HYDROGEN GAS IS EXPLOSIVE.If the; hot water system has not beenused for such a period, before using awashing machine, turn on all hot waterfaucets and let the water flow from eachfor several minutes. This will release anyaccumulated hydrogen gas. As the gas isflammable, do not smoke or use an openflame during this time. Do not allow children to play on or in thewasher. Close supervision of children isnecessary when the washer is used nearchildren. Before the washer is removed fromservice or discarded, remove the lid. Do not reach into the washer if the tubor agitator is moving. Do not install or store this washer whereit will be exposed to the weather. Do not tamper with controls. B. REMOVESHIPPINGSTRAPRemoving the shipping strap isnecessary for smooth operation.If the shipping strap is notremoved, the washer will makeexcessive noise.STEP 3. Pull firmly to removeend of the shipping strap thatpinned to the back of washer.release the rear self-levelingtheremainsThis willlegs.To prevent floor damage, set washer ontocardboard before moving across floor.Move washer close to its final location.STEP 1. Read, then remove the labelover the electrical plug and shipping strap.STEP 2. Pull the yellow shipping strapcompletely out of the washer. Thereshould be three cotter pins on the endof the shipping strap when it is pulledout of the washer. ]he electrical plug isattached to this shipping strap.PinPULLSTEP 4. Cut the shipping strap about16 inches from plug end. Look for thewords "CUT HERE" Remove shippingstrap from the electricalplug.Electrical plug0ShippingstrapPinNOTE: For use in securing the drainhose, save the end of the shipping strapthat does not have the three cotter pins.Discard the rest.13

C. CONNECTDRAINHOSEmProper connection of the drain hosewill protect your floors from damagedue to water leakage.TWISTANDPUSHSTEP 1. To prevent the drain hose fromcoming off or leaking, it must be installedper the following instructions:IMPORTANT: This procedure must befollowed to ensure proper installation.a. Wet the inside of the straight end ofthe drain hose with tap water. DONOT USE ANY OTHER LUBRICANT.b. Squeeze ears ofclamp with pliersover the straight1/4inch from thesilver, double-wireto open. Place clampend of the drain hoseend.d. Place clamp over area marked"CLAMP." Release clamp.1/4"DrainHose\\c. Open clamp. Twist hose back andforth while pushing down onto drainconnector at the bottom of the washer.Continue until hose contacts theribbed stop on the cabinet.If you have:You will need to buy:Drain hose that is too shortDrain hose, Part No. 388423 andhose kit, Part No. 285442Drain hose that is too longHose kit, Part No. 285442A problem with lint cloggingyour drainDrain protector,Part No. 367031Parts listed are available from your local Sears store or Sears Service Center.Call 1-800-366-PART(1-800-366-7278).14

For standpipesystems:or laundry tub drainSTEP 2. Open yellow, single-wire clampwith pliers and slide over hooked endof drain hose to secure the rubber andcorrugatedsections together.HookedEndD. CONNECT INLET HOSESTO WASHERProper connection of your inlet hoseswill allow hot and cold water to enteryour washer properly. It also helpsprevent water damage due to leaks.Drain HoseSlip and Fall HazardUse new water inlet hoses.STEP 3. Put hooked end of drain hoseinto laundry tub or standpipe. Checkfor proper length of drain hose. Rotatehook to eliminate kinks.To prevent drain water from going backinto the washer: Do not straighten hooked end of drainhose and force excess drain hose intostandpipe. Do not lay excess drain hose in bottomof laundry tub.1Failure to do so can result in headinjury or broken bones.NOTE: Replace inlet hoses after fiveyears of use to reduce the risk of hosefailure. Periodically inspect and replaceinlet hoses if bulges, kinks, cuts, wear,or leaks are found. When replacingyour inlet hoses, mark the date ofreplacement on the label with apermanent marker.STEP 1. Insert one new, flat washer(from the parts bag) into each end ofthe inlet hoses. Check that washersare firmly seated in couplings.0COUPLINGWASHER15

STI-P 2. Attach the hose with the redcoupling to the hot water (bottom) inletvalve. Attaching the red coupling firstmakes it easier to tighten connectionwith pliers. Screw on coupling by hand.Make an additional two-thirds turn withpliers to tighten coupling. DO NOTOVI--RTIGHTEN; this could damagethe valves.ColdWaterInlet ValveE. CONNECTTO WATERINLET HOSESFAUCETSSTEP 1. Make sure washer basket isempty. Run water through both faucetsinto a bucket or laundry tub to get rid ofparticles in the water lines that mightclog hoses. Determine which faucet ishot and which is cold. Mark the hot waterfaucet.HotWaterInletValveSTEP 3. Attach the hose with the bluecoupling to the cold water (top) inletvalve. Screw on coupling by hand. Makean additional two-thirds turn with pliersto tighten coupling. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN; this could damage valves.STEP 2. Attach the hose with the redcoupling to the hot water faucet. Screwon coupling by hand. Make an additionaltwo-thirds turn with pliers to tighten coupling. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN;thiscould damage the coupling.STEP 3. Attach the hose with the bluecoupling to the cold water faucet.Screw on coupling to faucet by hand.Make an additional two-thirds turn withpliers to tighten coupling. DO NOTOVERTIGHTEN;this could damagethe coupling.STEP 4. Turn on water faucets andcheck for leaks. A small amount ofwater may enter the washer. SECUREDRAINHOSESecuring the drain hose properly willprotect your floors from damage dueto water leakage.STEP 1. Move washer to its finallocation.-4If the water faucets and drain standpipeare recessed, put hooked end of drainhose in standpipe. Tightly wrap theshipping strap around the drain hoseand water inlet hoses (not the handlesor stems). Push fastener into thenearest hole in the shipping strapI1iJSTEP 2. Use the shipping strap you cutand removed (without the three cotterpins) and tightly wrap it around the drainhose and laundry tub or standpipe. Pushfastener into the nearest hole in theshipping strap.iiFastener17I.

G. LEVEL WASHERLeveling your washer properly prevents excessive noise and vibration.To install front legs:STI-P 1. Prop front of4 iP,ches). Use a woodobject that will supportwasher. Lowerwasher and reset self-adjustingrear legs(as in Step 6). Repeat Step 7 until thewasher is level.STEP 8. When washer is in its finallocation and level, use a 9/18-inch openend wrench to turn nuts on front legstightly against washer cabinet. If nuts arenot tight against washer cabinet, thewasher may vibrate.STEP 4. Tilt washer backward untilfront of washer is off the wood block.Remove wood block. Gently lowerwasher to floor.18

STARTING WASHERTo get the maximum cleaning andfabric care from your washer, pleaseread and follow these instructions.NOTE: The drawings in this sectionshow the basic features of all modelscovered by this manual. Refer to thesu#plied "Feature Sheet" for yourwasher's particular features.STEP 1. Add measured detergentdirectly into washer basket Then placea load of sorted clothes in the washer.STEP 2. (OPTIONAL STEP) If desired,add measured liquid chlorine bleach tothe liquid bleach dispenser (if available);(see page 25).STEP 3. Push the Cycle Selector Control(Timer) Knoband turn to the right. Setcycle and time according to the type offabric in the load (see page 22).STEP 9. Pull the Cycle Selector Con
