TASTING ROOM EDIQUETTEWhen visiting a wine tasting room consider yourself a guest. Many small, boutique wineries are family-run and oftenthe families reside on the property. The owners and staff want everyone to enjoy their visit. Expectations in wine tasting rooms are different than at wine events such as First Sip and the Spring Wine Show or downtown wine bars. Aftervisiting many wineries in our Lodi area in the last 5 years and talking with the owners, wine hosts and visitors, we havecreated a selection of ideas to keep in mind when visiting a tasting room. Simple rules of etiquette can help to makethe experience enjoyable for all.The Ambience in aWinery Tasting Roomis One of a SubtleSophisticationATTIREYour attire should be semi-dressclothes, however, shorts, flip flopsand athletic shoes are acceptableespecially in the warm climate ofour Central Valley.PARFUME & COLGNESDo not wear perfume or colognethe day you are visiting winerytasting rooms. The smell interfereswith a wine's aroma, not only foryou, but also for those tasting byyou.CONVERSATION & TONEIn the elegance of a winery tastingroom, loud outside voices are notappropriate. Conversational tonesare perfect and fit in well withtalking about the wines you tasteand mingling with other wineenthusiasts who have commoninterests. Do take the time to talkto other visitors. It’s interesting tomeet others with a passion forwine. Some visitors are new towine. Never belittle someone forwhat they think about a wine. Don'tact or sound like a wine snob. There are always those who knowless or more about wine than you.COHERNACYIf you appear drunk, the tastingroom attendant is not permitted,by law, to serve you even if it is atasting. Drunken behavior has noplace in the atmosphere of thetasting room. Wineries deal withthis behavior in different ways, mostoften you will be asked to leave.BUSY TIMETasting rooms can be crowded onweekends. Weekdays are generallyslower and wine hosts have moretime to talk about the wines youtaste. In either case, if the tastingroom is busy, do not elbow yourway to the tasting bar. If the tastingroom is busy, consider stepping backto discuss your wine and enjoy thetasting with other like-mindedpeople. This gives others room tostep up for a tasting. On busy days, somewineries will set up tastingtables or bars outside the tastingroom. Give yourself plenty of time ata winery. Relax and enjoy the winetasting and the ambiance of thetasting room. Many wineries havegift or art displays to browse whiletasting wines. Take your time tastingand enjoy what they have to offer.PRESENATION OF WINE& EXPRESSION OF TASTEThe wines for a tasting arepresented in a particular orderbased upon the style of wine.If you choose not to drink aparticular wine that’s fine. Gentlycover your wine glass with yourfingers to indicate you do notwant to taste a wine. However, keep in mind that the personnext to you may very well enjoyit. want lunch check out therestaurant. It is so much moresubtle than declaring, “I don’t likethat wine.” Not all wine drinkerslike all wines and wine hostsunderstand this. Visitors do notneed to announce to everyonethat they dislike a particular wine.Remember that it is perfectlyacceptable for you to dislikea wine.Style of Your City CStyleOfYourCity.comWINERIES .ofStyleOfLodi.comLODI. TASTING ROOM EDIQUETTEUNPALLETED WINEWhat should you do with the winein your glass after you have tasted? Ifyou do not want the rest of the winein your glass, you can pour it into adump bucket. It is really okay. Inaddition, it may be okay to spit yourwine into the bucket. However itmight be easier to spit into a cup.Ask if there is a cup that you canuse. You can then dump the contents from the cup into the dumpbucket.FOODSome wineries will set out tinycrackers or tiny bites of cheese. Thisis not meant for large consumption. The purpose of the crackers, dips orcheese is to cleanse the palate and tohelp you to decide how the winepairs with food. Some wineries alsohave restaurants. Many wineriesencourage visitors to bring a picniclunch if they wish. Frequently picnictables or patio tables are available.Ask in advance if it is okay to bring apicnic lunch and where to picnic onthe grounds. NOTE: Do not bringwine from another winery or anyother kind of alcohol. Laws restrictwineries and many are only allowedto have their own alcohol on theirpremises.TASTING OF FRUITWine growers, winery staff andvisitors always appreciate goodmanners. If you have theopportunity to visit a vineyard, donot pick the grapes. If you wouldlike to taste a wine grape at harvesttime, be sure to ask prior to doingso. Some wineries don’t mindvisitors strolling through their vineyards and taking a picture or two aslong as they do not disturb thegrape growing process. The grapesare there to