Concrete must be fully cured (28 days), structurallysound, clean, and dry (ASTM D 4263). All concretesurfaces (new and old) must be shotblasted to removeprevious coatings, laitance, and all miscellaneoussurface contamination and to provide profile for properadhesion. Abrasive shotblasting must occur afterconcrete repair has taken place. Acid-etching is notpermitted. Proper profile should be a minimum of ICRICSP-3 (approximately 80 – 100 grit sandpaper).2. Repair voids and delaminated areas with BASFConstruction Chemicals branded cementitious andepoxy patching materials. For application when fastturn around repairs are required, Conipur 265 can beused to repair patches up to 1" (25 mm) in depth. Please refer to Technical Service for proper applicationtechniques.SURFACE PRE-STRIPING AND DETAILING1. For nonmoving joints and cracks less than 1/16"(1.6 mm) wide, apply primer when required, followedby 25 wet mils (0.6 mm) prestriping of Base Coat. The Base Coat must be applied to fill and overlap thejoint or crack 3" (76 mm) on each side. Feather theedges.1Coverage is ft2/gal (m2/L)2(16 – 30 mesh rounded silica sand or proportional equivalent)2. Dynamic cracks and joints 1/16" (1.6 mm) andgreater wide must be routed to a minimum of 1/4 by1/4" (6 by 6 mm) and cleaned. Install bondbreakertape to prevent adhesion of sealants to the bottom ofjoint. Prime joint faces only with Sonneborn Primer733 (see Form No. 1017962). Fill joints deeper than1/4" (6 mm) with appropriate backer-rod andSL 1 /SL 2 (slope grade or self-leveling) orNP 1 /NP 1 sealants (see Form Nos. 1017903 and1017911). For cracks, sealant should be flush withthe adjacent concrete surface. For expansion joints, sealant should be slightly concave.3. Sealed joints 1" (25 mm) or less can be coatedover with Sonoguard . Expansion joints exceeding 1"(25 mm) wide should not be coated over withSonoguard so that they can perform independentlyof the deck coating system.4. Cut a 1/4 by 1/4" (6 by 6 mm) keyway into theconcrete where the coating system will beterminated if no wall, joint, or other appropriatebreak exists. Fill according to instructions on cracksand joints over 1/16" (1.6 mm) wide.5. Form a sealant cant into the corner at the junctionof all horizontal and vertical surfaces (wall sections, curbs, columns). Prime with Primer 733 and apply a1/2 – 1" (13 – 25 mm) wide bead of NP 1 orNP 2 sealants. Tool to form a 45 cant.6. In locations of potential high movement, such aswall and slab intersections, apply 25 wet mils(0.6 mm) of Sonoguard Base Coat and embedSonoshield Reinforcing Fabric.METAL SURFACES1. Remove dust, debris, and any other contaminantsfrom vent, drain-pipe, and post penetrations; reglets;and other metal surfaces.2. Clean these surfaces to bright metal and primeimmediately with Primer 733.3. Provide appropriate cant with NP 1 , NP 2 , orUltra sealant to eliminate 90 angles.PLYWOOD1. All plywood must be smooth-faced, APAstamped, and exterior grade. Construction mustconform to code, but plywood must not be less than15/32" (12 mm) thick. Plywood spacing and deckconstruction must follow APA guidelines.2. Surfaces must be free of contaminants. Primingis not necessary on clean, dry plywood.3. All seams must be caulked with NP 1 or NP 2 sealants (see Form Nos. 1017906 and 1017911).Prestripe 4 – 6" (102 – 152 mm) wide with 25 wetmils (0.6 mm) of Base Coat. Reinforce all seamsbetween plywood sheets and between flashing andthe plywood deck by embedding Sonoshield Reinforcing Fabric into the prestriping.20.3

SONNEBORN PRODUCT DATASONOGUARD APPLICATION OF PRIMERApplication Methods of Systems1. Prime concrete substrate (if required).PrimingSonoguard can be applied in several differentsystems depending on the degree of traffic thesystem is exposed to. In areas of extreme traffic(turning lanes, pay booths, ramps, entrances andexits), apply the Extra Heavy-Duty Traffic System(refusal method). The following summary brieflydescribes each method. All coverage rates areapproximate.2. Apply 25 wet mils (0.6 mm) Sonoguard BaseCoat using a proper notched squeegee at 60ft2/gallon (1.5 m2/L). Immediately backroll to levelBase Coat. Allow to cure overnight.NOTE: When primer is required on a job, follow thesesteps. When applying Sonoguard without using aprimer, proceed to Application.1. After thoroughly vacuuming the surface, applyPrimer 772 VOC or Primer 770 to all the properlyprepared deck surfaces at the rate of 200 – 250ft2/ gallon (4.9 – 6.1 m2/L). Using a roller pan and ashort- to medium-nap roller cover, force the primerinto pores and voids to eliminate pinholes. Do notapply over prestriping. Use only solvent-resistanttools and equipment.2. Allow primer to dry tack free. Base Coat must beapplied the same working day.Application of Base Coat1. All preparatory work must be completed beforeapplication begins. Be certain the substrate is clean, dry, stable, and properly profiled. Sealants andprestriping should be properly cured. Apply the base, mid, and finish coats with a properly sized squeegeeto arrive at the required mil thicknesses.2. The best method to ensure the proper wet filmthickness is the use of a grid system. Divide thesurface to be coated into grids and calculate thesquare footage of each. Refer to the coverage chart todetermine the quantity of Sonoguard needed for eachgrid to arrive at the required mil thicknesses. Forexample, one pail of Sonoguard Base Coat will coveran area approximately 300 ft2 (28 m2), or a grid 30 by10 ft (9 by 3 m) at 25 wet mils (0.6 mm). The milthickness of all coats can also be verified by the useof a wet-mil thickness gauge.3. Apply Base Coat 25 wet mils thick (0.6 mm)using a proper notched squeegee to