SeptemberJune20092009The Fun TimesMary Lou Rosemeyer AwardedHonorary ACE Membership atKennyKon XXBy Dave HahnerWhen the news broke in late February 2009 that Mary LouRosemeyer would be reluctantly stepping down from her positionas Kennywood’s Director of Public Relations, it was hard for manyregional ACE members to take. After all, she was already workingat the park for about a year in the park’s PR Department when theregion held its first official KennyKon in June of 1989, and hadbeen present for almost every one of those 20 fun-filled eventsover the years. After her mother, Ann Hughes, retired from thesame position in the early 1990s, Mary Lou took over for her andbecame the official face of Kennywood ever since. Shortly aftertaking over the position, she became a regular speaker on behalfof Kennywood, Idlewild, and Sandcastle, for not only local eventslike CoasterBash! and KennyKon, but also for the national ACEoff-season events Eastcoaster in Allentown and No Coaster Conin Chicago. She quickly became a true friend to all ACE membersand Kennywood fans everywhere. Her friendly, folksy demeanorduring her presentations became her trademark at these events, along with the many Kennywood pencils that she would oftengive away as prizes to lucky attendees!A Tale of Two T-Shirtsby Dave AltmanThose at KennyKon XX may have noticed many attendeessporting one of two special ACE Western PennsylvaniaT-shirts. Although different shades of blue, the idea for bothwas conceived by Bill Linkenheimer III and the graphics weredesigned by Mike Matscherz. The powder blue shirts were made to promote next year’sCoaster Con XXXIII to be held in Western Pennsylvania. Theshirts premiered this June at Coaster Con XXXII hosted bySilver Dollar City and Worlds of Fun. Worn by ACE WesternPennsylvania members, these shirts invited everyone toPittsburgh next June with the “See Yinz in the Burgh” sloganemblazoned across the back. The navy blue shirts with the XX on the front were madeto commemorate KennyKon XX, the 20th occurrence ofACE’s longest running regional sponsored event. The firstKennyKon was held in 1989 and has been held each yearsince with the exception of 1998 when Kennywood last hostedACE’s annual convention.Photo by Matt AdlerCoaster Con XXXIII promotional T-shirtsIn 1996, she awarded the very first Golden Kenny award toVic Kleman at CoasterBash! Mary Lou developed the awardin collaboration with ACE Regional Reps Gary Baker and BillLinkenheimer III, to honor local members for their outstandingenthusiasm for both ACE and Kennywood. So, it was indeedfitting that the ACE Executive Committee, after learning of thenews of her impending departure from Kennywood near the endof the 2009 season, voted to award her with an Honorary ACEMembership for all of her years of enthusiasm and being such agood friend to ACE. It was presented to her at KennyKon XX onJuly 19, 2009, by the attending members of the ACE ExecutiveCommittee, including ACE president Mark Cole. With both of herparents present, (former Kennywood Entertainment ChairmanCarl Hughes and former Kennywood PR Director Ann Hughes),Mary Lou was totally speechless by the presentation, somethingthat she noted in her very short acceptance speech that didn’thappen very often. With genuine tearful thanks, Mary Loucommented that she was truly honored to receive the award. Now that she is an official ACE member, we hope shecontinues to attend future events, not as a Kennywood PRspokesperson, but as an ongoing friend with ACE long afterretirement.Page 4KennyKon XX commemorative T-shirtsThe Queue LineACE Western Pennsylvania extends a warm welcometo its newest members.Michael Binkley.Nyeema, Roderick, Summarae &Suraya Craighead.Tornado Telstar Kangaroo.Aaron Maricic.Rashod Odom.Shawn Sadecky.Patricia Steinheiser.Upper St ClairPittsburghNew KensingtonClairtonPittsburghNew KensingtonButlerACEwesternPA.org

SeptemberJune 20092009The Fun TimesFlying High with Ravine Flyer IIBy Tammy DatriWhat better way to spend the weekend than two days ofroller coaster riding in July! This fun filled weekend startedwith a trip to Waldameer Park in Erie, PA. The skies were darkand rainy on Saturday July 18th, when we left Pittsburgh andheaded north on Interstate 79. As the cars converged onPresque Isle, the skies cleared, the sun came out and it turnedinto an absolutely beautiful day!Members of the Western New York Coaster Club hosted“Flying High: with Ravine Flyer II” at Waldameer Park. Thisyear’s event turned out to be a huge success with 216 peopleattending representing members from many of the localthrill ride groups including the Western New York CoasterClub and ACE Western Pennsylvania. Some riders traveledlong distances including Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, andMichigan to attend this year’s event.Attendees were greeted at the West Lakeview