THE UNIVERSITYwas installed in the stadium. During 2008–2009 Concordia addedthe Walz Human Performance Center, a facility that will have apositive impact on thousands of students, faculty and otherconstituents every year for generations to come.HISTORYConcordia University opened its doors on Nov. 18, 1894, with oneprofessor, a dozen male students and a three-year high schoolcurriculum. Concordia has since grown into a fully accredited,coeducational university which has granted more than 22,000degrees and certificates. Concordia, Nebraska is a memberinstitution of the Concordia University System (CUS) of theLutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS).Seward is an ideal home for Concordia University. The town’s7,219 people welcome students into their community, and manylocal businesses provide jobs for students. The campus is withinwalking distance of downtown shops, eating establishments anda movie theater. St. John Lutheran Church and The RockLutheran Church serve as home churches for many faculty andstudents. St. John Lutheran School and the Seward PublicSchools serve as prime cooperating schools for Concordia’steacher education students. Seward is just six miles fromInterstate 80 and 24 miles west of Lincoln, the state capital andhome of the University of Nebraska’s main campus. A trip toOmaha takes roughly 75 minutes.Concordia Teachers College was the institution’s name from1924 until July 1, 1998, when the institution became ConcordiaUniversity. For much of the time between 1974 and 1998 theinstitution used the name Concordia College, although the namewas not official.STATEMENT OF MISSION AND COMMITMENTSIn August of 2008, Concordia extended its mission by committingto offering graduate, degree completion, and trainingopportunities in Fallbrook, an area of Lincoln located near the I80 and HWY 34 interchange.Concordia University is a coeducational institution of higherlearning committed to the Christian growth of its students.Concordia is an excellent academic and Christ-centeredcommunity equipping men and women for lives of learning,service and leadership in the church and world.ACCREDITATIONConcordia University, Nebraska is accredited by The HigherLearning Commission, a Commission of the North CentralAssociation of Colleges and Schools. The teacher education programs are accredited by theNational Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Themusic programs are accredited by the National Association ofSchools of Music. The music therapy program is approved by theAmerican Music Therapy Association. The Bachelor of Sciencedegrees in business administration, accountancy, businesscommunication, marketing, and management informationsystems and the Bachelor of Arts degree in businessadministration and their minors and concentrations areaccredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate BusinessEducation (IACBE). The baccalaureate degree in nursingprogram at Concordia University Nebraska is accredited by theCommission on Collegiate Nursing Education (One DupontCircle, NW, Suite 530, Washington, DC 20036, 202-887-6791).The majority of Concordia’s programs are approved by theNebraska State Department of Education for veterans and otherpersons eligible for VA benefits.This goal is accomplished through degree programs inprofessional education and the liberal arts. In addition,Concordia’s faculty, staff and students are committed to serviceto the church and community and to scholarly activity andresearch. These programs and activities are set forth in anexplicit value system that has as its core faith in Jesus Christ asthe Son of God and only Savior of the world, commitment to theHoly Scriptures as the communicator of that faith andcommitment to the Lutheran Confessions as a true exposition ofthe Scriptures.Concordia’s programs promote intellectual, emotional, physicaland spiritual growth. They nurture religious commitment, enlargesocial and cultural understanding, provide insights for Christianaction in the world and facilitate the ability to communicateeffectively. The programs provide an opportunity for intelligentselection of vocations for service to God, church and society, andthey are designed to develop the professional competencies andcommitment required for responsible participation and leadershipin a complex and diverse society.SETTINGConcordia’s campus covers nearly 120 acres and features morethan 25 academic and service buildings. Because Concordiadraws the majority of its students from outside Nebraska,residence hall living and student activities play prominent roles inshaping students’ total educational experience. Concordia has11 residence halls, a student center, athletic fields forintercollegiate and intramural sports and an abundance of openspace for informal recreational activities. During the 1999–2000academic year the 65,000 square-foot Thom LeadershipEducation Center was placed into service and was dedicated inthe fall of 2000. The Osten Observatory was added to campus in2002. RECOMMENDED HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMADMISSIONRequirements for admission are graduation or its equivalent with16 units or 160 semester hours. Even though no definite coursesare required, students are encouraged to plan a comprehensivecollege preparatory program in high school which includes thefollowing:STATEMENT OF NON-DISCRIMINATIONAs a matter of policy, Concordia University admits students ofany age, race, color and ethnic origin. Admitted students enjoythe rights, privileges, programs and activities generally offered toall Concordia students. Further, Concordia University does not discriminate according toage, race, color, sex and national and ethnic origin inadministering admissions and educational policies, scholarshipand loan programs, and athletic and other school-administeredprograms. Theuniversity may give preference to applicants in one of thefollowing categories:If the student is in his or her first semester of college and isapplying for the upcoming term, a student’s application may bereviewed after the student submits final high school transcriptsand ACT or SAT scores. In all other cases, applicants transferringfrom another college or university should request a transcriptfrom all colleges or universities previously attended. Thesetranscripts will need to be received before an admission decisionwill be made. If a student has fewer than 24 transferable credits,a high school transcript, General Education Diploma (GED), or astate’s equivalent of a GED, is also required for admissionreview. Applicants normally must have a minimum cumulativecollege grade point average of 2.00. Higher grade point averagesmay be necessary where program admission requirementswarrant it. After matriculation only those grades in course workattempted at Concordia in Seward are used to compute thecumulative grade point average.A. An applicant from any member congregation of TheLutheran Church–Missouri Synod or an applicant who is a childof a person from a synodical congregation orB.
