STC REGION TODAYChemung, Schuyler and Steuben CountiesAPPALACHIAN REGIONALCOMMISSION APPLICATIONCYCLE BEGINSApplications are due June 6, 2008 inthe STC office for the AppalachianRegional Commission (ARC) 2009funding cycle.The allocation to the AppalachianRegional Commission for fiscal year2009 has been increased from that ofprevious years, so this is a good timeto submit an application!The application form and guidance are available fromSTC by calling 962-5092 or e-mailingstcrpdb@stny.rr.com. Sponsors are advised to completean application only after discussing it with STC staff.Those submitting construction projects should talk toTom McGarry, Economic Development Coordinator,and those with non-construction projects should talk toMarcia Weber, Executive Director, although both staffmembers can provide information on the program.“We want to discuss potential projects and the processwith people ahead of time,” said Marcia Weber. “Welike to review drafts before an application form iscomplete. There are many details that we discuss withapplicants that will make their applications stronger.”New York StateSpring 2008STC’s Annual MeetingThe recent groundbreaking for the expansion ofCorning Incorporated’s Sullivan Park Research Centerbrought Research and Development into the spotlight.The number of jobs to be created by the expansion andthe potential for future business growth as a result ofR&D made this subject, “Beginning the Next Century ofR&D and Innovation at Corning,” a timely and excitingone for the STC annual meeting.Charles Craig, Vice President of Science andTechnology for Corning Incorporated, was the keynotespeaker at the STC annual meeting in February, andparticipants were able to hear first hand about theadvances and inventions made by the Sullivan ParkResearch Center. The response was enthusiastic,even from those who claimed they don’t usuallyunderstand science.Officers for 2008 were elected by the STC Board at theannual meeting.
