presidents report2009 has been a successful year for the Association with anumber of highlights. There are too many for me to mentionall of them here however I will make a special mention ofPrashanth’s bronze medal at the World Championshipson the pommel horse, Naazmi Johnston’s outstandingperformance at the RG World Championships where sheplaced higher than any other Australian Rhythmic gymnasthas achieved, coach Songliang Xiong for being recognisedas the NSW Sports Federation Coach of the Year, ShaunSwadling and Aiden Thomas who achieved the silver medalin the U19 Men’s Syncro at the World Age Games, andSophie Beucker who placed 7th at the Suzuki World Cupin AerobicsIn addition to these sporting highs the Association as awhole was named as a finalist in the NSW Sports FederationSporting Organisation of the Year category, and a gold awardat the NSW Sporting Injuries Committee Annual Awards.The Board has made a firm commitment to furtherunderstanding the needs of the members to ensure thatwe are working in partnership to meet the needs of themembership. The Board firmly believes that the futuresuccess of the Association is dependant upon a cooperativeapproach and the engagement of all stakeholders within ourgrowing gymnastics family.In 2009 we have continued to build the capacity of theAssociation to deliver its programs and services and in2010 a number of long term strategic objectives will beachieved. Importantly there is on the horizon a number ofexciting new initiatives which will cement New South Walesposition as one of the, if not the leading member associationin Australia.Pleasingly our financial strength has enabled us to buildupon our commitment to the judging community by assistingour FIG judges with the expense of reaccrediting under thenew cycle.Leveraging off the financial strengths from previous yearswe will increase the assistance we provide to the stateteams and our judging community in 2010 in line with ourstrategic objectives.Our success in 2009 could only have been achievedthrough the dedication and commitment made by the teamin the GNSW office led by our very capable CEO AaronBloomfield.In closing thank you to all of our committee members,volunteers, partners and suppliers for your ongoingcontribution and support to ensure that gymnastics in NSWcontinues to prosper.Phil Western7

chief executive officers report‘Outstanding’ was the term used to describe the dedicationand coaching achievements of Songliang Xiong, the HeadCoach of the NSWIS Men’s Program, as he was recognisedas the NSW Sports Federation 2009 Coach of the Year.Course, Course Presenters Course and Harassment freetraining course to include gymnastics specific content.The Department of Sport and Recreation has been a verysupportive partner of the Association and have approvedgrants for the development of a facilities strategy, ‘Get upand Cheer’, a ‘Leadership Camp’, and the ‘GymnasticsNSW – Project Connect’ disability program.2009 has been a year of significant achievement by manyof our gymsports on the international competition arena.Following up on the success of previous years NSWIS SydneyOlympic Park athlete Prashanth Sellathurai returned fromthe World Championships with a bronze medal the MoscowWorld Cup with a silver medal on his pet event the pommelhorse. Prashanth truly is one of the worlds best performerson this apparatus. Meriden gymnast Naazmi Johnstonbroke new ground in RG by becoming the highest rankedRG gymnast in Australia’s history at a World Championshipsby placing 38th in the all-around competition. EastlakesShaun Swadling and Aiden Thomas returned home fromthe World Age Games with a silver medal in the U19 Men’sSyncro. North Coast Academy’s Sophie Beucker placed 7that the Suzuki World Cup in Aerobics and NSWIS athletesMichael Mercieca (Nepean) and Mitchell Morgans (Gosford)represented Australia at the Junior Japan Cup.The Board of Management, through the business plan,has made a very clear commitment to reducing the costsassociated with volunteering for our sport and a commitmentto assisting our state teams. To this end the Board contributed 25,000 towards the states judges attending the FIG courseand 25,000 towards our state teams expense.To round off the year Gymnastics NSW was named as afinalist in the Sporting Organisation of the Year category atthe NSW Sports Awards and a Gold Award for the effectiveeducation of safe sport practices at the NSW SportingInjuries Committee annual awards.The NSW Board is very firm in its view to ensure fairnessand equity and for that reason it continues to ensure thatall members contribute the fees, and register the gymnastsrequired under our rules and regulations. Collectively wesucceed in keeping the costs of participating in our sport toa minimum.2009 was also a year of firsts with NSW sending its firstlevel 10 team to Japan and its first display team to Denmarkand Norway. My sincere thanks to Don Bollard, Justin andSarah Hayes, Desiree Jones, Natalie Jaques and AmandaJudd for coordinating these tours.Looking forward to 2010 Gymnastics NSW is in a verystrong cultural, financial and operational position. We havecurrently made significant progress on a number of initiativeswithin the Development Plan, 2010 will see these initiativesintegrated to complete our development strategies.In accordance with the Associations business plan a numberof development initiatives were implemented during the yearincluding the Gymnastics NSW Disability Project, ‘Get up andCheer’, ‘Developing Volunteers for the Future’ leadershipcamp, and