Metric System The basic unit of length in the metric system in themeter and is represented by a lowercase m. Mass refers to the amount of matter in an object. The base unit of mass in the metric system is thegram and is represented by g. Volume is the amount of space an object takes up.The base unit of volume in the metric system in the literand is represented by L or l.

LESSON 1:LENGTH

Length - English vs. Metric UnitsWhich is longer?A. 1 mile or 1 kilometerB. 1 yard or 1 meter1 mile1.6 kilometersC. 1 inch or 1 centimeter1 inch 2.54 centimeters1 yard 0.9444 meters

Metric UnitsThe basic unit of length in the metric systemin the meter and is represented by alowercase m.Metric Units1 Kilometer (km) 1000 meters1 Meter 100 Centimeters (cm)1 Meter 1000 Millimeters (mm)Which is larger?A. 1 meter or 105 centimetersC. 12 centimeters or 102 millimetersB. 4 kilometers or 4400 metersD. 1200 millimeters or 1 meter

Measuring LengthHow many millimeters are in 1 centimeter?1 centimeter 10 millimetersWhat is the length of the line in centimeters? cmWhat is the length of the line in millimeters? mmWhat is the length of the line to the nearest centimeter? cmHINT: Round to the nearest centimeter – no decimals.

LESSON 2:MASS

Mass - English vs. Metric UnitsWhich is larger?1. 1 Pound or 100 Grams1 pound 453.6 grams2. 1 Kilogram or 1 Pound3. 1 Ounce or 1000 Milligrams1 ounce of gold 28,349.5 milligrams100 kilogram 220 pounds

Metric UnitsMass refers to the amount of matter inan object. The base unit of mass in the metricsystem is the gram and is representedby g.Kilogram PrototypeMetric Units1 Kilogram (km) 1000 Grams (g)1 Gram (g) 1000 Milligrams (mg)Which is larger?A. 1 kilogram or 1500 gramsC. 12 milligrams or 12 kilogramsB. 1200 milligrams or 1 gramD. 4 kilograms or 4500 grams

Measuring MassWe will be using triple-beam balancesto find the mass of various objects. The objects are placed on the scale andthen you move the weights on the beamsuntil you get the lines on the right-side ofthe scale to match up.Once you have balanced the scale, you add upthe amounts on each beam to find the total mass. What would be the mass of the object measuredin the picture? g

Measuring Mass – Triple-Beam Balance1st – Place the film canister on the scale.2nd – Slide the large weight to the right until the arm drops below theline. Move the rider back one groove. Make sure it “locks” into place.3rd – Repeat this process with the top weight. Whenthe arm moves below the line, back it up one groove.4th – Slide the smallweight on the frontbeam until the linesmatch up.5th – Add the amounts on each beam to find the total mass to the nearest tenth of agram.

LESSON 3:VOLUME

Volume - English vs. Metric UnitsWhich is larger?1 fl oz 29.573 mlA. 1 liter or 1 gallon1 12-oz can of sodawould equalapproximately 355 ml.B. 1 liter or 1 quartC. 1 milliliter or 1 fluid ounce1 quart 0.946 liters1 gallon 3.79 litersIt would take approximately 3 ¾1-liter bottles to equal a gallon.

Metric UnitsVolume is the amount of space anobject takes up.The base unit of volume in themetric system in the liter and isrepresented by L or l.Metric Units1 liter (L) 1000 milliliters (mL)1 milliliter (mL) 1 cm3 (or cc) 1 gram*Which is larger?A. 1 liter or 1500 millilitersB. 200 milliliters or 1.2 litersC. 12 cm3 or 1.2 milliliters*

Measuring VolumeWe will be using graduated cylinders tofind the volume of liquids and other objects.Read the measurement based on the bottom of themeniscus or curve. When using a real cylinder, makesure you are eye-level with the level of the water. What is the volume of water in the cylinder? mLWhat causes the meniscus?A concave meniscus occurs when the molecules of the liquidattract those of the container. The glass attracts the water onthe sides.

What is the volume of water in each cylinder?Pay attention to the scales for each cylinder.Images created at downloads/SWF/measuring cylinder.swfMeasuring Liquid Volume

Measuring Solid Volume9 cmWe can measure the volume of regular objectusing the formula length x width x height.8 cmX X We can measure the volume ofirregular object using water displacement.Amount of H2O with object About of H2O without object Difference Volume http://resources.edb.gov.hk/ s1sci/R tm10 cm

THE METRIC SYSTEM The metric system is much easier. All metric units are related by factors of 10. Nearly the entire world (95%), except the United States, now uses the metric system. Metric is used exclusively in science

of tank wall, which would be required by each design method for this example tank. The API 650 method is a working stress method, so the coefficient shown in the figure includes a factor of 2.0 for the purposes of comparing it with the NZSEE ultimate limit state approach. For this example, the 1986 NZSEE method gave a significantly larger impulsive mode seismic coefficient and wall thickness .
