Asyour President I feel responsible if any member were to get sick because of my decision. This week has not sold me on getting together for meetings just yet. My brother passedaway on Sunday because of Covid and my son was just admitted to the hospital for thesame virus, so my view is slanted on the side of caution. This is not over yet, so please becareful. But more than half of the members have requested that we begin, so our April 2021meeting will take place at the Troy Community Center. Our March meeting was a success with a treasure trove of Associates joining in onour LSA meeting. Jennifer Truhn represented Anixter with some classes that will be available on their website. Dave Klein was there from Securitech with somenew products to bring to our attention, and Jon Hohauser from Total Security Solutions showed us some bullet-resistant material that might givethe locksmith another solution for our customers that need extra protection. Juan Collado from UHS-Hardware introduced himself to the membership and would be happy to support LSA with samples and information when needed. The meeting wrapped up with Wayne Winton giving an imprisoning-video of the KwiksetSmart-Key. All in all, it was a great Zoom meeting. Thank You to all that attended. Remember this is your Association! Be a part of it! The Locksmith Security Association of MichiganP AGE 4Industry LossThe Locksmith Industry Loses an IconLongtime locksmith magazine editor, Gale Johnson, lived a life of vision-from "The Locksmith Ledger", March, 2021by Steve Lasky, Mar 23, 2021I’ve never found much solace in the phrase “he will be missed.” Somehow, it seems trite and dismissive when summarizing the passing of a person with whom we’ve shared space and time. For me, andmany others who crossed paths with or worked with Gale Johnson, a simple colloquialism just won’tdo. The man who defined an industry that once advertised for its locksmiths on the back pages ofPopular Mechanics magazine post World War II to entice returning vets into the profession to today’sdigital technology world of “touchless” and mobile devices, Gale bridged the generations of those whoplied his craft.Working alongside Gale for close to three decades on Locksmith Ledger International magazine, Icontinuously was struck by the genuine happiness he exuded in almost every task he undertook. Heseemed to possess that rarest of human gifts ofthose who understand that happiness can’t be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Galeappreciated what he had and was thankful for thelittle things in life that mean a lot. Whether it washosting his rollicking technology road shows onbehalf of Locksmith Ledger with hundreds of adoring locksmith readers around the country or sharing his sassy barbs with security vendors at tradeshows as he critiqued their products and alwaysoffered a more workable solution, he was content.Sweat equity was part of his happiness quotient, aquality of the “greatest generation” seldom spoke ofbut continually exhibited. Building his own home in the northern Chicago suburbs, playing and then officiating amateur hockey to well into his late 70s andmentoring his special-needs son all were a part of the DNA that defined his joy and earmarked priorities of family. In December 2020, Gale retired after 32 years as the Editor-in-Chief of Locksmith Ledger, doing what he always did, putting his priorities in order to fight the cancer he had battled in silence and without fanfare. Today, however, Gale Johnson, our friend and colleague, quietly leftthis earth, dying in the home he built surrounded by the family he loved. He was 84.Johnson's Lock, now run by Gale Johnson's sonsIn the business press, having an actual practitioner steering the media to a niche audience is abonus few magazines enjoy. But as we mentioned when he retired, Gale’s locksmith lineage waslegit. His family is a fixture in the locksmith community in the Chicago area, establishing theoriginal Evanston Lock Shop as a one-person operation located in a garage behind an old Marshall Field building almost 100 yearsago in 1927. During the past 75 years, four Johnson generations have concentrated on meeting the security demands of NorthShore residents and businesses. Gale left the family business in the hands of his wife, Muriel, and his sons when he went to workfor various lock manufacturers through the mid-1970s into the ’80s. However, his life and the fabric of the locksmith industry waschanged in 1987 when the publisher of the Locksmith Ledger requested an article on key machines from Gale. A year later he wasnamed editor of the magazine and held that position until 2020. As Gale said: “I never expected the result to become a thirty-yearodyssey.”