produce wine and theyare picked during a very precisetime period decided by the sugarquality needed to produce specificwines. As well the grower has dedicated countless hours of time andexpense into preparing for thebounty of the harvest.POURINGAnother major “Do Not Do” is topick up a bottle and pour your owntasting. Let the wine consultant orserver pour the wine.BUYING WINEWhen you visit a winery, if you likethe wine and want to buy it that’sterrific, but it is not obligatory. Themajority of tasting rooms charge afee to sample approximately 5wines. A general practice is to creditthe tasting fee towards a bottlepurchase.PLANNING YOUR VISITAdvance planning is the key to asuccessful winery outing. Themajority of wineries in our areahave websites. A Google search, avisit to our Wine & Visitor Centerswebsite or the Style of Lodi onlinemagazine will makes it easy tolocate the wineries you would liketo visit. Websites may includehours, types of wines, touravailability and directions andLARGE GROUPSCall in advance for groups largerthan five. Some wineries do nothave room for buses or limousines.Other wineries like to know inadvance if large groups will bearriving so they can provide enoughstaff. Tasting or drinking wine onan empty stomach is not a goodidea.TIPSY TIPSEat well before you go to thewinery. The more food in yourstomach the less alcohol will affectyou. Take bottled water and besure to drink it especially if you willbe visiting another winery. Plan ondrinking as much water as you dowine. This is also vitally importantwhen the weather is hot in ourCentral Valley.TOURSEach winery tour focuses on whatis important to their winery. However, most wineries include a visit tothe press pad where the grapesarrive from the vineyard. Includedwill be the tank room and barrelroom. Most wineries like to includethe history behind their winery. Some of these histories includewinemakers who have come to thenew world to start a winery andothers are entrepreneurs who arefascinated with winemaking. Toursadd to the experience and canprovide great photo opportunities.Ask questions. The winery staff isusually very knowledgeable aboutthe wine, winery and vineyards. Insome cases, the staff will have anotebook behind the counterwhere they can check for information. Remember not everyoneknows everything about wine. Thewine culture can be a fun learningexperience for everyone.Keep these tips in mind and you should have awonderful and memorable tasting experienceWINERIES of LODI

W yyxÜxÇà gçÑxá Éy exw j ÇxWine is served in almost everyparty nowadays. Suppose, you areinvited to a party and there are winesbeing served. You know only about redwine and ask for it. To your surprise, you are asked to choose from variousred wines; Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, etc. You end up confused, thinking which wine to choosefrom. Here's your guide to differenttypes of world-famous red wines. Wineis an alcoholic drink made from fermented grape juice. The process involves using various kinds of yeast, which consume sugar present in thejuice and convert them to alcohol.Wines are generally named after thefruit they are made from. For example, wine made from apple is called applewine, or if it's made from grape, is calledgrape wine.Twisted BarrelWinery1376 E Turner Rd, LodiHere's an interesting factabout the color of wines.Mostly, all kinds of grape juices are colorless.Grapes are soaked with their skin, until thered color bleeds out; this is how red winesget the color. In the process, the amount oftannin present increases. Tannin is a naturalsubstance present in wines responsible for theflavor. Tannin also helps in the aging process, hence, wines with high amount of tannin agefaster. Some of the best red wines areUtÜuxÜtBarbera is a wine from. It has almost similarattributes of Merlot, but is not as famous.Barbera is acidic, light in tannin and is usedas a blending wine. This Italian wine containsflavors of plum fruit and black cherry, and isalso widely used in California. Barbera is veryvolatile and can be served with many populardishes.8VtuxÜÇxà ftâä zÇÉÇCabernet Sauvignon, often referred to as 'TheKing of Red Wines', it is the most common redwine in America. It originated in the Bordeauxwine region of France. This wine is oftenconsidered as one of the best varieties in theworld. Cabernet Sauvignon is blended withCabernet Franc and Merlot, and is purple incolor. This wine is aged in oak barrels formany years. Some of the best Cabernets areaged up to 15 years. The Cabernet Sauvignongrapes grow well in warm climates, so the winetakes more time to mature. In our area theNapa Valley is known as ‘Cab Country’.Cabernets have a flavor of black currant and aspicy aroma. Cabernet Sauvignon is oftentaken as the base wine for making