ANNOUNCEMENTSTerry MarksberryClub or Company? As most members know by now, the Club got sobig that our cash flow triggered an IRS 1099.Then we had to file a federal tax return. Sincewe were not a legal entity at the time, wedecided to form a Limited Liability Corporation(LLC).Once you become a corporation, it puts you onthe Florida Secretary of State’s radar. Soon tofollow the Florida Department of Revenuediscovers you and wants their piece of theaction, namely sales taxes if you sell anything. We do!Paying sales taxes requires an extraordinaryamount of accounting and record keeping byindividual transaction. Not fun! So, we decidedto do several things in order to continue to makeitems available to the members and not getoverwhelmed in the process.1. We implemented Point-of-Sale systemsthat provide all of the reporting needed. In the process it enables us to acceptcredit cardsand mostall otherforms ofpayment.3. We added a POS system formembership. You can now join or renewyour membership online or at ourmeetings with cash, check, or creditcard.4. Since the POS system prints a paperreceipt for each transaction, you cansimply use the receipt to get your ammoafter the meetings. No “tickets”required. As a corporation, instead of a Club, the 50/50program is considered gambling. We had threechoices:1. Stop the 50/50 program2. Get a gambling license (if you want thestate looking over your shoulder andauditing you all the time.)3. Accept “Donations” and provide “DonorAppreciation Awards”We chose option #3. Since we operate as a notfor-profit business, we may accept donations. So, if you donate 1 you get 1 white ticket andfor 5 you get 10 white tickets and a blue ticket.Since we cannot afford to give appreciationawards to all donors, we usethe tickets to decide who getsrecognized at the end of themeeting. So, our life as a “little” Villages Senior LifestyleClub is over. We’ll have to follow a new set ofrules and do things a bit differently. Fortunately, most of the changes are behind the scenes andyou won’t notice them. Life goes on 2. We transferred our bookkeeping to ourCPA firm who is, of course, capable ofhandling the new complexities. The Reticle , Straight Shooters NewsletterNovember 2017Page 1 of 8

Dues R Due, Almost!MEMBER MEETING RecapIn past years the dues renewal period was fromDecember 1st to January 31st. Since we have somany members and can now accept renewals atmeetings with our new point-of-sale system, wedecided to accept renewals online beginningNovember 1st and at the member meetings inNovember.By Terry MarksberryDues are officially due by December 31st but wehave always offered a grace period to January31st. This year the cutoff will be January 15th.As an incentive, the first 400 renewals afterNovember 1st willget a free hat pinand be eligible for aSpringfield ArmoryEMP4 drawing inDecember. Thegun was intendedfor the Savannah meeting that was cancelleddue to Irma.Renewals will again be 20 for full membersand 15 for associate members. As usual abouthalf of the dues go for Club insurancerequirements and the rest to support Clubactivities and operational expenses. The Cluboperates as a not-for-profit business andnormally breaks even on a year to year basis. In the coming year the Club will continue tooffer a wide range of member services andactivities. We encourage all members to takeadvantage of the benefits and participate in thenumerous member only events."There's no question that weaponsin the hands of the public haveprevented acts of terror or stoppedthem."- Israeli Police InspectorGeneral Shlomo Aharonisky The Reticle , Straight Shooters NewsletterEveryday Carry OptionsSince Florida issues Concealed Weapons andFirearm Licenses (CWFL) one might wonderwhat “weapons” they are referencing. Thedetails are contained in the FL Statute 790.001(3)(a). Specifically: Dirk (Fixed Blade Dagger) Metallic (Brass) Knuckles Billie (Club) – (Baton) Tear gas gun (seldom used now) Chemical weapon or deviceo Pepper spray/gel – Maceo Stun gun – Taser “Other” deadly weapono Knife (is a deadly weapon)FBI statistics show that 60-80% of assaults arenon-lethal confrontations. As we know from thelaws of self-defense proportionality rule, youcannot draw your firearm, if you are carryingone, to defend against a non-lethal assault if youwould later hope to claim self-defense in court. You would end up being charged with assaultwith a deadly weapon. Therefore, if you do carry a firearm, yousimply must carry a non-lethal alternative fordefense in the 80% of potential assaults youmight face. If you do not carry a firearm, youshould at least carry a non-lethal alternative thatwould give you some means of self-defense inthe vast majority of incidents.November 2017Page 2 of 8

