Any person having questionsabout the interpretation of NFHS wrestling rulesshould contact the wrestling rules interpreterdesignated by his or her state high schoolassociation.The NFHS is the sole and exclusive source ofmodel interpretations of NFHS wrestling rules. Staterules interpreters may contact the NFHS for modelwrestling rules interpretations. If sufficient reason is determined by thereferee, a tight-fitting, short-sleeved or sleeveless undershirt ofa single, solid color unadorned with no more than onemanufacturer’s logo/trademark/reference may be worn underthe one-piece singlet (PlayPic B). REFEREE ENTERPISES INC. 2012RULE CHANGERULE CHANGEACWhen an imminent or near-fall situation is stopped due to adefensive wrestler committing a technical violation, applying anillegal hold/maneuver, committing unnecessary roughness orunsportsmanlike act which cannot be corrected and requiresthe referee to stop the match (PlayPic A), the match is stopped.The referee then awards the near-fall points (PlayPic B) andthe penalty points (PlayPic C). REFEREE ENTERPISES INC. 2012PlayPic PlayPic APlayPic BPlayPic CIf the second injury time-out is taken at the conclusion of thefirst 30-second tiebreaker period and the opponent already hasthe choice at the beginning of the second 30-second tiebreakerperiod, the opponent would then have the added choice at thefirst restart after the beginning of the second 30-secondtiebreaker period. Tournament AdvancementRule 10-2-9 (NEW)Tournament Bracket FormatRules 10-3-6 and 10-3-7AIf two wrestlers, in the championship bracket simultaneouslycannot continue the match due to both being disqualified forstalling or having their injury or blood time elapse, the wrestlerwho is leading on points at the time the match is terminatedwill continue in the consolation bracket. If the match is tied atthe time of termination, neither wrestler will continue.The committee revised the tournament bracket format.This rule change allows the tournament director moreflexibility in conducting a smooth running competition thatfits the unique needs of a particular tournament. All competitors must meet this standard or wearan appropriate cover. This cover must be worn to the weighin for the referee’s approval and then removed prior tostepping on the scale. A competitor has a minimum and maximum weight thatmust be adhered to in order to compete at a particularweight class. All competitors must be in the designated weigh-in areathat is established by the meet administration at theprescribed time and shall not leave the weigh-in area unlessgranted permission by a meet administrator. RepresentationRule 1-4 Rule 1-4-2:No wrestler shall represent the school in more than oneweight class in any meet or compete in more than fivematches (championship or consolation), including forfeitsin any one day. Rule 1-4-3:No contestant shall wrestle in two consecutive matcheswith less than a 45-minute rest between them. Theconclusion time of each match shall be recorded. Rule 1-4-4:A contestant shall not accept a forfeit in one weight classand compete in another class.Team BenchesRule 2-2*Rule 2-2-1:For dual meets, all team personnel, includingcoaches, other than actual participating contestants shall berestricted to an area which is at least 10 feet from the edge ofthe mat and the scorer’s table, where facilities permit.*Rule 2-2-2: During tournament competition, a maximum of twoteam personnel (coaches and/or non-participating contestants)will be permitted on chairs at the edge of the mat. It ispermissible to allow coaches on the corner of the mat in arestricted zone. In tournaments where coaches are permitted onthe corner of the mat, the restricted zone shall be defined byeither a contrasting line marked on the mat with paint or tape or acontrasting colored surface under the chairs. The restricted zoneshall be no closer than 5 feet to the edge of the circle. Coachesshall be seated at least 10 feet from the scorer’s table, wherefacilities permit.Conduct of Coaches, TeamPersonnel and Others*Rule 7-5-2: Coaches and other team personnelare restricted to the bench/chairs while the clockis running and during normal out of bounds andresumption of wrestling. The coach may movetowards the mat only during a charged time-outor at the end of the match.
