Book ofDiatonic & Chromatic HarmonicaMost of the harmonica players I meet are men in their grayhair era and have a tendency to be a bit of a handful. I’mone of those guys. Yet, harmonica is for everybody. Here’ssome things it’ll probably do for you:Updated: September 19, 2020–Don’t print this out!I update regularly and you’ll just waste paper.Gary Jugert’s Big Book of Harmonica is not big yet, but it’sgetting bigger. If you want to chat about this book, or thearrangements, or mistakes you’ve found, or a song youwant, I’d love to hear from you. Find videos and additionalinstruction at https://mammothgardens.com Email me atgaryjugert@yahoo.com You can be a part of making thisbigger and better.o Make you musical and artistic and fun. If you also reada book once in a while, you’ll end up being delightful.o It’ll strengthen your breathing apparatus and with theEarth descending into polluted anarchy, you might be abit stronger than the guy next to you as you run from thezombies. It means the horror will last a bit longer for youand that’s really what we’re after, right?o Help your memory and your tin ear. Huh? What?o Give you something to do at stoplights. You can rawkout. Your journeys will become more pleasant. Honkingyour horn will mean something completely different toyou. And suddenly all the politicians will start voting theway you think they should, people will start listening toyour opinions, and you’ll actually get better looking.Copyright 2020 All Rights Reserved. Table of ContentsPage numbers change with each update, and it’s too muchwork to fix them every time. I’ve arranged everything moreor less alphabetically, but diatonic harmonica stuff comesbefore chromatic harmonica stuff. By the way, don’t skipthe “stuff you need to know” section. It should help.Section 3: Chromatic Sheet Music (Public Domain)The number after each song title is the first note.1.2.3.4.Section 1: Stuff You Need to Know Copyright NoticePlaying with GuitaristsA Note on LyricsGrecian ModesSound FilesAnd Of Course Some Ukulele InfoWhere to Find My VideosAll Harmonicaso Care and Maintenanceo Preparing to Playo Harmonica Embouchureo Daily Fundamental PreparationDiatonic Harmonicao Hole Layouto First Songso Bending Noteso Diatonic ChordsChromatic Harmonicao Hole LayoutPractice LogSection 4: Diatonic Christmas-y Sheet Music Coming Winter 2020Section 5: Chromatic Christmas-y Sheet Music Coming Winter 2020NOT Public-Domain Songs for MembersI don’t publish these in this book because they are stillunder copyright protection to the original composer.Diatonic1.2.3.4.Edelweiss 5Hallelujah 4Love Me Tender 6Summertime 8ChromaticSection 2: Diatonic Sheet Music (Public Domain)1. Stuff You Need to KnowI know you’re going to skip this section and go straight tothe songs you hope to play. That’s a mistake, but you arewho you are. If you are reading this, you’ve probablyalready wandered around through the rest of the book.Welcome back. Now read this stuff, it’s helpful.ModesYou don’t really need to know these, but if you arecomposing on harmonica and want to sound extra weird, orif you’re improvising and need to remember where theheck you are, here are the Grecian Modes over C:Copyright Notice If you’re not a creator, you might be under the notion all thestuff on the internet is free for you to use. It’s not. You needto be careful how you use stuff, or you might have a lawyerbugging you. Here’s what you can do with this book. All ofthe songs here are public domain in the United States soyou don’t owe anything to the original composer. However,I hold the copyright to the arrangements, so you need tocheck with me at garyjugert@yahoo.com if you want to usethis book for anything other than your personal education. Please don’t share or copy or redistribute this document inany way. If you know somebody who could benefit fromthis book, have them come to my website and get theirown copy. I also have a Big Book of non-public domainsongs on the way. C Ionian/MajorD DorianE PhrygianF LydianG - MyxolydianA Aoelian/minorB DEFGABCDEDFABSound FilesSound files useful as backing tracks in MP3 format areavailable at https://mammothgardens.com on theharmonica tab and are generated by the sheet music itself.I wouldn’t play anything in this book before listening tothose. In folk music, the way you learned it may bedifferent than what is on the paper.Guitar StuffI’ve provided guitar chords and a tablature. If you are aguitar player, you’ll be fine strumming those chords, andyeah, I know the F chord is everywhere. Conquer it. Youshould consider using arpeggio playing technique too.Ukulele StuffIf you know how to strum the ukulele, I’ve provided thechord shapes. If you know how to read tablature, I’veprovided that too. Often a song in C doesn’t fit well onto theukulele, and so sometimes it goes way too high or way toolow. To deal with that, occasionally I use “Low G” ukuleletuning, but most of the time you can use a High G ukulele. If you read tabs, pluck, strum or roll the chords as you seefit. If you don’t read tablature, you should learn. It’ll makeyour harmonica playing sound ridiculously cool. If you wantstandard notation (with no tablature) because you’re justthat good, drop me an email and I’ll let you know if we canwork that out. Software makes life easy, feeling my time onEarth slipping away makes life more difficult.LyricsI’m not spending a lot of time trying to be the ultimatemusic historian and searching out the best or “mostaccurate” lyrics. I’m getting them close and I’m movingonto the next song. I occasionally need to adjust lyrics tomake the music easier to read or play or to save pages. Ifyou have a different version in your head, do it your way.3