KnivesFirst, realize that a knife is considered a lethalweapon pretty much the same as a gun.In Florida, the laws regardingknives are arguably the worstin the country. FL law saysyou may carry a pocket knifebut fails to define one, leavingthe definition up to the courtsand case law. Basically, all the courts have saidto date is the knife may not have too manyfeatures! All knives may be carried openly. If you wantto strap on a 9” K-Bar, go for it! However, if itis concealed, you need a CWFL. Even a simplepocket knife, if concealed in a purse or glovebox, if open, is considered a concealed weaponand requires a license.Bottom line, use a knife for opening boxes andsuch, but NOT for self-defense. Your potentialassailant is very likely younger, faster, and mayhave experience with handling a knife. Not agood match. You have better options.Pepper Spray/GelYou may carry pepper spray or gelopen or concealed without a licenseprovided it’s for self-defense. (I’mnot sure what else it may be goodfor?) You may not take pepperspray/gel on school property or to aschool event. You also may notpoint it at a law enforcement officer. We recommend pepper gel vs. spray for acouple of reasons. The distance on spray islimited and you must be sure which way thewind is blowing. Pepper Gel, on the other hand, shoots a stream that can be aimed and is goodfrom 10 to 18 feet depending on the particularunit.Pepper Gel helps to keep the assailant at a safedistance. You should spray from ear to ear, across the eyes. The gel will give you severalminutes to escape the situation. The Reticle , Straight Shooters NewsletterStun DevicesStun guns, even small ones, are a very effective non-lethalmeans of self-defense. Whileyou must be in contact withyour assailant to actually useit, a stun gun is very intimidating. You maycarry a stun device open or concealed without apermit. If you are being approached by a potentialassailant, show the stun gun and “zap” it a fewtimes. Most bad guys with half a brain willdecide to seek another victim that cannot defendthemselves. It is important to note that if the assailant hasyou in his grasp you can still use the stun gun onhim without harmingyourself.Stun guns are fairlyinexpensive, come indifferent sizes, and can even be combined with adecent flashlight.Bottom line, stun guns and pepper gel are bothexcellent means of self-defense and either oneor both are recommended for everyday carry.Other self-defense items were discussed in themeeting. To review the full presentation, go tothe page HERE on the Club’s website.Everybody needs a Sig!Sig Sauer is one of the premier gunmanufacturers in the country. Although thecompany was founded in 1853 in Switzerland asa wagon factory, in 1860 they decided torespond to the competition for a new rifle forthe Swiss army. They won! That win generated an order for30,000 rifles. In the early 1900s they startedNovember 2017Page 3 of 8

producing handguns with the introduction of theP49 and later the P210.“XM17 Modular Handgun System. Thespecifications covered 315 pages! In the 1970s Sig began to grow by acquisition. And, lucky for us, in 1980 they decided that theU.S. market was the place to be. They createdSig Arms and settled at Tyson’s Corner, VA toimport their P220 & P230.There were 9 quality competitors that met all ofthe specifications. Sig Sauer won the contractwith the P320.In 1990 Sig Arms built amanufacturing facility atExeter, NH and beganproducing the P229 in .40caliber S&W.In the late 1990s they made several newacquisitions and changed their name to SigSauer in 2007. Shortly after, they tripled theirworkforce, invested 18 million in state-of-theart manufacturing facilities and significantlyexpanded their engineering & designcapabilities.Today Sig Sauer is one of the upscalecompanies making: Pistols Rifles & Shotguns Ammunition Silencers Red DotsThey also have a world class training academyteaching 100s of advanced classes forprofessionals and normal humans like us.Two of their mostpopular carry guns arethe P238 .380 and theP938 9mm. Both aresuperior quality guns andare most noted for havinga slide that is very easy to rack. (Even acaveman can do it!)We won’t go into all of their product lines herebut should mention the P320.Almost 10 years ago, the US Army launched aRequest For Proposal (RFP) to replace theBeretta M9 in use since 1986. They called it the The Reticle , Straight Shooters NewsletterThe P320 offers extreme modularity. There are4 different grip sizes and the gun can beconverted to 4 different calibers.Needless to say, the P320 is a masterpiece ofdesign and craftsmanship. Now for the best part, theSig Sauer P320 RXCompact version with theslide mounted Romeo1red dot optic, shown tothe right, will be the Donor Appreciation Awardfor November! Two lucky donors will have a really niceChristmas!INSTRUCTOR’S CORNERBy Stephen MoselLIGHT ‘EM UP!A well designed, high-lumen, emergencytactical flashlight is most certainly a usefuladditional tool for the defense of ourselves andloved ones. Besides, it comes in damn handywhen our old brains are doing their best tofumble for our keys at the entrance to our homelate at night. (I was meaning to fix that porchlight!) But truth be told, few of us that carryinclude a light on our carry gun. Some includean attached laser or laser/light combo, but thespecial holster you would have to buy putsmany off and most keep to a simple set up withno extra bells and whistles on the firearm. Butthis article isn’t about carry guns. It’s all aboutthe defense of your home and the vital necessityof target recognition.November 2017Page 4 of 8

