Executive SummaryIn January 2021, the Office of the Waterfront and Civic Projects hosted a virtual open house toencourage feedback on a new playground that will be located on Pier 58.Attendance 1,137 unique users visited the online open house between January 13 and January 31, 2021o Visitors to multi-lingual sites: Simplified Chinese: 48 Somali: 133 Spanish: 143186 responses to the playground survey (two in Chinese, one in Spanish, the rest in English)Key feedback Out of the three concepts, respondents had the most positive feedback for Sea Dreams andAbove and BelowMany respondents suggested combining elements from the three conceptsRespondents want a variety of play for all ages and abilities, including providing accessibleramps to get up higher up in the structuresThe respondent’s favorite play elements are the climbing features, covered slides and swingsMany respondents want an iconic playground that is not only fun to play on, but also sculptural,unique and beautiful to look at. IntroductionThe City of Seattle’s Office of the Waterfront & Civic Projects is designing a new Pier 58 that will includea children’s playground.Due to the pandemic, all outreach was conducted virtually, including an online open house that wasopen between November 13 and December 6, 2020 and included a pier design overview andopportunities for input on all aspects of the pier. Another online open house was open January 13through January 31, 2021 and focused on three playground concepts designed according to thefeedback received in late 2020. All materials were available in English, Spanish, Simplified Chinese andSomali. The 2020 online open house received 1,174 visitors with 148 responses to the playgroundsurvey, and the 2021 online open house received 1,137 visitors with 186 responses to the playgroundsurvey.Outreach and notifications toolsThis engagement opportunity was promoted via the following notification methods: Online display ads in local media publicationsincluding South Seattle Emerald, The SeattleTimes, International Examiner, Parentmap,Seattle’s Child, Seattle Magazine – Parenting page,and translated ads in Runta News, LaRazaNW, ElMundo, and Seattle Chinese Times.E-newsletter sent to 12,501 subscribers of theWaterfront Seattle program email list.Social media blurbs were posted on theWaterfront Seattle social media accounts,including Instagram and Facebook. Playground survey resultsThe playground survey encouraged feedback on three design concepts that were developed with thecomments received from the first round of engagement, in November and December 2020. Theproposed 5,000-square-foot playground (about the size of a basketball court) will be located on Pier 58between the Seattle Aquarium and Miner’s Landing.What we heard in late 2020Pier Piles, Shoreline and Washington Waters were the three themes that were initially presented. Therewas no overwhelmingly preferred theme, but many appreciated the use of vertical structures to providea balance with the flatness of the pier and some transparency to highlight the view of Elliott Bay fromthe promenade and to enhance safety and supervision of the play space.
