WHAT IS A BANJO?Banjo is a stringed musical instrumentwith a long neck and a round bodythat is played by plucking. It is usedespecially in American folk music.

WHERE DID BANJOS COME FROM?The banjo is originally fromAfrica, and was brought toAmerica with enslavedAfricans in the 1700s.Those banjos were made ofa dried gourd with ananimal skin head, and had 3or 4 strings.

WHERE DID BANJOS COME FROM?The African banjo evolved from twoinstruments: the Akonting and N'goni.Akonting is used by the Jola people, inGambia, and Guinea-Bissau in WestAfrica.It has a skin-headed gourdbody, two long strings, andone short string.

WHERE DID BANJOS COME FROM?The N'goni is a traditionalguitar of Mali. Its body is madeof wood with dried animal skinhead stretched over it.

WHERE DID BANJOS COME FROM?In the 1800s, whiteAmericans starting usingthe instrument.The popular "Boucherbanjo" was developedand sold by a drummaker. This hints to theshape of the banjo today.

BANJO TODAY!A modern banjo is made of woodand metal, which makes itheavy!It also has four or five stringsmade of metal, and the bodythat has a plastic head instead ofanimal skin.It's built like a drum with stringsacross it!

PARTS OF THE BANJOThe body is shaped likea drum. The front iscovered with a plastichead. The back isusually made of wood.Some banjos don’thave a back at all!

PARTS OF THE BANJO4 strings are held in placeswith tuning pegs in theheadpiece at the top. The 5thstring is attached to the neck.The strings are held at thetailpiece at the bottom.Above the tailpiece is thebridge, a small piece of woodand metal that raises thestrings off the neck.TailpieceBridge

HOW TO PLAY BANJOBanjo players often play using 3 picks:one on the thumb and two fingers.Having 3 picks allows players to playvery fast!When learning to play banjo, you usethe 3 picks to learn different patterns.These patterns are called rolls. Eachroll pattern has its own specific soundto it.

BANJO INNOVATOR - EARL SCRUGGSThe inventor of this styleof banjo playing is EarlScruggs.He performed his newbanjo style when he was ateenager in the 1940s,and played professionallyfor almost 70 years!ScruggsScruggs (right) with his longtimemusical partner Lester Flattin 2005

BLUEGRASSEarl Scruggs played Bluegrass.This type of music is oftenconnected with the banjo.Bluegrass started in theAppalachian region and is a kindof country music that is playedon acoustic stringedinstruments: upright bass,mandolin, guitar, fiddle and,of course, banjo.Bill Monroe (on mandolin) was the Fatherof Bluegrass. Hear him and his BluegrassBoys perform the song Uncle Pen.

NOTABLE BANJOISTSOur Native Daughters is a quartetof Black women musicians who singand play banjo (and many otherinstruments).Their aim is to reclaim banjo musicthat was taken from enslavedpeople by white Americans. Theycelebrate the often unheard anduntold history of their ancestors.
