The 5 Major Symptoms of NarcolepsyExcessive daytime sleepiness makes you feelan irresistible urge to sleep during the day,making it hard to stay awake and alert.Cataplexy is sudden muscle weaknesstriggered by strong emotions likeembarrassment, laughter, surprise, or anger.An estimated 50% of peoplewith narcolepsy have not beendiagnosed.Disrupted nighttime sleep is when youoften fall asleep quickly but wake upfrequently during the night.Sleep paralysis is a brief inability to move orspeak while falling asleep or waking up.Hypnagogic/hypnopompic hallucinations arevivid dreamlike experiences that seem real, areoften frightening, and occur while falling asleep(hypnagogic) or waking up (hypnopompic).Overview of NarcolepsyNarcolepsy is a chronic, life-disrupting neurologic disorder(involving nerve cells and chemicals in the brain) in which thebrain is not able to control sleep-wake cycles normally. Narcolepsy symptoms often start between ages 10 and 25 Getting the right diagnosis can take more than 10 years– Many disorders have some of the same symptoms–P eople can have an average of 6 doctor visitsbefore diagnosisThese symptoms are described in more detail in thisbrochure. You don’t need to have all of these symptoms tobe diagnosed with narcolepsy. Likewise, having any of thesesymptoms doesn’t necessarily mean that you have narcolepsy.It is important to tell your sleep specialist about all yoursymptoms and all the medications you are taking. It may behelpful that he or she speaks with someone who knows youwell. This person may notice subtle symptoms that you mightnot see yourself.A narcolepsy diagnosis should be made by a sleep specialist,who will review your symptoms and conduct appropriate sleeplaboratory testing.23
