TurnerCenter staff!December 2019There’s something for everyoneat FiftyForwardAs the hustle and bustle of the holidaysbegins, it is important that we reach out tofriends who might need some positivity andfellowship in their lives. At our centers we see many groups led bywomen who are doing fun, creative projects.Social trends demonstrate women are verysocial creatures, and often create long, lastingbonds. The same can be said of men. Manycenters are recognizing the need to createthose opportunities for men to gather to formfriendships and to support one another.Dan Surface, a Friends Learning in Pairs(FLIP) volunteer, was featured in ourSeptember Forward Focus. When he retired,he wondered about his next chapter and thenorganized a group to gather men together tosupport one another in retirement andbeyond. The Retired Men’s Group: Refiringyour Life at FiftyForward Knowles was born. One of their first goals was to supportFiftyForward member Joe Murray in hislifelong goal to skydive. (Read about ithere: hat the general population in Nashvillemay not know is that there are several groupsfor men at our centers that offer men a chanceto convene and enjoy fellowship. At FiftyForward Martin Center, men meetfor breakfast every other month to developfriendships and supportone another. CenterDirector Jodi Theobaldsays she started thegroup to honor hergrandpa. She recounts,“He would go down to asmall restaurant in ourlittle town everymorning. They had a table there where all themen sat, had breakfast, and talked aboutanything and everything.” The group is a way“to keep the spirit and energy of those timesalive.” Usually 15 men attend but welcomemore to join them. The next gathering isThursday, Dec. 12, 8:30-9:30 a.m. Call thecenter, 615-376-0102 for more information. In support of other men’s groups andactivities, FiftyForward Madison Stationrecently held a pool tournament and invitedFiftyForward Donelson Station members tocompete. They had 32 participants, 16 fromeach center. It was a chance for the men’spool groups to have some friendly competition(there are a few women who play pool, too). The final match was between Jerry Farley(FiftyForward Madison Station) and RayWarrick (FiftyForward Donelson Station). Raywon! One of the members had the fun trophycreated, whichwas awarded toRay, but will beawarded to thewinner of thenext tournament.Coincidentally,Jerry and RayJerry (L) awards Ray the prizedhave known each trophy — all in good fun!other since gradeschool – so they have a long history together. If you are interested in playing pool with thesefun-loving guys, call the centers or show up!These three groups welcome other men tojoin them to create a safe, welcoming place –for lively discussion, games, fellowship andsupport. We hope that more men will joinFiftyForward and realize it’s a place foreveryone, men and women alike.