Picnic Shelter, where they were given a name badge and arm bracelet, theirhands were stamped, and they were sent on their way for afun filled day in the park.As a first time visitor to this park, there were several thingsthat stood out to me as I entered the park for the very firsttime. The first thing to note is how easy it was to get to thepark. It is only a few short miles off of Interstate 79. They offerfree parking immediately adjacent to the park making it easyto access your vehicle throughout the day. As you walk intothe park, you notice how many people are carrying covereddishes, coolers, and miscellaneous picnic items. The park issurrounded by picnic pavilions which were all occupied bycompany picnics, family reunions, and the general public.Large signs mark each pavilion with that day’s occupants. Thepavilions are surrounded by trees and beautiful landscapingwhich set the stage for a relaxing day. There is also a verylarge indoor facility for parties and shows. One of the most notable things about the park is thatadmission is still FREE. Waldameer Park consists of botha traditional amusement park and a water park. The parkstill offers the option of purchasing individual ride tickets inaddition to various ride all day tickets ranging from 10 - 23depending on your height and which portions of the park(s)you would like to access. Signs are conveniently located atevery entrance to the park displaying the complete layout ofthe park so that you can locate your favorite rides and quicklyplan your day.As you stroll through the park you immediately appreciatethe mixture of old rides and new rides, games, food booths, and entertainment. The park offers something for all agesranging from kiddie land to adult thrill rides. For many it is anopportunity to take your children and grandchildren on ridesthat you rode as a child and share many happy memories ofyears gone by. The sky ride provides a great perspective ofthe park from above. The newest addition to the park is the Mega Vortex whichis a spinning ride similar to Kennywood’s Cosmic Chaos. Byfar, the biggest attraction to most ACE members was RavineFlyer II. This award winning (Golden Ticket’s Best New Rideof 2008) coaster opened at the park in 2008.ACEwesternPA.orgAlthough it has a steel frame, the track definitely providesriders with the thrill of a wooden coaster. With close to 3,000feet of track, the coaster gives riders an awesome long ride. The impressive 60 degree drop at the beginning of the ridecatapults riders through a tunnel and across a covered bridgethat spans over the highway while giving great hang time. The coaster has many turns including a 90 degree bank. Asyou travel through the wooded ravine on the very smoothtrack you do get a sense that you are flying. The ride couldnot have been named more appropriately.Throughout the day, we were greeted by many parkemployees and members of the general public of all ages asthey read our shirts and name badges. Many inquired aboutwhat we thought about their park and what our impressionwas of Ravine Flyer II. They were all very proud of their parkand thrilled to learn that they had one of the most impressivecoasters in the country that would attract coaster enthusiastfrom all over.Later in the afternoon, the group returned to the WestLakeview Picnic Shelter and shared in a wonderful meal.As evening approached, it began to rain. However, thatdid not stop the dedicated roller coaster riders from RavineFlyer II. Some reported they felt the rain made the coasterfly faster. As the day reached an end, the park was closed tothe public and members of the group were treated to an hourof ERT on Ravine Flyer II.As you headed home from Waldameer Park that nightyou could help to reflect on a day of excitement, thrills, andrelaxation. The park offers something for everyone andprovides a safe environment where families can enjoy the dayand everyone can enjoy the rides and entertainment whetheryou are a thrill seeker or a parent/grandparent watching achild take their first ride on a roller coaster or merry-goround. What better way to spend the day. I’m already lookingforward to Coaster Con XXXIII next year, which will includeWaldameer Park!DelGrosso's AmusementPark launches new rideAs the saying goes "There is no such thing as a freel(a)unch". However you apparently can purchase a slightlyused model for a good price.DelGrosso's Amusement Park in Tipton Pennsylvaniaunveiled their newest ride on August 11th. The new ride isan ARM Industries drop tower, which is one of four ridespurchased from Cyprus Gardens. The new ride named XScream shoots riders 140 feet up in the air and drops themstraight back down.X Scream joins three other new rides that DelGrosso'sopened earlier this season, Pharoah's Fury, Dizzy Dragonsand a Yo-Yo.(as reported by WTAJ-TV Altoona, Pennsylvania)Page 5
