Academic AttireAcademic attire is modeledafter monks’ clothing fromthe Middle Ages, when collegefaculty and students weremembers of religious orders. InEngland, the faculty of manycolleges and universities stillwear gowns, hoods and caps inthe classroom. In the early 20th century, colleges and universitiesthroughout the world adoptedguidelines for the design and colors ofacademic attire. An institution maydesign and register special attire forits administrators and graduates, but itmust conform to certain standards. Onceregistered, the design/color combinationmay not be duplicated by otherinstitutions. The bachelor’s gown is most oftenblack and has long sleeves that taper toa point in the back. It is always wornclosed. At Metro State, women do notwear a white collar with the gown. Thehood worn by the President’s Awardrecipient is a Metropolitan State Collegeof Denver bachelor’s degree hood andis worn by this student to represent thegraduating class. The gown signifying the master’s degreeis also usually black and may be worn openor closed. It features oblong sleeves thathang below the wrist, tapering to a squarecut with a cutaway arc.Although usually black, the doctoralgown is sometimes seen in colors—usuallygold, purple, blue or red. The gown may beworn open or closed. The opening ofthe gown is faced with velvet and threevelvet chevrons run across its bell-shapedsleeves. The velvet facing and chevronsmay be black or the color representing thefield of study. The hood varies in length and shapeaccording to the degree it represents—theshortest and smallest signifies the bachelor’sdegree and the longest and widest signifiesthe doctoral degree. The velvet borderingthe hood represents the degree fieldof study. The colors most frequently8seen at Metro State are royalblue – Philosophy; lightblue – Education; yellow –Science; green – Medicine. Thesatin lining of the hood, each aspecific design, represents thecollege or university at whichthe individual earned his or herdegree. The Oxford Cap, ormortarboard as it is better known, completes the attire. In place ofthe hood, bachelor’s candidates at MetroState wear colored tassels on the OxfordCap to represent the academic departmentof the college from which they earned theirdegrees. Those holding graduate degreesusually wear black tassels, but those holdingdoctoral degrees may wear tassels of goldthread, and may elect to wear a four-sided oreight-sided velvet tam instead of the OxfordCap. Some universities have designated theCambridge Cap, a large, soft beret, for theiradministrators and those who have earned adoctoral degree at that institution.Insignias worn by honor graduates and members ofhonor societiesYou will notice that some of our graduatesare wearing one or more cords, stoles ormedallions of various colors or designsabout the neck of their gowns to representhigh academic achievement. Thosegraduates who have achieved overallexcellence are recognized by the collegethrough three areas of distinction:Summa Cum Laude (with highest praise)Gold and blue cordMagna Cum Laude (with great praise)Silver and blue cordCum Laude (with praise)Bronze and blue cordHonors ProgramThe college encourages students to enroll inand complete an especially rigorous courseof interdisciplinary study in addition to theindividual’s major and minor study degreerequirements. This course of study is knownas the Honors Program.
