Office of the PresidentAbout Guy BaileyGuy Bailey, Ph.D., was named Founding President of The University of Texas RioGrande Valley in May 2014.Prior to being named President of UTRGV, he served as President of the University ofAlabama and of Texas Tech University; Chancellor of the University of Missouri-KansasCity; and Provost and Executive Vice President of The University of Texas San Antonio;Dean of Liberal Arts at the University of Nevada Las Vegas; Chair of the EnglishDepartment at Oklahoma State University and the University of Memphis; and as afaculty member at Texas A&M and Emory Universities.During his time at Texas Tech, the university met the criteria established by the TexasState Legislature for participation in the National Research University Fund; enrollmentgrew by 3,905 students (14%); research expenditures grew by 89.9 million (170%);and graduation rates increased by five percentage points.During his tenure at UTSA, the university was named an emerging research universityby the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board; 16 new doctoral programs wereadded; external funding for research more than doubled; enrollment grew by morethan 40%; and graduate enrollment grew by almost 50%.While Bailey was at UMKC, the university completed a 200 million capital campaignand built or gained approval for 175 million in new construction. From 2010 to 2012,Bailey served on the Board of Directors of the NCAA and on the Executive Committeeof the Board of Directors of the Big 12 athletic conference. He has also served on theBoard of Trustees of Midwest Research Institute since 2007.Bailey continues to conduct research on language change and variation. His researchwith his late wife, Jan, has been featured in a front-page article in the New York Times,on National Public Radio, on CNN Headline News, on BBC Radio, in Texas Monthly,and in the San Antonio Express News. E.P.I.C. MentoringThe Engaging Peers in College Program is the first step to having an EPICcollege experience! E.P.I.C. is a year-round mentoring program that begins inthe Fall and runs through the Spring semester. It is open to all students attending theUniversity of Texas Rio Grande Valley for their first year (including Transfer Students).E.P.I.C. focuses on three core pillars of the college experience: academic success,personal growth, and involvement.Once in the E.P.I.C. program, the student will be assigned a mentor who is a successfulreturning student. Students get to meet with their mentor, or more if needed oncea month. During the meeting, the mentor will go over a curriculum, provide advice,and answer any questions to guide the student to a successful year. There will alsobe exclusive EPIC socials and events for students in the program to enjoy and meetothers in the program.If you are interested in being paired with a mentor be sure to follow thelink provided to access our E.P.I.C. UTRGV LingoAcademic Advisor – Advisors helpstudents select the correct courses,review course requirements, and provideguidance for undecided students.Add/Drop Courses – Students aregenerally permitted to drop courses fromtheir class schedule and/or add othercourses. Dropping/adding courses mustbe done in accordance to importantdeadlines and financial/academicrequirements.Assist – Provides a variety of onlineservices to UTRGV students regarding,registration, financial aid, payment, andgrades. For your security, ASSIST requiresthat you enter your username andpassword to access financial aid, paymentrecords, and transcript records.Bachelor’s Degree – Also known as abaccalaureate degree, the bachelor’s is anacademic degree consisting of a minimumof 120 credit hours. The degree includesthe required General Education Core andcourses in the field of study.Census Date – The official census dateis the 12th class day for regular fall andspring semesters or the fourth-class dayfor summer sessions. Dates for traditionalprograms are found in the AcademicCalendar. Census dates for non-traditionalstudents (online-accelerated programs)will be published by the registrar’s office.Entering freshman – A student admittedas an entering freshman has not attendedany accredited college or university.Excess Credit Hours – Should youexceed the designated attempted hourslimit, you will be charged an additional 50 per excess credit hour.Final/Mid-term Exams – These examsare given at the middle and end of asemester. GPA’s can be calculatedby multiplying the credit hours a class isworth by the number of points earned forthe letter grade. Add up the totals for eachcourse, then this number is divided by thetotal number of attempted credit hours.The result is your GPA.Major/Minor – A major is a specific field ofstudy that a student chooses and requiresa designated amount of credit hours tofulfill completion. A minor is a secondaryfield of study that requires a smallerdesignated amount of credit hours forcompletion.Prerequisite Courses – Specifiedrequirements that must be met before onecan enroll in the course.Six-Course Drop Limit – All students areallowed a maximum of 6 course dropsafter the census date. Blackboard Learning Management SystemBlackboard Learn is our institution's learning management system that allows faculty to addresources and online learning activities for students to access online.Blackboard courses can range from web augmented, which may only include class notes, tofully online, which incorporates everything from class notes, assignments, assessments, live orrecorded lectures, discussion boards, grades, and more.
