Microcontrollersand ChipsPropeller Multicore Chip Where is the Propeller used?Do you remember when programming wasactually fun? With eight 32-bit processorsin one chip, integrating peripheral devicesis suddenly simplified. The Propeller chipgives programmers both the power of truemulti-processing and deterministic controlover the entire system. The Propeller is used in many industriesincluding manufacturing, process control, robotics, automotive and communications.Hobbyists and engineers alike are findingnew uses for this powerful microcontrollerevery day. When might you choose to usethe Propeller instead of anotherproduct? The Propeller is a good choice over othermicrocontrollers when a low system partcount is desirable due to its ability to providedirect video output and an easy interfaceto external peripherals such as keyboard, mouse and VGA monitor. Pre-written objectsto support many types of hardware alsomake it an attractive option. All of thisplus low cost and a powerful, yet easylanguage are hard to beat in a world wheremicrocontrollers come in so many flavorsthat it’s hard to make a choice. The Propellerreally is an easy choice. Each of the Propeller chip’s processors, called cogs, can operate simultaneously, both independently and cooperativelywith other cogs, sharing access to globalmemory and the system clock in a roundrobin fashion through a central hub. Eachcog has access to all 32 I/O pins, with pinstates being tracked in its own input, outputand direction registers. Each cog alsohas its own memory, 2 counter modules, and a video generator module capable ofproducing NTSC, PAL & VGA signals. There are two native languages, objectbased Spin and low-level assembly, andthird-party C compilers as well. Exampleobjects, such as keyboard, mouse, andgraphics drivers, come standard with thefree Propeller Tool software. Many others, including C objects, are available throughthe Propeller Object Exchange. With theright objects, using the Propeller is a matterof high-level integration. Why should you use the Propeller? The Propeller Chip can free system designersfrom the constraints of many modernmicrocontroller systems in both hardwareand software. The Propeller puts the funback into design and programming whileproviding the power and flexibility required intoday’s microcontroller-powered applications.A Parallax creation from the silicon on up,the Propeller chip’s unique architecture andlanguages will change the way you thinkabout embedded system design. Simplify! The Propeller Chip retails at 7.99(quantity 1). For Propeller quantitypricing see page 4.2

Reasons to use the Propeller in your product design“I’ve built my company around the Propeller chip and find it extremely easy to use and flexible enough to tackle some of the biggest problems we’ve had. Every one of our productshas at least one Propeller chip in it! In a product that costs as much as ours ( 1,495), the 6price per unit is nothing, especially considering the flexibility and code base we base it on,that cost savings alone easily makes up for the unit price difference. We sold 250 units ofWingman at the Oshkosh show and have commitments for 100 per month ongoing.”- William J. Steele, Wingman airplane display developer (see page 8)ules can be packaged up in tidy, interactivemodules. An organized relationship betweenthe Propeller hardware makes it easy to add, modify or remove code objects – objects canrun concurrently in their own cogs. Singlethreaded architecture is a thing of the past.Parallax designed the Propeller for productinventors, entrepreneurs, hobbyists andstudents alike. In a market where microcontrollers are handed to you with a menu ofoptions and configurations, it’s sensible thatthe commercial product designers wouldask if the one-size-fits-all Propeller is an appropriate choice for their products.Support and Stability - Parallax’s 20 year business record includes consistentgrowth and stability. Like our other products, the Propeller is just beginning a many-decade production run. The support offered byParallax is tremendous, whether via forums, telephone, e-mail or in-person by our FieldApplication Engineers. We’ll work with you,on your terms, to help bring your product toproduction. And you’ll never receive an “Endof Life” notice on this multi-core processor.Flexibility - The Propeller has eight coresand these can be used any way you desire. The Propeller shows this flexibility for adiverse assortment of products like instrumentation, autopilots and robotics, machinery control and renewable energy. Theseproducts often have a need for a display, user interface, communication in additionto measurement, control and computationtasks. All of these abilities are nicely partitioned in a Propeller. The requirements ofthese products vary significantly, so a singlepurpose microcontroller with a pre-definedset of peripherals won’t provide the productexpansion capabilities.Manufacturing Support - Parallax HongKong manages our own Chinese manufacturing facility. We can manufacture your Propeller product. Contact us for information aboutthis possibility.Code Library and Architecture - TheParallax Propeller Object Exchange (http://obex.parallax.com) provides source codeobjects you can use in your product designs. The Propeller’s multi-core design and objectbased programming means your code mod-Price - Low volumes are available in the 6range with higher volumes (25 K) being available for even less. External component countcan also be reduced by using a Propeller.Driving VGA and composite displays are oneexample.5Microcontrollersand ChipsAdvantages of Using the Propeller -

Microcontrollersand ChipsPropeller-controlled Commercial ProductWingman: A Portable EFIS by William J. Steeleof VirtualHUD“For the last several years, I’ve been designing avionics for aircraft as a hobby. I foundthe Propeller about 3 years ago and haven’tlooked back since. I developed the Wingman,a portable EFIS, or Electronic Flight Information System. An EFIS is basically a digital version of the instrument panel in any aircraft.Modern versions actually give the pilot a lotmore useful information than the traditionalsix-pack instruments in older aircraft. TheWingman is designed to give pilots of “lessequipped” aircraft that same information. This is the first and only unit on the marketthat is completely portable. The prototypehas one of Rayman’s 4.3 inch Touch screendisplays and runs on a single Propeller chip, with 64 K EEPROM and an internal 2 GB SDcard. It also has a Lithium-ion battery packto allow it to run for well over an hour onbattery power alone (our testing has shownover two hours depending on the configuration and screen brightness). All of its sensorsare built in, including 3 axis accelerometers,3 axis gyros and a 3-axis compass. It hasa 20 channel GPS, but may also connectto an external GPS for additional waypointand route information. The Wingman usesa bunch of software from the OBEX (http://obex.parallax.com), plus about 10 years ofmy own software development converted toPASM and a little bit of Spin. The hardware is wrapped in a padded foamedging to trim it out and fit into a custom-designed acrylic case. The unit is 4.75 x 3.25 x0.875 inches and weighs about 7 ounces.I have to say, the further and further I diginto the Propeller, the more I love it. The Object Exchange (OBEX) is wonderful for gettinga collective understanding of how everythingworks. We took a lot of the ideas (and code)and blended them into our software. Mosthad to be rewritten to fit our particular needs(and space, because we only have 512 longsin each cog). The really cool part is that westill have free space available for additionalprocessing and we’re only using 7 cogs rightnow. That’s gives us some breathing roomfrom some future enhancements! The Wingman is the lowest priced backup Attitude Indicator that I am aware of. and it’sthe only portable one.”The Wingman is designed to work in conjunction with a handheld aviation GPS to providea “complete picture” of what the airplaneis doing and where it is located, as well as“highway in the sky” symbology to guide thepilot to their destination. The Wingman EFIS retails for 1,495.For more info: www.VirtualHUD.com8