the implementation of the previously drafted‘School Provider Quality Assurance Program’. Increasingaccess, promoting inclusive activities, and establishing aframework for quality practices being the obvious objectivesof these initiatives. In addition to these we continued the rollout of the ‘Member Protection Information Officer Course’to provide all clubs with an opportunity to meet the new2010 affiliation requirement, the Gymnastics NSW RiskManagement Course, to assist clubs with legal compliance,and the Gymnastics Australia Club 10 Program. We alsoimplemented a new course in 2009 titled ‘Harassment FreeTraining’. My thanks goes to our Development ManagerFelicity Colbourne for driving many of these initiatives.2010 will also be a year where we extend our partnershipsand increase the connectivity of our programs and resourcesto ensure the quality of member services. It is my visionfor NSW to have successful high performance programsand networks across all gymsports, an effective marketingand promotions regime, programs, services and educationprograms that are effective, accessible and relevant, the costof volunteering for the sport eliminated, and our state teamsand international team members fully subsidized. Eachyear we move incrementally toward this vision. Throughplanning forecasts I am confident that over the next twoyears Gymnastics NSW will be strongly placed to furthersucceed in the attainment of this vision across many of theareas. To succeed in this progress all members should beproud because the achievement and the improvement is acollective accomplishment.Key to driving gymnastics forward is our commitment toconnect gymnastics with external programs and providers.To this end we continued the delivery of the traineeshipCertificate II in Gymnastics Coaching, an initiative whichhas seen tens of thousands of dollars injected straight intoclub programs. We partnered with ‘Sportspeople.com’ toprofessionalize our sports recruitment practices and weworked closely with the Department to amend the MPIOIn closing , thank you to all clubs, gymnasts, coaches andjudges for being an important part of this great sport, thankyou to all 200 Committee Members who sit on the states 35committees, thank you to our volunteers for the significant8

chief executive officers reportcontribution that they have made to helping to deliver eventsand programs at a high standard, particular thanks to ourTechnical Directors, Judging Coordinators, CompetitionCoordinators, Regional Supervisors, Course Presentersand Course Assessors, all of which dedicate hours of timeto the development of our sport. Thanks to the Board ofGymnastics NSW who are very passionate and committedto achieving the vision previously mentioned, and thank youto our wonderful staff who work very hard on your behalf tokeep us moving forward. The Pathways and Opportunities workshopwill provide attendees with information on all of the differentopportunities available for their disability participants. 74 club visits across the state were made to discussindividual club development needs. 4 x Club development workshops held at EducationCongress. 8 x Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO) coursesheld across the majority of regions in NSW with over 160clubs with 1 or more Trained MPIO. Increase in the number of star 2 – 3 clubs, with 4 clubsbecoming Star 3 status. 7 In House Club Harassment Free workshops held with102 coaches and club personnel trained. 58% of clubs completed the GNSW Facility Audit. GNSW developed a GNSW Quality Assured SchoolProvider program in line with the Premier Council forActive Living Guidelines. 14 Clubs/Providers became GNSW Quality AssuredSchool Provider. GNSW Disability Project secured NSW Sport andRecreation Funding. GNSW Leadership Camp Program secured NSW Sportand Recreation funding. GNSW Provided support and guidance to 11 new clubs. Working groups and forums were established for “GNSWConnect” Disability forums, School Provider Forums,Leadership Camp working group.School Provider Workshops:GNSW will be holding a 1 day School Providers workshopsat Education Congress in January 2010. The workshopstopics will be; Writing of Unit and lesson Plans, Funwarm up and Stretches, Further extend your programs tomeet the curriculum and Guidance on the GNSW QualityAssured School Provider Program and Premier Council forActive Living and other resources available to assist you inschool.Club Mapping and Facility StrategyDevelopment:GNSW have now collated all the results from GNSW Clubfacility Audits completed in 2009. With the information a clubmapping exercise will be completed and the GNSW facilitystrategy will be developed. The strategy will have variousdifferent sections, one with club mappings and findingsfrom the audits reflecting the needs for gymnastics in LocalGovernment Agency areas. Another area will be guidelinesand documents on starting up a new club, guidelines forfacility providers and councils on layout and things toconsider for a gymnastics facility and the final section willinclude a fit for purpose gymnastics model document.For further information on the various new programslaunched and developed in 2009 please go to the“Member Programs” section on the GNSW websitewww.gymnsw.org.auCert IV Gymnastics Small BusinessManagement:In 2010 GNSW will be launching the 1st Cert IV GymnasticsSmall Business Management 12 month course. This coursewill provide Gymnastics club personnel to gain a officialnational accreditation in Small Business Management alongwith