REGIONAL NEWSMushrooms and Health goHand in HandCo-author of the best-selling CSIRO Total WellbeingDiet, Dr Manny Noakes has told Australian dietitians thata soon to be published international scientific reviewconfirms the strong links between mushrooms and health.Dr Noakes said a team of CSIRO scientists conducted athorough review of 11,000 international papers written overthe last 100 years and had identified some 3,000 papers forfurther evaluation. This industry-funded examination ofmushrooms and health covered topics ranging from antioxidantactivity and anti-viral properties, through to the impact on avariety of cancers and immune function.Addressing a special mushroom breakfast held at the DietitiansAssociation of Australia conference in Darwin, Dr Noakessaid the review highlighted the wide range of health benefitsbeing examined by mushroom researchers throughout theworld.Accredited Practising Dietitian and healthy eating specialist,Glenn Cardwell, said mushrooms unique nutrition profileprovided growing evidence of their importance in the Australiandiet. Mr Cardwell said research had shown that mushroomswere the only non-animal food to provide a natural source ofVitamin D; at the same time delivering one of the strongestantioxidant effects of all foods; a healthy dose of essential Bgroup vitamins - riboflavin, niacin and biotin - and a range ofessential minerals such as selenium, phosphorus andpotassium."While many Australian are generally cautious about sunexposure, there is a growing body of evidence that low levelsof Vitamin D are contributing to a range of diseases includingosteoporosis, diabetes and some cancers."Page 8"The unique nature of mushrooms is that the action of sunlightis able to trigger the production of Vitamin D.""Over the next 12 months the industry is planning to deliverD-rich mushrooms for sale, providing consumers with a naturalsolution to the Vitamin D problem." Mr Cardwell said recentAustralian research had now answered the often asked questionof whether mushrooms provide the essential vitamin B12."While many believe B12 is only found in animal foods,University of Western Sydney research has now confirmedthat it is available in mushrooms in modest amounts and, moreimportantly, in a form that is easily absorbed by the body."Dr Noakes and Mr Cardwell were joined by television identity,"Fast Ed" Halmagyi who hosted the dietitians mushroombreakfast. He told the assembled dietitians that while health was animportant consideration, fresh food was also about taste."The superb flavour was always the first attraction ofmushrooms, followed closely by their versatility and ease ofuse in everyday cooking.""So many people have come up to me and said that mymushroom burger was the best burger they had ever had. Thebarbecue is one of my all time favourite ways to cookmushrooms, from burgers to grilled mushroom quesadillas,"he said.Mr Cardwell said the great taste and health attributes ofmushrooms provided a compelling argument to regularly includemushrooms in your diet.Coober Pedy Regional TimesCADNEY HOMESTEADhttp://www.cadneyhomestead.com.au/155 kms north of Coober Pedy on the Stuart HwyHotel/Motel & Budget RoomsFully Licensed RestaurantCaravan Park & CampingAll Fuel - Take Away Meals & BarTel: 8670 7994Fax: 8670 7934Located just 155kms Nth of Coober Pedyon the Stuart Highway you will find an oasisin the desert, Cadney HomesteadRoadhouse.
