From the Principal . . .Dear Parents,I am very proud of how hard the majority of our students are working this year. Iam seeing students making great strides in learning the Common Core English LanguageArts/Literacy and Mathematics in grades PreK-12. All of our juniors were able to pass theComprehensive English Regents in January of their junior year. Teachers have workedhard to incorporate the Common Core Learning Standards in all of our classes. Students arereading more non-fiction and challenging material while learning about the world aroundthem. Students are using evidence from their reading in their writing and discussions.English Language Arts/Literacy Read as much non-fiction as fictionLearn about the world by readingRead more challenging materialTalk about reading using “evidence”Write about texts using “evidence”Know more vocabulary wordsStudents are building their mathematical skills with Common Core Math standardspushing them to learn less, but at a much deeper level. Many parents have noticed thatinstead of just teaching algorithms, students are learning the deeper concepts and are ableto explain why an answer is correct or incorrect. Teachers have been incorporating thestandards in grades PreK-6 and have adopted the modules in grades 7-10. Our studentsare becoming more and more confident along withproving their ability on New York State Regentsand local assessments.Mathematics Build skills across grade levelsLearn more about lessUse math facts easilyThink fast AND solve problemsReally know it, really do itUse math in the real worldAll this is to say, I am extremely confident in our students’ performances becausethey have working so hard in all of their classes. Our Honor and High Honor Roll listsare growing while our failure lists have been reduced. Students are focused on doing theirbest with the help of our hard working teachers. Many students stay after for ACCORDAfter-School tutoring, which is available for grades 3-12.As we approach April and we start thinking about NYS tests, please know that yourchild’s academic growth is of high concern to all of us. We work daily to provide the careand support your child needs to be successful. Our students are well prepared for NYStests and they are only one measure of a child’s ability. Students take these assessmentsin stride and our teachers make sure the classroom is as low stress as possible. How can you help? Support our efforts to keep the idea of NYS testing as low key aspossible. Let your child know that they have been preparing all year and that all they needto do is do their best. Parents can go to engageny.org for more ideas on how to supportyour child’s efforts. New York State ELA assessments for Grades 3-8 will be held April14-16. NYS 3-8 Mathematics assessments are scheduled for April 22-24. If you haveany questions, please feel free to contact me. I am excited to see how much our studentshave grown over the last year.Nancy Sampson, PreK-12 PrincipalJanuary/February 2015Pre-Paying onAccountIt is best to prepay onyour cafeteria accountby giving the cashiermoney ahead oftime. This year, gradesK-6 go to the lab for instruction and therehas been plenty to learn. Mr. Smith’s fourthgrade class did research on Puerto Rico, sothey could create their own tri-fold travelbrochures for people to see. Mrs. Weinman’sfourth grade class learned how to set up andtype their own pages for a book about Native Americans. The fifth and sixth gradeshave been busy researching and creatingPowerPoint presentations about our nation’scapital. The sixth graders added a twistas they researched paranormal activity inWashington, D.C. The students had to findfacts proving or debunking their stories.Students in grades 1-3 have been working hard on improving their keyboardingskills and they are also beginning to use difJanuary/February 2015ferent computer applications like MicrosoftWord and Excel. The youngsters have alsoexperimented with changing the size, color, and style of the font they use on screen.Kindergarten students have also been busy, learning to use their keyboards and evenexploring the different applications theymight find on a computer. While a lot has already been accomplished in the computer lab during the firsthalf of the school year, there is definitely alot more to come!We have also been using the elementarycomputer lab for students in grades 7-12 todo: some assessment testing, daily onlinework, extra projects, extra interventions, and extra work. Many times it has been standing roomonly. I am so happy to see our lab get somuch use and be so productive. I am alsovery excited to see what the second half ofthe year will bring to the lab.St. Jude’s Math-A-ThonSt. Jude’s Math-A-Thon is a FREE,education-based program for students ingrades 2-6 at Scio Central School.
