Placement Test PreparationPlacement testing is required for all new students at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C). If English is notyour first language, you must take the English as a Second Language (ESL) Placement Test. It is veryimportant to prepare for the placement test. If you prepare carefully and do your best on the test, you may savetime and money by taking fewer classes.The ESL placement test has two parts. One part of the placement test is an English grammar test. You take thistest on a computer in a Tri-C Testing Center. After you finish the grammar test, you will take a writing test onpaper.You must prepare for the ESL Placement Test.Prepare for the TestBefore the TestStart the Night BeforeGet a lot of rest and eat well. This will help you focus during the test.Be PreparedCarefully work through this review guide. You will learn about test, and you will answersample questions.When you come to take the test, remember to bring photo identification, your Tri-C student number, andyour glasses, if you need them.Allow Enough TimeYou have 40 minutes to answer 60 questions on the grammar part of the ESL test. Then you will writefor 15 or 20 minutes. Give yourself enough time to complete both tests.FocusDo not worry about the test results. Just focus on doing your best work on the placement test.2

During the TestRead CarefullyBe sure you understand the directions for each test, and be sure to ask questions if you do not understand.Read each sentence or question carefully. Make sure you understand what the question is asking. If thereare several parts to the question, be sure you answer all of them.If you have a problem or question during the test, ask one of the people who helps students take testsfor help. They cannot answer specific test questions, but they can help you with other types ofproblems.Answering Multiple Choice QuestionsRead the question or statement carefully. Think of an answer before you look at the answers on the test.This way, the choices on the test will not confuse you.Read all the answer choices. Decide what answers you know are not correct. Then choose the best correctanswer.On the placement test, it is important to answer every question. If you are not sure which answer iscorrect, you should make a guess. Choose an answer, but do not keep changing your answer. Usually yourfirst choice is the best one.The Parts of the ESL TestThe ESL Placement Test has two parts: 1) Grammar and 2) Writing1)Grammar: This test is on a computer at a Tri-C Testing Center. The time limit is 40 minutes.2)Writing: You write about a picture or topic on paper. The time limit is 15 or 20 minutesAfter the TestAfter you finish both parts of the ESL placement test, you will receive a copy of your grammar score. Next,you will meet with an ESL evaluator for an interview. Your test results help you and the evaluator understandyour current level of English skills. After the ESL evaluator gives you your ESL placement, you can register forESL classes.If the evaluator decides that you do not need ESL classes, you will go back to the Assessment Center for moretesting and evaluation in order to place you in Tri-C classes.3

The ESL Grammar TestThe ESL Grammar Test is on the computer.The first screen you will see in the test is The College Board Student Privacy Policy Statement. Youmust click Accept to continue testing.4

Next, you will complete two screens of Student Information. Fill out all fields (boxes) marked with ared star like this *.For Country, choose United States, the country where you are taking the ESL test.5

Terms and Conditions, Screen 5Read this. Click on “I have read and agree to the above terms and conditions.” Then click on Accept.The test begins on the next screen.You have 40 minutes for this test. Try to finish all 60 questions, but do not worry if you do not finish thetest.After you finish the test, you will see your grammar Score Report. When you see the Score Report, tell one ofthe people in the Testing Center.7

After the TestAfter you finish both parts of the ESL placement test, you will receive a copy of your grammar score. Your testscores help you and the ESL evaluator understand your current level of English skills.Next, you will contact the ESL evaluator for an ESL Oral Interview appointment. At the time of the interview,the evaluator gives you your placement level and tells you what classes you can take. You can register for theESL classes for your level.If the evaluator decides that you do not need ESL classes, you will go back to the Assessment Center forfurther testing in order to place you in Tri-C classes.Where to Take the Placement TestsWhen you finish the Placement Test Preparation, you can take the placement tests at any of the Tri-C TestingCenters.
