INTRODUCTIONCaptain Joy's Star Trek is a GURPS (4th ed.) sciencefiction campaign set in the original series era of Star Trek.CAMPAIGN ASSUMPTIONSChanges from the TV show have been introduced tomake Star Trek more suitable for a role-playing game. You will begin as an officer fresh out of The Academy. Senior bridge officers delegate difficult and importantmissions to “prime teams" of less experienced officers. Counselors/psychiatrists/social scientists play animportant role (like in The Next Generation). Phaser stun is not automatic; everyone gets a HT roll toresist. Setting your phaser to disrupt or disintegrate willnot cause things to neatly vanish; it blows them upmessily or bores a neat hole right through them, respectively. Starfleet grudgingly issues body armor. This campaign uses the GURPS rules system. If you'renot familiar with GURPS (the Generic UniversalRoleplaying System by Steve Jackson games), you shouldlearn about GURPS first (at least a little bit) before youbegin creating your character.USING THIS BOOKStar Trek 2: Officers directs you to Captain Joy's GURPSStar Trek website as it walks you through adding a Starfleetofficers template to your character sheet. It is impossible tomake your Star Trek character without access to thatwebsite.A companion book, Star Trek 1: Species, walks youthrough the details of your species and pre-Starfleetbackground.If you want to experience the events of your character’slife as they did, then begin with Star Trek 1: Species andstart with your species template and background lens.Alternatively, start with this book and determine yourStarfleet niche first, then use Star Trek 1: Species andchoose a species template and background lens thatsupports it.A Character Creation Worksheet is also available to helpyou track information generated as you create a Starfleetofficer character.I recommend using either the GURPS Character Sheet(free) or GURPS Character Assistant ( 14.99 as of 24March 2018, Windows only) program to build and maintainyour character. Should you prefer to go old school pen andpaper, there are official and fan made blank charactersheets that you can print out and fill in.ABOUT CAPTAIN JOYCaptain Joy has been running GURPS Star Trek games, off and on, since 2007.DISCLAIMERSThe material presented here is my original creation, intended for use with the GURPS system from SteveJackson Games. CHAPTER ONE1. OFFICER TEMPLATEM5: Categorisation of life form readings recorded.Recommendations for general survey party: Scienceofficer Spock, Astrobiologist Phillips, GeologistCarstairs.KRIK: Well, the only difference in reports andrecommendations is the landing party personnel. That'sonly a matter of judgment.DAYSTROM: Judgment, Captain?SPOCK: Captain, the computer does not judge. It makeslogical selections.KRIK: Why pick Carstairs instead of Rawlins? Carstairs isan ensign, no experience. This is his first tour of duty.Rawlins is chief geologist.DAYSTROM: Aren't you really more interested in why M-5did not select you and Doctor McCoy? Well, let's find outanyway. M-5 tie-in.M5: M-5.DAYSTROM: Explanation for landing partyrecommendation.M5: General survey party requires direction of scienceofficer. Astrobiologist Phillips has surveyed twenty ninebiologically similar planets. Geologist Carstairs servedon merchant marine freighters in this area. Once visitedplanet on geology survey for mining company.DAYSTROM: Why were the Captain and the Chief MedicalOfficer not included in recommendation?M5: Non-essential personnel.–"The Ultimate Computer", TOS episode 2x24At the most basic level, you are defined by your species :Human, Andorian, Tellarite, Vulcan, etc., and yourdepartment: Command, Academics, Counseling, Medical,Engineering, Operator, Security. playing and that your prime team needs. If you haven’talready, check with any active players and your GM to getan idea what departments are already accounted for. Nodepartment is more vital than any other and a good primeteam draws from disparate departments.OFFICER TEMPLATEDo not proceed with character creation until your GMhas approved your department choice.Prime Team: The Best of the BestYou are the elite of Starfleet, a Prime Team, asmall band of multitasking experts who are thebest that the Federation can send on variousspecial missions. A Prime Team is a combinationof a commando team, gang of spies, hostagerescue squad, and special missions force.GURPS 3rd ed. Prime Directive, p. 20RANDOM DEPARTMENTFor those who prefer to let fate make