Logix 500si Seires FCD LGENTB0056-02 09/13510si and 520si Digital PositionersFeatures and AdvantagesLogix510siLogix520siCommissioning is performed by simply setting a few switches and pressing the QUICK-CALbutton. The Direct User Interface provides local access to positioner control without requiringmulti-level menus, a handheld communicator or laptop computer. Local Status LEDsLEDs, visible from a distance, indicate the positioner’s current status without removing thecover. Internal Diagnostic CodesLEDs provide instant information relating to internal diagnostic codes. These codes indicateto the user positioner status and alarms without the need for a handheld communicator orlaptop computer. Fast and Simple ConfigurationWith its unique Direct User Interface, the Logix 500si positioner provides fast and easyconfiguration. Local configuration switches allow the user to set all basic parameters forpositioner operation, such as output characteristic (e.g. equal percent, linear or custom), airaction, signal direction, gain, tuning, etc. Calibration typically takes less than one minute. Jog CalibrateThe jog calibrate function allows the user to easily and quickly calibrate the positioner on allactuators without physical stroke stops. Auto TuneAdapting the response of the Logix 500 series positioner to a particular valve configurationis as simple as pressing a button. The Logix 500 positioner has a built-in auto-tuning function that, when enabled, quickly adjusts the response to match the valve and actuator. If theautomatic tuning does not match the needs of the process, it can be modified in seconds byselecting a less aggressive auto-tune (gain) setting from the local user interface. Once set,the tuning is fixed until the next time an auto-tune is performed. HART CommunicationUsing industry standard HART protocol, the Logix 500si positioner can use existing handheld communicators and supply extensive information to maintenance database softwarepackages.Low Air ConsumptionState-of-the-art piezo technology combined with inner-loop feedback produces high-performance control with minimal air consumption.21-Point CharacterizationWith SoftTools software or a handheld communicator, a custom 21-point characterizationcurve can be generated that can be used to change the response of the positioner to meetthe process requirements. DiagnosticsSoftTools allows the user to gather detailed diagnostic information regarding valve performance and positioner condition, in addition to the LED status codes. Two-Stage Control DesignPositioner uses two-stage control to provide faster response and tightercontrol.Configuration LockoutConfiguration lockout option in SoftTools permits users to perform automatic calibrationprocedures without modifying existing configuration and tuning settings.NAMUR and VDI/VDENAMUR and VDI/VDE mounting interfaces provide direct standardized mounting to variouslinear or rotary actuators. Brackets are available for non-NAMUR actuators. The positioner consistsof three main modules: 1) the microprocessor-based electroniccontrol module with optional analog feedback and direct local userinterface switches; 2) the piezo-valve-based electro-pneumaticconverter module; and 3) the infinite resolution valve positionsensor.Figure 3 shows the principle of operation of the Logix 510si. Theanalog 4–20 mA command signal is passed to the microprocessor, where it is compared to the measured valve stem position. Thecontrol algorithm in the processor performs dual gain calculationsand produces an output command to the analog piezo valve, whichdrives the pneumatic amplifier. The pilot valve position in the pneumatic amplifier is measured and relayed to the inner loop control3) Valve Position Sensorcircuit. This two-stage control provides for a more responsiveand tighter control than is possible with a single-stage controlalgorithm. The pneumatic amplifier controls the airflow to the actuator. Thechange of pressure and volume of the air in the actuator causesthe valve to stroke. As the valve approaches the desired position, the difference between the commanded position and the measuredposition becomes smaller and the output to the piezo is decreased. This, in turn, causes the pilot valve to close and the resultingairflow to decrease, which slows the actuator movement as itapproaches the new command position. When the actuator hasreached the desired position, the pneumatic amplifier output is heldat zero, which holds the valve in a constant position.5flowserve.com