completing all documentation for Club 10 Star 3 or 4submissions. GNSW are working in partnership with CageSports and Australian Apprenticeships to role out this newgymnastics education opportunity.New Programs being developed for 2010:GNSW Leadership Camp:GNSW will hold the 1st 14-15 year old GNSW LeadershipCamp in January 2010. The camp will be held over 2 daysat NSW Sport and Recreation facility - Sydney Academy ofSport. The girls will be up skilled on all areas of Leadershipin Gymnastics, in order to develop our future leaders. Theywill be provided with generic leadership building with theinclusion of practical outdoor activities and the followingday will consist of various gymnastic specific workshopson safety in the gym, development of a gym club, judging,events management and committee roles. Approximately30 girls will be provided with the opportunity to attend.Rebound Therapy coming to Australia:GNSW are currently working in partnership with ReboundTherapy dot org in the UK to launch Rebound Therapy inAustralia. In 2010 Rebound Therapy dot Org will come toNSW to provide intensive training to a selection of futureRebound Therapy Presenters in order for GNSW to be ableto role out Rebound Therapy training in NSW and work withclubs and schools to become Rebound Therapy Centres.GNSW are working in Partnership with Castle Hill RSLGymnastics Club to hold the intensive training.Launch of the Disability Awareness Course andPathways and Opportunities Workshop:GNSW will be launching the new Disability Awareness courseand Pathways and opportunities workshop in January 2010.Key club personnel across NSW have been assisting GNSWwith the development of this course at the GNSW ConnectDisability Forums. The Disability Awareness Course willincrease coaches awareness in areas of Visual and HearingGNSW looks forward to working with all GNSW clubs in 2010through continued development of Club10 within clubs andalso through the new projects that have been developed.Felicity Colbourne10

events manager report2009 was the year or breakthrough success andaccomplishments; full of individual and team achievementswhich everyone should be extremely proud of.NSW men’s high performance gymnast PrashanthSellathurai had an outstanding year in 2009 bringing home3 silver and 1 bronze medal on Pommel Horse at separateWorld events for Australia. Michael Mercieca also claimedSilver for Australia at the Youth Olympics on High Bar.In 2009 the Elite State Championships returned to thesuccessful combined event, the event provided and fantasticopening to our State events for the year delivering large livefeed video screens in both Halls of the Sport Centre for thefirst time. NSW Gymnastics also delivered this professionalapproach for a further two more State Championshipweekends in 2009.Our involvement with the media and production companiescontinued it’s growth in 2009. Gymnastics NSW had anumber of athletes involved in special performances andphotographic shoots throughout the year, which providesgreat experience and exposure for our young athletes.Country Championships welcomed a new era, co-hostedby Gosford Gymnastics and Central Coast GymnasticsClubs the new venue for the championships proved agreat success. Trampoline Sports was re-introduced to theschedule and certainly highlighted the growing participationof this gymsport within NSW.The Championships were supported immensely by the hostclubs and the enormous amount of volunteers involved.The event received great support from the local mediagenerating some reat exposure for the country clubs andtheir gymnastics programs.2009 saw two new members to the NSW Gymnastics team;in July we welcomed Nicholas Carroll, to the sports programsand events team. Nic fitted in very quickly and has adaptedwell into his new position managing Trampoline Sports andRhythmic Gymnastics. education reportClub Workshops2009 saw a significant rise in Clubs running in-house andopen workshops due to our new updating policy. This nowallows clubs to run updating seminars for their memberswithin their club via a sanctioning process with GNSWand Gymnastics Australia. Many clubs participated in thisprogram and by December 2009, NSW Clubs had run 30Workshops state wide.Coaches Congress2009 was another successful year for our premiere educationevent .The event was held over 2 days, presented 36 lecturesand attracted 256 participants.UpdatingAs mentioned above 2009 was a successful year with inhouse and open workshops conducted by Clubs. As well asour Annual Congress, we have strongly encouraged Clubs totake the initiative to be actively involved in their own updatingwith great response, especially from regional clubs.Correspondence ClubUpdating via correspondence is very necessary for a state asbig as NSW so throughout 2009 most video were convertedto DVD’s and were added to the hire list. These have beenvery popular and more will be added over time.Presenters2009 saw GNSW host the first Presenter Course inconjunction with Gymnastics Australia, Australia SportsCommission and NSW Sport and Recreation.This course is gymnastics specific and was attended by 14up and coming inspiring presenters across all gym sports.2009 also saw all presenters attend an update workshop tokeep them up to date of all changes.Sharyn Samels-White13

MG JUDGING COORDINATORS reportAs this was my first year as the NSW Judging Coordinator itwas very challenging at times but with the support of all theMG SMC, our FIG and National Judges the work became alittle easier as the year went on.