thesedecisions, the following table is provided.Die #1 Die #2 l5*Engineering6*Operators* If you roll doubles, i.e. if Die #2 Die #1, thenyou are a Security officer.Your Starfleet Officer template represents your first twoyears of course-work and training at Starfleet Academy, aswell as your rank and responsibilities as a commissionedofficer. Go to the Starfleet Divisions section of the librarycomputer, access your Department, and add its OfficerTemplate to your character sheet. The points in the Officer Template must be spent asstipulated. E.g. you must put one point into Vacc Suit/TL11skill even if you already have one point in Vacc Suit/TL11from a Personal Background lens. I.e. your training at TheAcademy results in you putting an additional characterpoint into your Vacc Suit/TL11 skill. (You could go backand revisit your Personal Background lens and reassign thatinitial point in Vacc Suit/TL11 to something else in thatlens if you wanted to.)MEDICAL DOCTORSAdding an Officer TemplateAn Officer template represents your experience atStarfleet Academy. It includes the base Officer template, aStarfleet Academy Degree lens, a few ExtracurricularActivity Modules, and your first Department Certification.CAMPAIGN DISADVANTAGE LIMITDisadvantages in your Officer Template and itsassociated lenses and modules do count against thecampaign's disadvantage limit.Last updated Sunday, May 17, ose-short-skirtsand-boots.htmlMedical doctors are an exception. They graduatefrom Starfleet Medical Academy with rank lieutenantjunior grade; they should change their rank fromEnsign to Lt. JG on their character sheet; this cost nocharacter points.Where the Officer Template requires you to choose asubset of skills from a broader list, do so. Note that some ofyour “choices” may be forced: if you don’t already have atleast one point in Computer Operation, then you mustchoose Computer Operation; if your Swimming skill levelis 10, then you must put one point into Swimming; etc.The Survival skill (should you choose it) requires you tochoose a specialty; a switch/tab at the bottom of the librarycomputer monitor should allow you make an informedchoice. All tech skills are tech level 11 (TL11), except forFirst Aid which is tech level 9 (TL9).Officer Templates5 of 12

BUYING OFF OFFICERTEMPLATE DISADVANTAGESDisadvantages in an Officer template can be boughtoff normally. (B291-2) These will naturally have ingame effects. For example, buying off Duty (Starfleet)means you are no longer in Starfleet. Buying off Codeof Honor (Starfleet) or Sense of Duty (Federation)could result in loss of promotion or worse. Before continuing to the next section and adding yourDegree Lens, double check and correct for any doublelistings (which happens when a template or lens you addvia the GURPS Character Sheet or GURPS CharacterAssistant program contains an ability you already had onyour character sheet). E.g. if you have ElectronicsOperation (Science) skill listed twice, add up how manytotal points you have in Electronics Operation (Science);set one of the skills to that total amount then delete theduplicate. E.g. instead of having Electronics Operation(Science) listed twice with 1 character point in each, change one of the skills to reflect that you have 2 characterpoints in Electronics Operation (Science) then delete theother entry. Note, a skill with a different specialty isconsidered a different skill. E.g. Electronics Operation(Media) is not the same skill as Electronics Operation(Science).DEGREE LENSMEDICAL DOCTORSMedical officers that are M.D.'s are an exception:they are not required to purchase a Starfleet AcademyDegree Lens. They graduate with an M.D. fromStarfleet Medical Academy instead of a B.S. from(generic) Starfleet Academy. You will pick yourmedical degree when you choose your first MedicalDepartment certification. While most career Medicalofficers graduate from Starfleet Medical Academy, doing so is not required; it is okay to graduate fromStarfleet Academy as an Ensign with a StarfleetAcademy Degree lens and a non-M.D. alized-starfleetdiplomas?trk profile certification titleAs part of your Officer Template, you must choose aStarfleet Academy Degree Lens. Your Starfleet AcademyDegree Lens represents the degree – BA, BS, orengineering – you earned at Starfleet Academy. Go to the"Starfleet Academy Degrees" section of the librarycomputer, choose your degree, and add it to your charactersheet. The 12 pts in SFA Degree lenses must be spent asstipulated. E.g. if your chosen degree includes 