulationproblems in the hands (whitefingerdisease).No general recommendation can begiven for the length of usage because itdepends on several factors.The period of usage is prolonged by:–Hand protection (wearing warmgloves)–Work breaksThe period of usage is shortened by:–Any personal tendency to sufferfrom poor circulation (symptoms:frequently cold fingers, tinglingsensations).–Low outside temperatures.–The force with which the handlesare held (a tight grip restrictscirculation).FS 40, FS 40 C, FS 50, FS 50 CContinual and regular users shouldmonitor closely the condition of theirhands and fingers. If any of the abovesymptoms appear (e.g. tinglingsensation in fingers), seek medicaladvice.Do not turn the engine over on thestarter with the spark plug boot or sparkplug removed since there is otherwise arisk of fire from uncontained sparking.Maintenance and RepairsCheck the fuel filler cap for leaks atregular intervals.Service the machine regularly. Do notattempt any maintenance or repair worknot described in the instruction manual.Have all other work performed by aservicing dealer.Use only a spark plug of the typeapproved by STIHL and make sure it isin good condition – see "Specifications".STIHL recommends that you haveservicing and repair work carried outexclusively by an authorized STIHLservicing dealer. STIHL dealers areregularly given the opportunity to attendtraining courses and are supplied withthe necessary technical information.Check the condition of the muffler.Only use high-quality replacement partsin order to avoid the risk of accidentsand damage to the machine. If you haveany questions in this respect, consult aservicing dealer.Maintenance, replacement, or repair ofthe emission control devices andsystems may be performed by anynonroad engine repair establishment orindividual. However, if you make awarranty claim for a component whichhas not been serviced or maintainedproperly, STIHL may deny coverage.STIHL recommends the use of genuineSTIHL replacement parts. These partsare specifically designed to match yourmachine model and meet yourperformance requirements.To reduce the risk of injury fromunintentional engine startup, alwaysshut off the engine and disconnect thespark plug boot before performing anyrepairs, maintenance or cleaning work. –Exception: Carburetor and idle speedadjustments.To reduce the risk of fire, do not serviceor store your machine near open flames.Inspect the ignition lead (insulation ingood condition, secure connection).To reduce the risk of fire and damage tohearing, do not operate your machine ifthe muffler is damaged or missing.Do not touch a hot muffler since burninjury will result.For any maintenance please refer to themaintenance chart and to the warrantystatement near the end of the instructionmanual.Symbols on DeflectorsAn arrow on the deflector shows thecorrect direction of rotation of the cuttingattachments.7

EnglishFuelThis engine is certified to operate onunleaded gasoline and with the mix ratio50:1.Your engine requires a mixture of highquality premium gasoline and highquality two-stroke air-cooled engine oil.Use premium branded unleadedgasoline with a minimum octane ratingof 89 (R M)/2.Note: Models equipped with a catalyticconverter require unleaded gasoline. Afew tankfuls of leaded gasoline canreduce the efficiency of the catalyticconverter by more than 50%.Fuel with a lower octane rating mayresult in preignition (causing "pinging")which is accompanied by an increase inengine temperature. This, in turn,increases the risk of the piston seizureand damage to the engine.The chemical composition of the fuel isalso important. Some fuel additives notonly detrimentally affect elastomers(carburetor diaphragms, oil seals, fuellines etc.), but magnesium castings aswell. This could cause running problemsor even damage the engine. For thisreason it is essential that you use onlyhigh-quality fuels!Fuels with different percentages ofethanol are being offered. Ethanol canaffect the running behaviour of theengine and increase the risk of leanseizure.14Gasoline with an ethanol content ofmore than 10% can cause runningproblems and major damage in engineswith a manually adjustable carburetorand should not be used in such engines.Engines equipped with M-Tronic can berun on gasoline with an ethanol contentof up to 25% (E25).Use only STIHL two-stroke engine oil orequivalent high-quality two-stroke aircooled engine oils for mixing.The fuel tank and the canister in whichfuel mix is stored should be cleanedfrom time to time.Fuel mix ratioOnly mix sufficient fuel for a few dayswork, not to exceed 30 days of storage.Store in approved safety fuel-canistersonly. When mixing, pour oil into thecanister first, and then add gasoline.We recommend STIHL 50:1 two-strokeengine oil since it is specially formulatedfor use in STIHL engines.ExamplesGasolineTo ensure the maximum performance ofyour STIHL engine, use a high quality 2cycle engine oil.