entire decksurface, overcoating the properly prepared cracks, joints, and flashings. For sloped areas, use slopegrade Base Coat. Do not coat expansion joints over1" (25 mm) wide.4. Allow curing time of overnight (16 hourminimum). Slightly extend the curing time in cool ordry weather conditions. The surface of the base coatshould have a slight tack. If the coating has beenexposed for a prolonged period, consult TechnicalService for recommendations.IMPORTANT NOTE: All coverage rates are approximate andmay vary due to the application technique used. Actualcoverage rate will depend on finish and porosity of thesubstrate.LIGHT- TO MEDIUM- DUTY TRAFFIC & PEDESTRIAN SYSTEMLIGHT TO MEDIUM DUTY TRAFFICAND PEDESTRIAN SYSTEM4. SONNEBORN PRODUCT DATASONOGUARD MockupFor Best PerformanceTroubleshootingProvide mockup of at least 100 ft2 (9.3 m2) toinclude surface profile, sealant joint, crack, flashing, and juncture details and allow for evaluation of slipresistance and appearance of Sonoguard Systems. Concrete should have a minimum compressivestrength of 3,000 psi (20.7 MPa) and be curedfor a minimum of 28 days.Problem—likely causes:1. Install mockup with specified coating types andwith other components noted.2. Locate where directed by architect.3. Mockup may remain as part of work if acceptableto architect. For recoat applications, see Sonoguard RecoatSystem product data sheet.Curing Time For slab on grade applications please contactBASF representative. Be sure to allow for movement in the deck by theproper design and use of expansion and controljoints. When applying sealants, use backing materialsaccording to industry standards. Do not apply when substrates are over 110 F(32 C) or under 40 F (4 C).Allow curing time of 72 hours before vehicular useand 48 hours before pedestrian use. Extend thecuring time in cool-weather conditions. To reduce thetimeframe in which Sonoguard might be vulnerableto inclement weather or to reduce the time betweencoats, use Sonoguard Top Coat Accelerator. When used interior, provide adequate ventilationwith a minimum of 6 air changes per hour.Maintenance Be certain that all aggregate not properlyencapsulated is thoroughly removed.1. Portions of the membrane that exhibit wear areconsidered a maintenance item, and are notconsidered a warrantable item.2. Surfaces may be cleaned with commercialdetergents. Sonneborn recommends that amaintenance agreement be established between theowner and applicator.3. Periodic inspection and repair of damagedsurfaces will greatly prolong the performance and lifeof the system. When adequate ventilation for use of Sonoguard cannot be maintained, refer to product data sheetfor Conipur II Deck Coating System (Form No.1017917). On steep ramps in excess of 15%, contact yourlocal BASF representative. Sonoguard Aggregate 16/30, rounded selectsilica sand is recommended. When applying to metal pan decks or deckscontaining between-slab membranes, contactTechnical Service. Select the proper amount of aggregate topromote slip resistance.4. Remove all sharp debris, such as sand, gravel, and metal on a regular basis to avoid damage to thecoating. Prestripe to level out recessed sealant joints (lessthan 1" [25 mm]) for optimal aestheticappearance.5. When removing snow, avoid the use of metalblades or buckets that may damage the coating. Avoid application of Sonoguard when inclementweather is present or imminent.Clean UpClean all tools and equipment with Reducer 990 orxylene. Do not apply Sonoguard to damp, wet, orcontaminated surfaces. Sonoguard is not suitable for use where chainedor metal-studded tires will be used. Proper application is the responsibility of theuser. Field visits by BASF personnel are for thepurpose of making technical recommendationsonly and not for supervising or providing qualitycontrol on the jobsite.Irregular appearance—substrate too rough, uneven coating application, uneven aggregatedistribution. SOLUTION: Recoating may improveappearance. The number of additional coat(s) isdependent on the degree of irregularity. A samplerecoat should be done.Premature wear over high spots—failure to grinddown abnormally rough concrete or junctions ofslabs that do not line up evenly. SOLUTION: Grindhigh areas. Recoat affected area with entireSonoguard system.Uneven aggregate distribution—castingaggregate into an uneven coating, not castingaggregate consistently. SOLUTION: Aggregate shouldbe evenly distributed before encapsulation. If thesurface cures unevenly, a recoat may improveappearance. Use a sample area to gauge results ofrecoat.Inadequate slip resistance—inconsistent coatingapplication, failure to properly embed aggregate, overly heavy finish coat. SOLUTION NO. 1: Wheninstalling aggregate to refusal method, incorporatean additional 10 lb/100 ft2 (0.5 kg/m2) aggregate intothe final lock coat. SOLUTION NO. 2: Start with asample area. Lightly abrade surface to exposeaggregate. Refer to Sonoguard Recoat product datasheet.Blisters—coating application too heavy or a wetsubstrate. SOLUTION: Cut blisters and spot repair asneeded.Poor adhesion to concrete—concrete surface toosmooth (not properly profiled) or friable; concretecontaminated by dirt, oil, or moisture, etc. SOLUTION:Fix underlying problem, then reapply Sonoguard system.Intercoat adhesion is poor—preceding coatcontaminated by dirt or moisture; topcoat appliedpast critical recoat time. SOLUTION: Fix underlyingproblem, then reapply Sonoguard system. Foradditional information, contact Sonneborn TechnicalService.Sagging in vertical applications—SOLUTION:Apply multiple thin coats of both base and top coatsto achieve desired film thickness. If puddling doesoccur, backroll as soon as possible.20.5