1 point spenton Electronics Operation (Scientific) skill you must spend6 of 12that point on Electronics Operation (Scientific), eventhough the Starfleet Academy Template already requiresyou to put 1 point into Electronics Operation (Scientific).I.e. your degree requires you to put an additional point intoyour Electronics Operation (Scientific) skill. In thisexample, make sure you actually add the point to yourElectronics Operation (Scientific) skill. Do not add asecond Electronics Operation (Scientific) skill to yourcharacter sheet–something you might accidentally do ifyou're just blithely adding templates and lenses via theGURPS Character Sheet program. As always, choosespecialties where instructed. If your skill levels in all of your degree’s skills are 14 orhigher, then you graduate with honors.https://www.flickr.com/photos/x-ray delta one/8286940782As part of your Officer Template, you must put 8 pointsinto Extracurricular Activity modules. These modulesround out your colorful Academy experience with thoseskills and abilities you picked up while you weren’tstudying. Go to the "Extracurricular Activities" section ofthe library computer and spend 2 to 4 points in two to fourdifferent Extracurricular Activities, for a total of 8 points. You may spend the 2 to 4 points on the options within eachExtracurricular Activity lens however you choose.Officer TemplatesLast updated Thursday, June 20, 2019

DOUBLE MAJOR OR MINORObtaining an additional degree is handleddifferently than other extracurricular activities.FIRST DEPARTMENTCERTIFICATION Double Major (prerequisite: Workaholic): add asecond Starfleet Academy Degree Lens. When bothdegrees have the same skill, do not double-spendpoints on that skill. Instead, spend the amount ofpoints required by the degree that requires the mostpoints. E.g. If you double major and both degreesrequire you to put points into Engineer (Electrical),you only have to put as many points as the degreethat requires the most points for that skill. If, in theend, you find you’ve exceeded your 100 characterpoints budget, you may have to return to this sectionand replace your too-expensive Double Major withExtracurricular Activities that sum fewer, though noless than, 8 points. Minor: add a second Starfleet Academy DegreeLens, but only put 6 pts into it.In either case, you must still put at least 2 points intoone more typical Extracurricular Activity module.Characters with the Laziness disadvantage [B142] arelimited to Cultural, Partying, and Underworld as their firstand second choices, and may not choose Double Major orMinor or in any case. Characters with the Workaholicdisadvantage [B162] must take a Double Major or Minor. This assumes you went into Starfleet Academy with one ofthese disadvantages, most likely due to your Backgroundlens. Disadvantages acquired after graduation, e.g. as partof a Department lens, do not restrict your ExtracurricularActivity choices. As part of your Officer Template, you must choose yourfirst Department Certification. Your DepartmentCertification represents hands on training in one of manyjobs available to Starfleet officers. Go to the StarfleetDivisions section of the library computer, access yourDepartment of choice, access the “Ens. Certs.” switch/tabat the bottom of the monitor, and choose your firstdepartmental certification. You graduate the Academy with one (and only one)ensign-level Departmental Certification in your departmentof choice. If you're concerned about promotion, choose acertification that combines with other ensign-levelcertification to form the lieutenant junior grade andlieutenant-level certifications that you eventually want.MEDICAL DOCTORSMEDICAL DOCTORSMedical doctors are an exception: they need onlypick one Extracurricular Activity, which they must putat least 3 points into. Many of these skills are also options in other templatesand lenses. Remember to always add character points toexisting skills when you already have them; don't have thesame skill double listed on your character sheet.Last updated Sunday, May 17, urvedhallways.160969/page-2Medical doctors are an exception: they must takeeither the Intern Physician or Intern Surgeon LtJGlevel certification. (These are more expensive thanEnsign-level certifications, which is why the StarfleetAcademy Degree lens is waived for Medical doctors.)Note that Certifications do not have a fixed point costlike most templates and lens. They cost whatever it takes toget your skills to the list values. This will typically costabout 8 points, assuming you have 12’s in any relevantBasic (or Secondary) Attributes, usually IQ and/or DX.Officer Templates7 of 12

