JUNE 20, 2021 TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEOrigin of Father’s Day: Happy Father’s Day! While amother’s love and sacrifice have been recognized andhailed by many literary and social expressions, a father’srole and importance in ourlives have been found to receive comparatively less voiceand glamour. Our fathers takeup struggles and pains withoutvisible tears. They stand asrocky foundations for us tobuild our lives. Most of us donot need a particular date to celebrate our love for ourfathers. But still let us make it a day to specially remembertheir sacrifices and love for us. Let us take some effort toacknowledge and appreciate them. On May 1, 1972,signing the proclamation 4127 and declaring Father’s Dayas a national holiday, President Richard Nixon stated, “Leteach American make this Father’s Day an occasion for renewal of the love and gratitude we bear to our fathers, increasing and enduring through all the years.” Let us alsopray for all the fathers to be empowered with God’sgraces, inspired by St. Joseph, to be faithful in fulfillingtheir vocation to be the guardians of the souls of all in thefamily. Dear fathers, Thank you for your “yes” to the callto be the shepherds of the domestic Church.Pray for Fathers. We thank you, God,for the gift of our fathers, for grandfathers and godfathersand fathers-in-law.Send your Holy Spirit upon our fathers,in whose laps we were cradled,on whose knees we were bounced,by whose hands we were fed, instructed, and at times corrected,in whose company we learned to workand play and pray,at whose side we hear your wordand celebrate your mysteries.Heal their pains and disappointments.Forgive all that needs to be forgiven.Give to them the good that theyhave given others.Welcome into your armsthose who have died.Fill this world, O God, with a father’s love.We ask this through your Son Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray to you as Abba.He lives and reigns with you andthe Holy Spirit, who is Father of the poor, one God forever and ever.Amen.Father’s Day Thought: Marriage is the foundation of thefamily. Children need this solid foundation more than anything else a parent can give them. That is why divorce andchildren outside of marriage are some of the greatesttragedies. And that undoubtedly explains the extremely3high correlation betweenthe relationship of our parents and the level of hardship we face in our life.Just about every majorsocial problem we havehas at least one correlativefactor in common: brokenhomes. That is not to saythere aren’t plenty of exceptions. But it’s an obvious factor. And I firmly believe it is the most important factor of all.“The family is the first essential cell of human society.” – PopeJohn XXIII“As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes thewhole world in which we live.” – St. Pope John Paul IIIf we have broken families then we have a broken society.Unfortunately, we live in a culture that increasinglybelieves divorce is no big deal. And believes that sex andchildren outside of a marriage bond is just fine for the children. And at the root we have a sentiment that “spousesmay come and go, but I will always love my children.”But your children need you and your spouse. That iswhy your marriage and your love for each other is themost important thing you can focus on. For a married person, it’s your first vocation in life. It comes even before loving your kids. You love your kids most by loving each otherfirst. That is what ensures a safe and solid environment foryour children to grow within.First Holy Communion: Congratulations to Olive Burleywho received her First Holy Communion last Sunday, June13th at the 8:00 a.m.Mass. This is one of the three earthlybirthdays celebrated in the CatholicLiturgical Calendar, the others being of Jesus and Mary. John had animportant role in the history of salvation, as the forerunner of theMessiah. He was prophesied as thevoice that proclaims, “make straight in the desert a highway for our God!” (Is 40:3). John’s call for repentance becomes more significant for our world today as we can seemany deny sin. This Solemnity is an invitation to us to be thevoice of God and be inspired by John the Baptizer to leada life of repentance and selflessness. JUNE 20, 2021 TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEPastor’s GreetingST. THOMAS AQUINAS’ TEACHING SONG OFCORPUS CHRISTIIt is reported that the Catholicbishops of the United States this month aregoing to debate whether or not it is timelyto compose and publish a pastoral letter on “Eucharistic Coherence.” That “coherence” would consider the integrityrequired of a Catholic for the