Renold Conveyor Chain CatalogueI5Conveyor ChainRenold Ultimate SpecificationRenold Ultimate Performance The performance of Renold Conveyor Chain isensured by a programme of continuoustesting and quality control of componentdimensions, fits and material properties. Specially formulated lubricants reduce initialwear, provide corrosion protection and longstorage life. Breaking loads exceed the minimuminternational standards. Correct chain selection is essential foroptimum performance. Renold’sexperienced design team are alwaysavailable to freely advise on particularproducts and applications.Fatigue lifeis improved bymaintaining precise fits andtolerances between the pins, bushes and side plates. The Renold specification has taken many yearsin design and development to achieve theoptimum product. In order to ensure this istranslated into product performance, westrictly control: MaterialsHeat TreatmentProcessesFitsAttachment AssemblyLubricationExact control of bush projection through the chainside plate maintains precise clearances between thechain’s inner and outer links. This feature reduces therisk of wear during operation, allows space forlubricant penetration, and greatly reduces thepossibility of chain seizure industy/abrasive environments.Bush and roller life are maximisedby controlling the concentricity ofthese components and careful selectionand control of the heat treatment process.Chain and sprocket life are optimised by the rigidcontrol of pitch accuracy, resulting in excellentgearing, lower friction, reduced wear and areduction in noise levels during operation.Down time in hostile environments is minimised bystrict control of inner and outer plate clearances, ensuring effective lubricant penetration to thebearing surfaces.Renold Ultimate Reliability The key to Renold chain reliability isconsistency in design and manufacture. Maximum chain strength and resistance towear are achieved by strict control of thematerial specification and by using state ofthe art heat treatment processes. The consistent overall tolerances of Renoldchain make it ideal for conveying systemsrequiring precise alignment on multistrand chain layouts.Section 1Renold Ultimate Performance

6I Renold Conveyor Chain CatalogueConveyor Chain DetailsSection 1Conveyor Chain TypesPrecision conveyor chain, like transmissionchain, consists of a series of journal bearingsheld in precise relationship to each other byconstraining link plates. Each bearing consists of a bearing pin andbush on which the chain roller revolves. Thebearing pin and bush are case-hardened toallow articulation under high pressures, and tocontend with the load carrying pressure andgearing action imparted via the chain rollers. There is, for each strength of conveyor chain, arange of pitches; the minimum pitch beinggoverned by the need for adequate wheeltooth strength; the maximum pitch beingnormally dictated by plate and general chainrigidity. When required, the normal maximumpitch can be exceeded by the use ofstrengthening bushes between the link plates, and suitable gaps to clear the bushes must beprovided in the wheel teeth.INTERNATIONAL STANDARDSConveyor chain, like transmission chain, can bemanufactured to a number of differentinternational standards. The main standardsavailable are:BRITISH STANDARD - BSDEEP LINK CHAINThis standard covers chain manufactured tosuit the British market and markets where astrong British presence has dominatedengineering design and purchasing. Thestandard is based on the original RenoldConveyor Chain design.Deep Link chain has sideplates with a greaterdepth than the normal chain plates; thusproviding a continuous carrying edge abovethe roller periphery. When lateral flexing of thechain is required to negotiate horizontal bendradii, coned bearing pins are employed.Available in Hollow or Solid Pin versions.ISO STANDARDChain manufactured to ISO Standard is notinterchangeable with BS or DIN StandardChain. This standard has a wide acceptance inthe European market, except in Germany.Chain manufactured to this standard isbecoming more popular and is usedextensively in the Scandinavian region.SOLID BEARING PIN CHAINHOLLOW BEARING PIN CHAINCHAIN ROLLERSHollow bearing pin type chain affords readyfacility for fixing attachments to outer links bybolting through the hollow bearing pins and issuitable for use in all normal conditions. In general, the use of chain incorporatingrollers is recommended, but bush chain, i.e.chain without rollers, can be used on certainapplications. The attachments may be bolted up tight orheld in the hollow bearing pin in a “free”manner. Bolted attachments should only spanthe outer link, as a bolted attachmentspanning the inner link would impair the freearticulation of the chain.Rollers of the plain or flanged type, with achoice of size and material, are listed for mostchain series - size and material beingdependent upon the type of application.Solid bearing pin chain, while having exactlythe same gearing dimensions, i.e. pitch, insidewidth and roller diameter as the equivalenthollow bearing pin chain, is more robust and isrecommended for use where arduousconditions may be encountered.HOLLOW BEARING PIN CHAINSOLID BEARING PIN CHAINDEEP LINK CHAINCHAIN ROLLERS

Renold Conveyor Chain CatalogueI7Standard attachments are parts fitted to abase chain to adapt it for a particular purposeas a conveying medium. Attachments mayform an integral part of the link plate or maybe built into the chain as a replacement of thenormal link. Other attachments (according totype) are fixed to the chain plates by projectionor fillet welding, to either one or both sides ofthe chain.Standard attachments are described below:F AttachmentsOuter or Inner LinksSection 1Standard AttachmentsSpigot PinsF1 - WeldedSpigot Pin through HollowBearing PinF2 - Welded The letter stands for the attachment type. The figure stands for the number of holeswithin each attachment type.Special attachments can be manufactured, butwherever possible, standard attachments usedon our preferred range of chains shown earlierwill give price and delivery advantages. ConsultRenold Chain for details.K AttachmentsOuter or Inner LinksSpigot Pin through Link PlatesF Attachments provide a flat surface at rightangles to the chain plate. They are used forsecuring pushers, scraper bars, etc.Spigot pins may be assembled either throughhollow bearing pins or link plates and aresecured by a nut and spring washer.L AttachmentsHoled Link PlatesK1 - IntegralLO - IntegralSingle Holed Link PlateL2 - IntegralDouble Holed Link PlateK3 - IntegralK1 - WeldedK2 - WeldedL Attachments are integral with the chainouter plates. Normally they have one or twoholes (L2 preferred), but for use on scraperapplications they can be supplied withoutholes and with various box widths (LO Type).Outboard RollersFor use on Hollow Bearing Pin ChainSingle holing is primarily for use with spigotpins and is required on both sides of the chain.Double holing is provided for the assembly ofspecial attachments on one or both sides ofthe chain. The holes in the inner plates arecountersunk on the inside face to prevent thebolt heads fouling the sprocket teeth.Standard SprocketsA modified rim section is required when G orinverted F2 attachments are fitted to inner links.Extended Bearing PinsK Attachments provide a platform parallel tothe chain line and bearing pin axis. They areused for securing slats, scrapers, buckets etc. tothe chain.Outboard rollers have two principal advantages;as direct load carriers they enable the chainrollers to be used solely for gearing purposesand in the event of outboard roller wear, theycan be replaced easily without recourse to chainreplacement. They are particularly useful whenattachments prevent the gearing rollers runningon support tracks on the return run or wherethe roller loading is high.Extended bearing pins, one side of the chain, can be supplied hard, soft, solid or drilled andare similar to the spigot pin arrangement.FOR ATTACHMENT SIZES AND ATTACHMENTSOTHER THAN THOSE SHOWN, CONSULTRENOLD CHAIN.