famousblends like, Chateau Mouton Rothschild. Thiswine has many health benefits, as it helps toprevent cardio vascular diseases. CabernetSauvignon is best served with red meat. There are numerous types of redwines. Making an exhaustive list ofred wines is almost impossible.Style of Lodi Magazine A SIP OF SUMMER 2015 Style of Stockton MagazineMeet the owners ofTwisted Barrel Winery,Michael Salimbeni &Mark Tanner. W yyxÜxÇà gçÑxá Éy exw j Çx tÄuxvftÇz ÉäxáxMost novice wine drinkers often chooseCabernet or Merlot. But, as consumersbecome more knowledgeable, they opt forsomething new. Malbec is becoming quite abrand with oenophiles. This grape is generallyfound in Cohors and South West France. Inthe 1800s, a French agricultural engineerexperimented with the idea of growing theMalbec grapes in; and his experiment wassuccessful. The grapes produced in Argentinaare much softer and contain less tannin, whichmakes the wine suitable for blending. Thewine is dark and juicy containing flavors ofplum, raspberry and chocolate. Malbec is bestserved with roasted meat.Sangiovese is a signature red wine grapefrom Tuscany region of Italy. Tuscany isthe agricultural heartland for this grape. This grape takes time to mature andlingers longer on the vine. Italian Chiantiand Chianti Classico are two goodexample of wines made from Sangiovese. The name Sangiovese comes from theword sanguis jovis which means 'blood ofjove'. Jove is the Roman name for godJupiter. First time drinkers may findSangiovese wine quite acidic. It has a fairamount of bitterness because of thepresence of high quantity of tannin.Sangiovese can be served with Italiancuisine. xÜÄÉàfçÜt{Merlot (mare-lo) means easy to drink. This is aperfect red wine for first-time drinkers, as it isvery soft and light. This wine is made from themerlot grape, and is deep in color. Merlot wineis generally less tannic, having high alcoholcontent. It has the flavor of cherry and plum. This wine is mild and less acidic. Popularlygrown in Bordeaux region of France, these arenow grown in California, Washington, Oregon,Italy and Australia as well.Syrah or Shiraz are two names of thesame variety. European vintners use theterm Syrah whereas, Australians call itShiraz. It is popular in Australia,California and France's Rhone Valley. This wine is less acidic, making it moredrinkable. However, French Shiraz isquite acidic. It is deep red in color andexhibits flavors of spice and fruit. Thewine is best served with meat and beef.Syrah has a good aroma.c ÇÉà aÉ ÜPinot Noir grapes are difficult to grow but ifgrown well, these grapes can be made into oneof the best wines in the world. It requires quitean effort to grow this grape. Pinot Noir, knownas Spatburgunder in Germany, requires warmsunny days followed by cool evenings. Becauseof these peculiar condition requirements, PinotNoir is not easily available. Pinot Noir may costyou more as the production is less. This grapeis generally found in the Burgundy region ofFrance, though Oregon and cooler regions ofCalifornia have started growing the graperecently. It is light in color and the amount oftannin is less. It contains juicy fruits and tasteslike strawberry, black cherry, spices, mint, etc.It has a velvety and seductive flavor. Pinot Noirhas an alluring aroma, that is linked t and even. This wine is one of the three varieties (alongwith Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier), used tomake Champagne.Because of its seductiveflavor, Pinot Noir is often associated with.m ÇytÇwxÄZinfandel is found only in California andhas been a cornerstone of the Californiaviticulture scene for a long time. Our veryown, Lodi Ca., is often deemed as the‘Zin capital of the world’ . Zin is oftenconsidered as ladies wine, because of itssubtle and light flavor. An interesting factis that, it is found in both red and whitevarieties, but it's the red version which ismore accepted by wine drinkers aroundthe world. Zinfandel tastes of berries;raspberry, blackberry and cranberry, andare consumed young within 3 or 4 years. It has low to moderate acidity and a highalcohol content. Unlike other wines,Zinfandel blooms in heat and sunshine. These are best served with typicalAmerican fast foods like burgers, tomatosauce pastas and pizzas.WINERIES of LODIHere are some of theinteresting thingspeople have saidabout Pinot Noir.Joel Fleischman ofVanity FairdescribesPinot Noir as,"The most romanticof wines, with sovoluptuous aperfume, so sweetan edge, and sopowerful a punchthat, like falling inlove, they make theblood run hot andthe soul waxembarrassinglypoetic."Master SommelierMadeline Triffonchristened it,"Sex in a glass."Peter Richardsson ofOeno Style, saysPinot Noir is"A seductive yetfickle mistress!"Grilled salmon, chicken and lambare the best pairingfor Pinot Noir.