proper reception of the MostBlessed Sacrament in Holy Communion. This pre-supposesthe entire dogmatic Catholic doctrine on the Blessed Sacrament and what is demanded by the sacrament itself, at aminimum, for its worthy reception. The proper dispositionsof faith, one’s relationship to the Catholic Church, the moralstatus of one’s conscience (properly formed), and the integrity of one’s public witness—all of these factors also cometo bear on the debate. So, I propose to offer my own considerations about all this over about eight weeks, beginninghere with St. Thomas Aquinas’ “teaching” sequence composed to be sung at Mass before the Gospel on the Solemnity of Corpus et Sanguinis Christi. This will be followed byfive essays reflecting on John 6—The Bread of Life Discourse (which will be the source of the Sunday gospels inlate July-August). The last essay will be on “Catholic Coherence” because it is the larger context of which the topic of“Eucharistic Coherence” begs the question. What, you may ask, is a “sequence”? Very special liturgical feasts or celebrations in the Latin Rite called forextended musical meditations to follow the scriptures andpsalm prior to the gospel. This composition was called a“sequence” (it followed the psalm) and was often joyousand celebratory, building up to the singing of the alleluia. The “Dies Irae” of the funeral Mass offered a meditation ofa much more somber sort. Easter, Pentecost, Corpus Christi, and Our Lady of Sorrows still have proper sequences. TheSequence of Corpus Christi, attributed to Aquinas, celebrated the Church’s doctrine on the Holy Eucharist. I offer ithere for the same purposes.SEQUENCE OF CORPUS ET SANGUINIS CHRISTISion, now your Savior praising, Singinghymns, your anthems raising, Praise yourPrince and Shepherd true. Strive with allyour praise bestowing, Grandeur far beyond your knowing, Never can you sing hisdue. Special theme for glad thanksgiving Is the living and life-giving Bread todaybefore you set: His sacred bread, oursacred meal, Same then and now, no doubtwe feel, as When the Twelve at table sat. Full and joyous be your singing Loud andlively voices ringing, Jubilant, our spirits lift. Keep this day in solemn fashion, Finalmeal before his passion, Wonderful thissacred gift. Here the new law's new oblation, By the new King's revelation, Nowcompletes the ancient rite: Christ's newPasch the old completing, Truth the shadows7now defeating, Light dispels the gloom ofnight. What he did at supper seated,Christ ordained to be repeated, His memorial ne'er to cease: Christ's instructionguides our taking Bread and wine, thusconsecrating, Saving Victim, Christ ourpeace. Dogmatic truth each Christianlearns, Bread into his flesh he turns, To hisprecious blood the wine: Sight here fails, nor thought conceives, But a dauntless faithbelieves, Resting on a power divine. Here beneath these signs are hidden Realities to sense forbidden; Signs alone are allwe see: Blood is drink; and flesh is eaten; Yet in either wondrous token Christ entire we know to be. Whoever of thisfood partakes, Does not rend the Lord norbreak; Christ is whole to all who take: Thousands are, as one, receivers, One, asthousands of believers, Christ with us onewhole to make. Bad and good the feastare sharing, But what diverse fates preparing, Endless life or else perdition. Life tothese, to those damnation, See how likeparticipation Ends in opposite conditions. When the sacrament is broken, Doubtingnot, but faith awoken That each partialoutward token Does the very Whole contain. The Risen Lord entire resides,Breaking but the sign divides, Jesus Christ, the same abides, Undiminished does remain. Bread of Angels here is given, Tothe Pilgrim who has striven See the Children's Bread from Heaven, Which on Dogsmay not be spent. Christ the prototypesfulfilling: Isaac bound, a victim willing, Paschal Lamb, its life blood spilling, Manna inthe desert sent. All things you know andcan command. Your sheep on earth fed byyour hand Are welcomed guests inHeaven's land, All Heirs and Holy Ones tostand, In that City soon to be. Amen.Alleluia! This poetic version of the sequence of Corpus Christi is inpart a new translation of the Latin original but draws upontwo existing English renditions: that of The Roman Missal 1964 by the NCCB; and that of Devoutly I Adore Thee, thePrayers and Hymns of St. Thomas Aquinas, translated andedited by Robert Anderson and Johann Moser, Sophia Institute Press, 1993 Robert Anderson and Johann Moser.Further use will require the proper permissions.Rev. Richard C. Meredith, 2000.Let us not forget the loved ones of our deployed military personnel.Pray without ceasing.