CHANGING SKILL LEVELSChanging your attributes—IQ, DX, HT, Will, orPerception—will change your skill level in all theskills based on them. For this reason, it can be a goodidea to use discretionary points to set your Basic (andSecondary) Attributes before putting points into yourFirst Department Certification. In any case, if at anytime during character creation you lower an Attribute, you’ll need to revisit your First DepartmentCertification to make sure you’re still meeting theminimums. If you raise an Attribute, be aware thismight raise some skill levels in your First DepartmentCertification beyond their minimums; you could thenbump them back down and recover some characterpoints. If your default level for a required skill meets theminimum, you must still put one character point into thatskill to represent time spent and familiarity. If because ofprevious experience (e.g. SFA Degree lens) you alreadyhave one or more points in a required skill and you satisfythat skill's minimum level, then you do not need to put anyadditional points into that skill. As always, remember to add character points to existingskills when you already have them; don't have same skilldouble listed on your character 7311/After adding your Officer Template, Degree,Extracurricular Activities, and First DepartmentCertification to your character sheet, submit it to your GMfor approval.8 of 12Officer TemplatesLast updated Thursday, June 20, 2019

CHAPTER TWO2. PROMOTIONOfficers are not required to seek promotion, but manydo. To represent an officer of rank higher than Ensign, spend the points necessary to add the appropriate Rank'sLens to the existing Officer Template. To promote anexisting character from his or her current rank to the next,e.g. from Lieutenant Junior Grade to Lieutenant, follow theguidelines under the "Promotion" subheading for yourcurrent rank in your department's sections of the librarycomputer. There you will find the specifics for promotionwithin each department, like the many certificationsoffered. For ease of reference, the requirements common to alldepartments are presented in the Starfleet section of thelibrary computer.A typical officer spent approximately threeyears at the rank of ensign. (TNG:"Datalore")–"Starfleet ranks", Memory AlphaLast updated Saturday, June 22, 2019THE PURPOSE OF RANKSStarfleet is not a purely military organization, but ithas adopted a rank structure. While officers of higherrank enjoy greater authority and freedom, the officer incharge of a mission may not be the ranking officer ofthe team. Instead, mission leaders are determined on acase-by-case basis by their superiors who take thefollowing into consideration: the sponsoring department the availability of Command officers the desire to groom low level officers for promotionAdditionally, Counseling and Medical officers canrelieve a higher ranking officer of duty if, in theirprofessional opinion, they are not fit for duty. It isunderstood that the ranking Command Division officeralways has final authority on matters dealing with theship or facility under his/her command.Officer Templates9 of 12

RANK EXPECTATIONSEnsignAn ensign's primary duty is professional growth, either through cross-training (generally within theirdepartment) or as an expert in a field of interest. They manage enlisted crewmen. Ensigns themselves aresupervised by more senior officers as well as their (nominally) subordinate chief petty officer.LieutenantJunior GradeOfficers at this rank typically hold support positions on starships and Starfleet facities. At this rank, theyhave proven their ability to perform acceptably in Starfleet. This is the rank bestowed on medical doctorsupon completion of their studies and training at Starfleet Medical Academy. Officers that derive moresatisfaction from their work than managing subordinates, e.g. career scientists, engineering specialist, never progress past this rank.LieutenantStarfleet lieutenants are expected to be effective leaders with broad expertise in their department.Promotion to the lieutenant and higher ranks are given on an as needed basis. E.g. a starship might run ona three-shift schedule (alpha, beta, and gamma), and each department will have a single lieutenant on dutyeach shift. Generally, less than 10% of a ship’s crew will be made up of officers of rank lieutenant orhigher.LieutenantCommanderLieutenant