—Thomas & Betts is now ABBInstallation Products, but our longlegacy of quality products andinnovation remains the same. Fromconnectors that help wire buildingson Earth to cable ties that help putmachines in space, we continue towork every day to make, market, design and sell products thatprovide a smarter, safer and morereliable flow of electricity, fromsource to socket.

4C O N N E C T O R S A N D G R O U N D I N G C O M P R E S S I O N C O N N E C TO R S—OverviewThe Thomas & Betts method is betterThe Thomas & Betts method of installing compression connectors on power cablesis designed to provide a high degree of reliability in electrical wiring. This method allows electrical workers to makeinstallations with little effort and at a considerablesavings in time. The benefit, of course, is a highquality connection at a low installed cost. Blackburn Connectors featuring the Color-Keyedsystem are banded by colored stripes or engravingto indicate location of die on connector forcompression. Thomas & Betts uses full-width andhalf-width dies dependent on connector sizeand tool used. Half-width dies are markedwith the letter “H” after the die code number.Refer to the instruction sheet supplied withthe connectors for information regardingstrip length, die selection and number ofcompressions required.—Just four easy steps toa perfect connection!DA—01—01 Strip the insulation—02 Stripping types andconductor connectionsBEC—02Step 1Carefully strip the insulation on de-energized wiresto avoid nicking or cutting conductors (wire brushif required).Strip the insulation to the proper length sothat conductors can be fully inserted intothe connector barrel.Stripping types: A – Strand cut B – Nicked strands C – Good stripConductor connections: D – Strip length too long E – Strip length too short F – Strip length just rightF

Dies have a codenumber engraved in the crimp surface.Step 4Locate tool with correct die in proper position onconnector and activate tool. When making multiplecrimps, make the first crimp nearest the tongueand work towards the barrel end. When properly crimped, the die code number willbe embossed on the connector for easy inspectionto determine if correct die and connectorcombination were used (J).

6C O N N E C T O R S A N D G R O U N D I N G C O M P R E S S I O N C O N N E C TO R S—OverviewPrecision diesThe T&B method utilizing compression tools with matching dies formsthe connector and conductor into a solid, homogenous mass to providean optimum electrical bond between connector and conductor.—01 Locate tool withcorrect die in properposition on connectorand activate tool.—02 Before compression,a typical cross sectionof cable and connectorconsists of about 75%metal and 25% air.—03 After air compressionby the T&B Method, the cross section lookslike this, nearly 100%metal with v irtuallyno air spaces.—01Thomas & Betts method dies are designed toproduce a circumferential, hex- or diamond-shapedcompression rather than a simple indent. Precisiondies are an integral part of the Thomas & Bettsmethod. The precision hardened steel dies exerttremendous, controlled pressure on the connectorand conductor. The dies compress the connectoraround the cable, converting the round strands tohexagonal or diamond shapes and forming thestrands and connector into a solid mass. Eachdie is designed so that all conductors receivethe same amount of compression force. The circumferential compression creates a largearea of high-pressure contact between cableand connector which, in turn, assures highconductivity, low resistance, and high pulloutvalues which exceed UL requirements. Thesefeatures result in a permanent, low installedcost connection. You can install it, and forget it.The Thomas & Betts system tells youwhere to place the installing dieBlackburn connectors featuring the Color-Keyed system not only identify the correct installing dieto be used for positive compressions, but alsoindicate the proper placement of the die on theconnector. This is done by the bands of color onthe connector which match the color on the dies.Compression is made between or on these colorbands. The color name is also spelled on theconnector as an added means of identification.Thomas & Betts dies offer inspection capabilityDies that are used in Thomas & Betts hand andhydraulic tools contain the “die code” numberswhich are engraved on the compression surface ofthe die. Under compression, this number becomesembossed on the completed connection forinspection purposes. The inspector comparesthe die code number embossed on the connectorwith the die table to ensure that the properconnector was compressed with the correctdie for that particular size conductor.—02—03

Portablepower for all T&Bhydraulic heads, usingjust one Ni-MH 24Vrechargeable battery.—TBM62BSCRSingle-handed batterypowered compressiontool, features rotatinghead and comfortablebalance. For connectorsup to 500 kcmil Cu350 kcmil Al.—Quality Tooling withthe Shure-Stake MechanismT&B manual tools with the exclusive Shure-Stakemechanism take the guesswork out of makingcompression connections. The Shure-Stakemechanism provides a full cycle compressionstroke every time. Once the stroke has started, thetool will not release the connector until the properamount of force has been applied. This is yourassurance of a fully compressed connection.T&B compression tools develop uniform, controlledpressure to each connector within their sizerange. Thomas & Betts offers electric and batterypowered hydraulic pumps with a Shure-Stakefeature that guarantees a full cycle compression.Thomas & Betts method componentsmeet industry standardsDepending on the application, all Thomas & Bettscopper connectors meet UL Std. 486A for codestranded and 24 gauge flex, CSA Std. C22.2,No. 65 600 V requirements for power and UL Std.467, CSA Std. 22.2 No. 0.4 requirementsfor direct buried grounding.—TBM6S Hand-operatedcrimping tool featuresShure-Stake mechanismto ensure a completedcrimp. For connectorsup to 500 kcmil Cu,350 kcmil Al.T&B method connectors are available in a range ofsizes and styles to accommodate #8 AWG through1000 kcmil and larger copper or 2000 kcmil andlarger aluminum cable. They may be compressedon cable with either manual or hydraulic tools. Theyare offered with standard length or long barrels, with one bolt or two bolt holes, or in two-waystyles, for splicing applications. Two-way connectorsare compact, providing high pullout values withlow resistance.Blackburn two-hole lugs featuring the Color-Keyedsystem are ideal for bus bar applications thatrequire two bolts to prevent lug rotation. The T&Bmethod is the most efficient, highest qualityconnection that has been engineered and deliversthe best electrical performance and highest reliability.T&B Compression Connectors eliminate risk ofproblems relating to loose connections wheninstalled properly.High-grade materials incorporatedin Thomas & Betts methodLow installed cost connections of superior qualitycan be achieved only through the use of high-gradecomponents. That is an important part of the T&Bmethod – quality products you can depend on.Copper Blackburn connectors featuring theColor-Keyed system are made of high-conductivitywrought copper, and are electro-tin plated to preventcorrosion and to improve conductivity. Thomas &Betts Blackburn connectors featuring the ColorKeyed system offer the thickest tin plating in theindustry. Other copper connectors for heavy-dutyuse and grid grounding applications are made ofhigh-conductivity cast copper, bright finished.High-conductivity cast aluminum connectors areavailable for heavy-duty application.