I’ll start out by saying that it’s essential for anymember of The Villages Straight Shooters whoowns a home defense gun to take the PersonalProtection in the Home class. It makes youaware of all those vital details you may not havethought about and is very well taught. You can’tjust buy a gun, throw it in your nightstand and –without any further training - consider yourhome protected. The safety rule that states thatyou have to be aware of your target and what’sbeyond (as well as what’s in front of the target)is the point in question here. Just the fact thatyou hear noises at 2:00 AM that you’d swearsound like someone breaking in, doesn’t make ita good idea to shoot at the dim silhouette of adark figure in your living room. It could verywell be your tipsy neighbor, Herman, forcefullyentering the wrong residence after a bender. Forwhat should be obvious reasons, you’ve GOT toidentify your target before firing. So, thequestion begs, what’s the best way to do that? The aforementioned tactical flashlight iscertainly an option andhaving one near yourfirearm is always agood idea. But unlessyou’ve trainedextensively in onehanded shooting or theseveral tested law enforcement techniques ofshooting while manipulating a flashlight, it isn’talways the best choice. Having a high-lumen(500-800 ) light designed for your particularfirearm is a viable and simpler way for theaverage shooter to light up the night. As you’llsee in the attached photo, your hands never haveto move from the proper two-handed gripyou’ve hopefully trained with in order toactivate the light. (Notice how the paddlecontrol on the light falls naturally below thesupport hand thumb.) I know, I know – I’veheard the old argument that they’ll know exactlywhere you are if the light is at the end of thegun. Believe me, holding a flashlight up by yourhead won’t improve your odds much andlessens your chance of hitting your targetbecause you’re firing with one hand. Anyway, the point of a high-lumen light is to temporarily The Reticle , Straight Shooters Newsletterblind your attacker while identifying him at thesame time. You do, however, have to practicethis maneuver around the walls of your house(without ammo in the gun!), as even temporarilyflashing the light near a white wall in the darkwill only serve to screw up your vision as well.(Ask me how I know!)There are a number of manufacturers whospecialize in thesepistol lights (i.e.Streamlight –Surefire, etc.) andmany options tochoose from.Whatever type oflight you finallydecide upon, practice – practice – practice, andbe sure the batteries are up to snuff beforeretiring each evening. You’ll have gone a longway toward protecting you and yours, andalways properly identifying your target is aboutas basic as it gets in the world of shooting. Oh,and did I mention practice?!MEET THE MEMBERBy Stephen MoselTHE QUIET MANBill Long, a fiveyear firearmsinstructor with TheVillages StraightShooters, is one ofthe nicest guysyou’d ever want tomeet. This softspoken fellow from “The Windy City” has aneasy teaching style that brings a calmingconfidence to the students he’s working withand has been a big asset to the Club for all thattime.Although born in Chicago, he spent somesummers in Wisconsin where he was introducedto the world of shooting, hunting small gameNovember 2017Page 5 of 8

and plinking with a .22 at the tender age ofseven. But that early foray into firearms wouldbe the last contact he was to have with gunsuntil his daughter invited Bill and his wife,Diane, to go with her and her husband to a rangein Elgin, Illinois in 2012. His son-in-law had acontact we can onlydream about: a bosswho suppliedammunition to thecity of Chicago!(Sigh!) Both Dianeand Bill very muchenjoyed shootingthe supplied Beretta and Glock 17.In more Diane-related news, he first met hisfuture bride in a Chicago pizzeria. (Ah, theromance!) They married in 1973.Bill was the youngest of six kids – by a longshot. In fact, his two older brothers served inWorld War II, with one, not coming back andhaving a Chicago intersection named after him.Another brother served in Korea. Bill was, himself, drafted, but although his high testscores and educational background promptedcalls from the Marines, Coast Guard and eventhe Secret Service, urging him to join theirranks, he was never called up and continued hiscareer. His technical education lead him to jobsas Production Manager for NITEK International– a supervisor with DECISION ONE CORP. – amanager with OSHIKIRI CORPORATION OFAMERICA – a manager with MARSELECTRONICS INTERNATIONAL and evena stint as a self-employed custom woodworker.Due to some enticing advertisements, Bill andDiane visited The Villages in 2002. Back then, they treated potential buyers quite well with 150.00 dollars in “funny money”, charged only 50.00 per night in some nice townhouses inSpanish Springs, and pick up at the airport in alimo stocked with drinks. Sight unseen and stillliving in the Chicago area, they bought theircurrent home in 2009 but didn’t make the moveto Florida until 2011. The Reticle , Straight Shooters NewsletterBill joined The Straight Shooters in 2012because of the impressively organized andinformative meetings and activities. Hevolunteered shortly after that to become aninstructor and has remained a fixture at theranges of many Club shoots and classroomofferings ever since. Although he chooses not tocarry a concealed firearm outside the house,Bill’s ongoing firearms education includes hisparticipation in the International DefensivePistol Association. He hopes that future VSSofferings will include even more action shootingevents. Say hello to him at one of the meetingsor organized Club shoots. You really won’tmeet a nicer guy!Seminar Review, October 2017Red Dot Optics for HandgunsThe Red Dot Optics presentation and discussionwas presented.