Video FilesVideos are posted at https://mammothgardens.com on theharmonica tab. I don’t lay claim to being a greatharmonica player, nor a videographer, nor any type ofperson you’d want to look at, but I hope the recordings willbe helpful to you.Diatonic Harmonica in CThe hole layout for a diatonic harmonica in the key of C.Harmonica StuffIf you read the harmonica tablature (which is the last lyricline) and don’t play with other instruments, you can usemy sheet music with any harmonica in any key.BlowHoleDrawCare and Maintenance for All HarmonicasIf something seems broken, fix it. You can inhale brokenreeds. You can cut your lip or tongue on the metal.Make sure to keep your harmonica warm, otherwisemoisture condensation can build up and cause jams andrust and all manner of grossness.G3BC4DE5FG6AC7BE8DG9FC10ABending NotesIt is fun to try changing the timbre of the notes by bendingthem and it can allow you to reach notes otherwiseunavailable on your harmonica. You can bend notes byadding muscle pressure, it feels like you’re kissing theharmonica, to draw the lower reeds (holes one through 4)down, and eventually you can do the same thing on theupper reeds when blowing.Preparing to PlayThis is kind of a gross activity, so do it right, or you’ll havea harmonica full of your lunch and you’ll have to clean allthat macaroni and cheese out of your harmonica sooner. E2GFirst Songs to Try on Harmonica: The C Major Scale 4 Kumbaya 4 Ode to Joy 5 Simple Gifts 6 When the Saints Go Marching In 4 You are My Sunshine 3Clean your harmonica regularly with the manufacturer’srecommended cleaners. Ethanol or vinegar will work too,but vinegar tastes way better than cleaning alcohol. You’llneed to disassemble and be able to reassemble yourharmonica and have the proper tools. Don’t bend anythingduring this process or you may be out a harmonica. C1DDiatonic Chords in C A minor: Blow 45 B diminished: Draw 345 C major: Blow Any Three D minor: Draw 456 E minor: Blow 23 F major: Draw 56 G major: Draw 234Wash your hands.Brush your teeth.Drink plenty of water -- and nothing else.Sit up tall and pretty.Breath from your belly not your neck.Tap your tongue before each note and “tooo.”Don’t blow or draw too hard. Less is more.Pucker up. You’ll need to use you kissing muscles.Cup the harmonica with both hands.Move your hands, not your face. When printing individual songs for use in a binder, printsingle-sided and punch the first page on the right-handside so it lays flat face-to-face with the second page.Don’t print out everything. You’ll eventually haveeverything memorized or be able to play by earanyway, so leave stuff in digital form if you can.Harmonica EmbouchureFocus on getting one note out at a time. Purse your lips, but still press the harmonica into your mouth. It should be“in” your lips, not “against” your lips. Using your kissingmuscles to help direct the airflow more than just your lips. The more you play the further into your mouth you’ll beable to keep the harmonica and a better tone will result. Itwill take some time for your mouth muscles to understandtheir new role.4

Chromatic Harmonica in CHere’s the hole layout for the 12-hole chromatic harmonica I use to create this sheet music. If you are just starting out inharmonica, you should master the diatonic stuff first. It’s quite a bit more work to play a chromatic harmonica. The 16-holeharmonica has another octave on the low end, and the 10-hole is missing the upper notes.Key OutBlowHoleDrawC1DKey A#C#12CNote:A# BbC# DbD# EbF# GbG# AbIn the tablature, you’ll see blow notes shown as a simple number like this: 6. You’ll see draw notes listed with a tilde infront like this: 6. If you need to press in the button, I’ll add an asterisk like this: 6* or 6*.5

Sep 19, 2020 · Here’s the hole layout for the 12-hole chromatic harmonica I use to create this sheet music. If you are just starting out in harmonica, you should master the diatonic stuff first. It’s quite a bit more work to play a chromatic harmonica. The 16-hole harmonica has another octave on the low end, and the 10-hole is missing the upper notes. Key Out
