4O C A L P VC - C O AT E D C O N D U I T S Y S T E M—Ocal manufacturing processOur Ocal PVC-coated conduit system fully complies with all standards for proper use andprotection in corrosive environments mandated by UL6, NEMA RN-1 and ANSI C80.1. It ismanufactured in the United States by ABB in our Jonesboro, TN manufacturing facility. The process of manufacturingPVC-coated conduit The process begins with 20-foot sticks of rawsteel shell. The steel shell is then cut and threaded —before galvanizing. The cut and threaded conduit is then preparedfor the hot-dip galvanizing process. The threaded shell is immersed in a molten zincbath. This hot-dip galvanizing process enablesthe zinc to penetrate the steel, providing thebest possible protection. After the conduit isextracted from the zinc bath, super-heated steamis blown through the interior and over the outsideof the conduit to remove any slag. The ends of the conduit are then heated enoughto blow excess zinc out of the thread cavities.ABB manufactures steel conduit that provideshot-dipped galvanized threads in addition tothe conduit itself. Other methods such as “hotgalvanizing” provide only a “sprayed-on”zinc coating. Prior to the PVC application, the inside diameterof each conduit has 2 mils of blue urethaneapplied to the inside as well as the threads. After priming, the conduit is heated then rolledthrough liquid plastisol; achieving completecoverage of 40 mils in thickness. The process of manufacturingPVC coated fittings Fittings are cleaned and then sprayed on theinside and the outside with 2 mils of blueurethane. This gives the fittings corrosionprotection on the exterior as well as the interior— the fittings are “double-coated.” 40 mils of PVC is then applied to the exteriorof the fitting. Covers are coated with a molded flange andconduit bodies are molded with a flat surfaceto ensure a superior seal.—ABB works hard to providestandards-compliant PVC-coatedconduit. It is this dedication tosuperior quality that makes Ocal“better by design.”

The three standards that address thedesign and performance of PVC-coated rigid steelconduit are ANSI C80.1, UL6 and NEMA RN-1.ANSI C80.1, UL and NEMA have determined theappropriate ASTM standards and test methodsthat apply.Hot-dip galvanized threadsSince electrical conduit systems breathe, the threads will be exposed to the corrosiveenvironment for the duration of the installation.NEMA RN-1-2005 is the electrical industry’sstandard for PVC externally coated galvanized rigidsteel conduit. Section 2.1 of this standard states,“Where unusually corrosive environments areencountered, it is recommended that threads begiven additional protection suitable for theintended application.” Hot-dip galvanizing is theprocess through which the steel shell is dipped inmolten zinc, causing the zinc to penetrate the steel.ABB hot-dip galvanizes the threads of the conduit,in addition to the conduit itself. This gives thethreads the protection recommended incorrosive environments.A compelling demonstration of the protectionhot-dip galvanizing provides is shown at left, using a common corrosive agent, salt, on hot-dipgalvanized threads. UL6, the standard for rigidmetal conduit, references ASTM B117 for evaluatingprotective coatings. At left are the results of asalt-fog test using the standard test methodASTM B117.

6O C A L P VC - C O AT E D C O N D U I T S Y S T E M—Evaluating corrosion protection of PVC-coatedconduit (cont.)Zinc coating surpassesrequirement forcorrosion resistanceWhy is the Preece test relevant to PVCcoated conduit? In cases where the PVC protection is accidentallybreached, resulting from cuts, scrapes, etc., it iscritical to have a second line of defense — a zinc,or galvanized, coating. The zinc coating willsignificantly slow corrosion and allow more timefor repairs. Conduit systems without adequate zincprotection underneath the PVC coating are mostlikely to suffer catastrophic corrosion damage. Thisis why NEMA RN-1 section 3.1.1 requires the properand correct treatment of galvanized conduit beforeit is PVC coated. It states, “The surface shall becleaned in such a manner that the galvanizedsurface of the conduit is not harmed or eroded.”The purpose of the Preece test is to evaluate thezinc coating on galvanized rigid conduit to ensureadequate protection from corrosion per UL6.2.2.The test will also determine if the surface of theconduit has been damaged as a result ofpreparation for PVC coating.Galvanized conduit underneath the PVC coating —Preece testWith so much riding on the integrity of theirelectrical conduit systems, facilities need thesuperior protection offered by the ABB Ocal PVCcoated conduit systems. The simple fact is thatthe Ocal PVC-coated conduit system complies fullywith the design and performance standards forPVC-coated conduit set forth by UL6, NEMA RN-1and ANSI C80.1.ANSI C80.1, UL6 and NEMA RN-1 have determinedthe appropriate ASTM standards and test methodsthat apply, and the Preece test is one test that mustbe passed to be in full compliance. In evaluating the test results, the conduit receivesa passing grade when the sample does not showa bright, adherent deposit of copper after four60-second immersions in the copper sulfatesolution. The conduit showing the bright, firmlyadhering copper has failed to provide adequatezinc protection against corrosion. The Preece test follows procedures set forth byUL6.2.2 and ASTM A239 and is the test recognizedby UL6, NEMA RN-1 and ANSI C80.1 to adequatelyassess zinc protection for rigid steel conduit. The Ocal line of PVC-coated conduit systems, manufactured by ABB, complies with UL6, NEMARN-1 and ANSI C80.1 without exception.

E VA LU AT I N G C O R R O S I O N P R OT E C T I O N A N D A D H E S I O N7—Evaluating adhesion of PVC coating—01 Step 1 consists oftwo cuts through theplastic to the substratealong the length of theconduit at approximately1 2 " apart, three to fourinches in length. A thirdperpendicular cut crossesthe lengthwise cuts.—02 Step 2 calls for theedge of the PVC that wascut on the perpendicularto be carefully liftedto form a plastic tab.—03 In Step 3, the tab ispulled perpendicular tothe conduit with a pairof pliers. The plastic tabwill tear off rather thanhaving any peeling effect,or coating separatingfrom thesubstrate.—04 Step 4 is theevaluation of the test, which in this case, resultsin a passing grade forOcal. This result is moretestimony to the fact thatOcal is “better by design.”—ResultsThe following demonstration shows OcalPVC- coated conduit being subjected tothe adhesion test.1—012—023—03The evaluation process for adhesion of PVC coatingon conduit is governed by NEMA RN-1, section 3.8;Adhesion, which states that, “The adhesion of thePVC coating to the conduit shall be greater than thestrength of the coating itself.” This adhesion test isstraightforward and simple. There are nospecialized conditions necessary to perform thistest. Ocal routinely performs quality control testingthat includes the adhesion test, on conduit as itrolls off the line. Conduit that passes this testdemonstrates that the adhesion will provide yearsof trouble-free service.4—04With Ocal PVC-coated conduit and fittings, you getcorrosion protection that will extend the life of yourelectrical raceway systems for years and years.
