In this special issue, we hopeto give you a flavor of how the SDSURetirement Association got started andhow it has progressed. Fortunately, our founding president and his wife,Aubrey and Lucille Wendling, arestill active, as is Norma Summersgill, who was our first vice president andhas been president on two differentoccasions. Former SDSU PresidentThomas B. Day is still active and gavemuch of the support needed to get theAssociation off the ground.A special thanks goes to the editorialcommittee for their support.Jerry W. KoppmanMission AccomplishedReviewing the exciting and impressivepast 25 years of our SDSU RetirementAssociation’s accomplishments, I feelthat our mission has been, and is being, accomplished.Through the dedication andcontributions of our members, we havebeen able to serve the mutual benefitsand interests of our retired facultyand staff, and we facilitate continuingcontributions by members to thefurtherance of the scholarly and otherprofessional objectives of San DiegoState University. When I arrived at SDSU (College) in1954, the college was small enough forfaculty and staff to know and interactwith other campus departments. Asthe college rapidly grew and becamea university, the inter-relationshipsdisappeared.The Retirement Association has givenour members the valuable opportunityto know and interact with retiredfaculty and staff from all colleges anddepartments. New friendships havebeen nurtured.“Faculty and Staff Staying Connected”and all for a worthy cause. Who couldask for anything more!Aubrey Wendling, President1986-1990Pat’s PatterWhen we came to San Diego StateUniversity as young professors, staffand spouses, we never could haveimagined that we would somedayretire from SDSU, and never thoughtabout what would happen to us inthose retirement years, better knownas the ‘golden’ years! But here we are, members of the Retirement Association, making new friends and making morewonderful memories. We all need toexpress our appreciation to those whohad the foresight and drive to beginthis Association 25 years ago. We allbenefit so much from their efforts. Here we are wondering if wecan possibly continue to lead theorganization in a way that benefits allthose who will follow. First we all haveto agree to volunteer some of our timeto making SDSU RA thrive. Then wehave to work hard to get new membersso that the Association will be here in2036 to celebrate the SDSU RA’s 50thanniversary.As your president, I’m committed tofollow in the footsteps of those wholed before me, but I need your help inmaking SDSU RA more vital with eachpassing year.Patricia S. Koppman, President2010-12