commanders normally serve as division heads, executive officers on smaller vessels, andstarship commanders on the smallest vessels.CommanderThe rank of commander is typically held by the first officers of starships and is also granted to thecommanding officers of the smaller outposts, space stations and starbases.CaptainCaptains of starships, often located hundreds of light years away from and out of communications withhigher authority, needed to be able to function autonomously and make independent command decisionsaffecting Federation policy and countless lives. Accordingly, few Starfleet officers ever gained thecaptaincy of a starship, the result of decades of sustained excellence as a Starfleet leader.10 of 12Officer TemplatesLast updated Saturday, June 22, 2019

CHAPTER THREE3. GEARhttps://www.flickr.com/photos/modern fred/3755296013Information about Starfleet issue equipment, e.g.communicators, tricorders, phasers, environmental suits, etc. is available from the main console of the librarycomputer. Captain Joy has added them to the Star TrekGCS library as well. GURPS Ultra Tech will be used formost other equipment – TL 11 in most cases.Last updated Wednesday, July 4, 2018Appendix11 of 12

APPENDIXGURPS CHARACTERSHEET PROGRAMGURPS CHARACTER ASSISTANTAnother option besides GCS, for PC users, is todownload the official Steve Jackson Games CharacterAssistant application for 14.99 (as of 12 June 2018).Unfortunately, I do not have any Star Trek files for usewith that application, and none of the templates norlenses provided for download on this webpage will beof any use to you.GURPS Character Sheet (GCS) is a free, stand-alone,interactive, character sheet editor that allows you to buildcharacters for the GURPS 4th Edition roleplaying gamesystem. It can be downloaded for free at http://www.gurpscharactersheet.com. The GCS Java programalong with the Star Trek library that Captain Joy hascreated for it allow you to create and update your characteron your computer. Neither are not official Steve JacksonGames supplements.Star Trek GCS FilesCaptain Joy has put together some files for use with theGCS program. Download and unzip the Star Trek.zip file. These files should download to your computer whenselected. If these files open in your browser instead ofdownloading, try right-mouse-clicking or alternate-mouseclicking on the link and selecting "Save Target As" or"Download Linked File As." from the menu. None ofthese files should end with an ".xml" or ".html" suffix; ifthey do, trim the ".xml" or ".html" from the filename. Thefilenames should end with ".gct" or ".glb" so the GCSapplication will recognize them.Once downloaded, unzip the Star Trek.zip file; thisshould create a "Star Trek" folder will all the Star TrekGCS files in it–templates, equipment, etc. Place this "StarTrek" folder in the GCS "data" folder, which is inside theGCS application folder. E.g. On my computer, the GCSapplication folder is called "gcs-4.9.0-mac”, and it residesin my "Applications" folder (along with all my otherapplications: iTunes, Safari, Stellarium, etc.). Inside that"gcs-4.9.0-mac" folder is a "Library" folder. Once the "StarTrek" folder is in the "Library" folder, you should see it inthe “Library Explorer” menu to the left when you launchthe GCS program. If you're new to GURPS, you should check out theGURPS page before continuing. The GCS Program and Character Creation Worksheetare available to assist you in the process of charactercreation. When they disagree with Captain Joy’s webpage, the webpage takes precedence. Inform Captain Joy of thediscrepancy. When building your character, you're often you'reinstructed to choose some subset of abilities from a broaderlist. To do this in GCS, just delete from your character theabilities you don't choose until you're left with only theones you do choose. Once you're done, you should moveyour chosen abilities from the "choose." container, thendelete the empty container.Download GCSGo to the gurpscharactersheet.com web site anddownload the GCS Java program.Getting GCS up and running on a PC is not trivial (on aMac, it is), and there is a learning curve for using theapplication in general. However, once you've got it figuredout, GCS vastly simplifies generating GURPS characters.Or, you could do without an application all together; goold school and use pen and paper.Or, you could tell your GM, Captain Joy, what you want;he can build your character for you.12 of 12GearLast updated Wednesday, July 4, 2018