Logix 500si Series FCD LGENTB0056-02 09/13520si Series Digital PositionersSoftTools InterfaceIntroduction to SoftTools SoftwareFlowserve’s SoftTools Suite software helps manage field devicesby combining features of field network hardware and a variety ofcommunication protocols with the performance of Flowserve Logix520si digital positioners. SoftTools Suite is a complete softwarepackage, featuring device status, configuration and calibrationscreens. Additionally, the user can access customized reports forall configuration, calibration and event data. SoftTools softwareopens the ‘window’ to the device and allows immediate views withlive feedback on all active device sensors including valve stem position, control signal, and other important process metrics. Multipleinstances of the software can be run simultaneously, addressingunique positioners. Up to 33 field devices can be viewed simultaneously, allowing the control professional to study cause and effectscenarios.Note: SoftTools is available for download from www.flowserve.com.ConfiguratorLogix 520si configurations can be savedsecurely in a database file. By uploading apositioner configuration, the informationis automatically saved and written to diskon the workstation. SoftTools softwareallows the user to selectively query thedatabase to isolate or identify specificconfigurations. Therefore, the user can sortby any number of parameters including tagnumber, valve size or type, trim type, flowdirection, and liquid or gas application.SoftTools software also allows the user toeasily upload a configuration from the positioner. This means that a new replacementpositioner can be identically configuredwith the simple click of a mouse once thecorrect configuration has been identified. The configurator enables users to editindividual configurations, export to wordprocessors and spreadsheets and importfrom other files. It also allows the user toformat and print a positioner configurationreport (Figure 6).10Figure 6: ConfiguratorSoftTools software enables communication between the softwaresuite of tools and field device networks using the HART protocoland provides access to the diagnostic information from fielddevices. Using the MTL or ELCON brand HART multiplexer, userscan access more than 63,000 Logix HART positioners from a singleworkstation. Additionally, the software includes an active databaseto capture configuration, calibration history and event logging foreach digital positioner addressed through the software.Users can now obtain a new level of detailed diagnostic informationwith SoftTools software. Diagnostic tests and functions (formallyavailable only in strap-on diagnostic testers) are now part of thefunctionality. The software retains the traditional signature andlogging features made popular in previous Flowserve software andadds scheduled polling for device alarms, critical diagnostic testsfor friction, and performance analysis of positioners.

Logix 500si Seires FCD LGENTB0056-02 09/13520si Series Digital PositionersSoftTools Interface21-point Characterization CurveFigure 7: 21-point Characterization CurveWith SoftTools software, the user canadjust a 21-point characterization curve(Figure 7) to change the response of thepositioner in order to meet the processrequirements. The output of each controlpoint is independent, allowing the user tocreate a custom curve with very high resolution. This customized curve can be savedin the memory of the Flowserve Logix520si, and either activated or overriddenwith a simple on-board selector switch.TuningUnlike other positioners that offer only onegain setting, the Logix 520si positionerprovides dual-gain tuning. This allows theuser to tune the positioner to make largestep changes with minimal overshoot, while achieving the resolution to respond tovery small step changes. The Logix 520sipositioner not only provides several presetgain settings, it also allows the user todevelop custom settings for a wide rangeof actuator sizes and types. Tuning sets canbe configured, or selected with the HART275/375 hand-held, SoftTools, or directlyfrom the user interface on the positioner.Figure 8: Manual Tuning with User InterfaceBy setting the Auto Tune on/off DIP switch, the tuning mode can be changed frommanual to auto. The Auto Tune procedurecycles the actuator (Figure 8) to produce ameasured response and selects those gainvalues that provide appropriate actuatorperformance. The Auto Tune functionincludes a gain modifier selector thatcan be used to increase or decrease thecalculated gain in order to achieve optimalperformance.11flowserve.com

Logix 500si Series FCD LGENTB0056-02 09/13Figure 9: Ramp Open Test520si Series Digital PositionersSoftTools, Signatures and Performance TestingSignaturesThe Flowserve Logix 520si positioner is designed to assure thatdata is easily gathered, stored and compared to historical valvedata so the user can determine the performance of critical valves.Figure 10: Signature ComparisonWith SoftTools software a user-defined signature ramp (Figure 9)or step response test can be generated with a Logix 520si positioner. Signatures can be saved and cataloged (and later retrieved)for comparison (Figure 10) with a more recent signature.SoftTools software allows a user to easily overlay valve signaturesand compare current performance with past performance over aparticular time period. This allows the user to determine if degradation has occurred over time on critical valves. It also allows theuser to compare historical data and determine if a valve needs tobe pulled for maintenance. User-defined steps (large or small) canbe tested and stored—large steps for speed and small steps forresolution and precision. Internal sensors allow the user to test theresponse and health of the valve at any time.Figure 11: Performance TestPositioner PerformanceStatic performance and accuracy measures such as hysteresis, deadband, linearity, and repeatability can be obtained with theLogix 520si positioner.