The Locksmith Security Association of MichiganP AGE 5Industry Loss (con’t.)Gale shared the joy of 30 years in the industry with me when he announced his retirement to the staff, saying, “There is no adequate way to detail all the great experiences gained throughout these three decades. I have had the opportunity to representLocksmith Ledger in Ireland, Norway, Italy and Hawaii with dozens of points in between. I have attended every ALOA convention and SHDA convention since 1988 except one. Frequent visits to local locksmith association conventions and LedgerWorldsprovided many chances to tell the Locksmith Ledger story. Every moment was enjoyable. People made the difference. Whether itwas individual locksmiths in small towns or important manufacturers around the world, they all have a common interest. Inever met a person in this business who did not have something worthwhile to share with me.”Those whom he embraced in business lovingly regarded him as the “Bill Nye, theScience Guy” of the locksmith industry. “Gale was such a gentleman,” says Securitech Group President and Chief Product Officer Mark Berger. “I valued each andevery conversation with him for his clarity, knowledge and courtesy. I rememberhim walking the aisle at a trade show, and I’d patiently wait my turn for him tocome by. He wrote the book on old school. Gale was always encouraging, but direct and honest.”Gale’s old friend, Clyde Roberson, the director of product management and fieldservices at Medeco Security Locks added that, to him, Gale’s career in the locksmith field was nothing short of amazing.“His influence on this Industry has spanned many years and numerous changes,”Roberson says. “From starting out in and then taking over his father’s lockshopjust north of Chicago, to developing tools, books and software for the locksmithtrade, to working and consulting for manufacturers like ABLOY, Fort Lock,Framon and many others, to inventing both patents and essential tools way aheadof their time, to finally landing at the Locksmith Ledger to guide the magazine andindustry, with his insight and wisdom for our craft, Gale’s career has had a positiveimpact like few others. He will always be an inspiration, a friend and colleaguewith an immense knowledge, dedication, creativity and understanding of this vocation that have made us all wiser, kinder, smarter and just plain better.”Gale Johnson and former technical editor Jerry Levine on the road at ALOALocksmith industry veterans, such as Buzz Bayliss, encountered Gale mostly at themyriad locksmith events he attended or participated in as a guest speaker. But itwas through the magazine that Bayliss and others marveled at the editor’s depth ofknowledge and understanding of trending technology that eventually would shapethe industry before most vendors caught on.“What separated Gale from most was that he had and was living the life so similar to his core subscriber base, ” Bayliss recalls.“He was a lockshop owner. His editorials often reflected his local solution to a situation that was common across the country. Weeach shared the theme that the local lock shop needed to learn to market itself to its community. Our conversations were oftenabout what each thought was the topic of the moment as we stood in a pipe and drape aisle sharing thoughts. Often his thoughtwould trigger another topic in my mind. We looked at the industry from very different viewpoints, yet he was always ready tolearn a new detail. He was a person that I looked forward to 'bumping into,' as the conversation was lively, we were both engagedand I always learned from each of them.”Marissa Mayer, the former president and CEO of Yahoo once was quoted as saying that you can't have everything you want, butyou can have the things that really matter to you. There couldn’t be a more appropriate epitaph for Gale Johnson than this.

P AGE 8The Locksmith Security Association of Michigan“Tyler Talks”—Tyler Thomas, CJIL, CMKA, CRL-an LSA Member (Georgia)“Assembly Line Locksmithing”In 1913, Henry Ford installed his firstmoving assembly line to assist with massproduction of his vehicles. This assemblyline, which broke down assembly into sequential parts, allowed his company to produce a car every 33 minutes instead of the 12hours it previously took. We incorporate a lot“assembly line” work at our company. We’reodd birds, I’ll admit, in that we really onlytouch master key systems. That said, ifyou’re ever in a position to cut 250 keys or rekey 150 cylinders/cores, which almost every locksmith will encounter, consider our assembly line approach.First, no matter what the order is, once it hits a high enough quantity, maybe 10 or 20,each step in the process is handled step-by-step in a sequential order. For example, cutting keys.Step 1 is grabbing all necessary blanks, step 2 is stamping, step 3 is cutting, step 4 is brushing, and step 5 is packing/shipping. For cores and cylinders, it is much of the same. If we’re pinning150 small format interchangeable cores, we will cut the keys first using the previous process. When it comes to the cores it’s marking the cores (keyset, etc.) for step 1, step 2 is pinning, step3 is capping, step 4 is lubricating, step 5 is testing, and step 6 is either preparing for installing orshipping. No matter the case, each key and/or core is tackled entirely sequential –whether itsstamping or capping or lubricating. The reason? Much like Henry Ford figured out, if you’re set up to handle one process at atime you can run through it quicker than if you migrated back and forth from step to step tostep. First, you’re able to get into a “rhythm”. No matter what you’re doing, once you get goingyou can really roll through the process. Second, you avoid swapping back and forth betweentools/processes. Think of how inefficient things would be if you’re pinning and then cappingand then testing and then going back to start all over that 150 some odd times. No Bueno.Granted, this may seem pretty intuitive, butthe best solutions are often the most simple and basic. The next time you have a large project involving keys, cores, and/or cylinders, consider the assembly line approach.
