Study findings indicated: (1) 41% of thetransfer students had graduated from programs at CCP; (2) the averagecumulative GPA for transfer students at CCP was 2.9; (3) an averageof 88% of CCP-earned credits transferred into the programs at thereceiving institutions; (4) the average number of credits earned perstudent at the transfer school was 25; (5) the average ratio ofcredits earned to credits attempted at the transfer school was 95%;(6) the transfer students experienced an average drop of 0.7 pointsin GPA between CCP and the transfer institution; and (7) only 7% ofthe students transferred into programs that were obviously differentfrom their CCP program of study. The report includes informai' ion ontransfer activity at each of of the 24 responding transferinstitutions, including numbers of students transferring intoparticular departments, the programs of study taken by the transferstudents at CCP, the numbers of students experiencing academicdifficulties, and the CCP courses that did not transfer. *************************Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be madefrom the original ******************************

as.IntroductionOver the years, a sizeable number of CCP students havetransferred out of CCP and into other Philadelphia-area collegesand universities.Previous institutional research indicated thatnine months after leaving CCP, approximately half of the CCPgraduates and 301. of the former, nongraduating CCP students hadenrolled in a program of study at another school.Unfortunately, in the past little information was gathered bythe College that could be used to evaluate the post-CCP academicprogress of our former students.Several pieces of informationthat routinely appear on a Student transcript would be useful forthis purpose and therefore form the basis of this transferoutcomes report.Grade point average haS received much attention in transferoutcomes studies conducted by others.Much of this preoccupationwith GPA stems from its acceptance as an efficient and relativelyreliable measure of student academic progress. In addition, acomparison of QPA's across schools is a usefulmeasure of thedegree of academic assimilation achieved by former CCP studentsat their transfer school. CCP and transfer school SPA havetherefore been included in this report.Credit hour information is interesting for several reasons.Ry itself, it provides an uncomplicated measure of studentpersistence. In addition, research conducted by others hasindicated there is a postive correlation between the amour* ofCourse work completed at community college and the studentsacademic performance at the transfer school. For these reasons,CCP credit hour information and graduation status are included inthis report. In this report the analysis of specific CCP courses thattransfer into four- year programs was limited to nonremedialcourses in which the student earned a grade of C or better. Eventhough course analyses conducted within these parameters measureshe effectiveness of articulation between the schools rather thanmeasuring a direct student outcome, they have been included inthis study since the presence or absence of articulationagreements will effect outcomes, particularly transfer creditinformation. Finally, several additional measures of student persistenceare worth considering in a transfer outcomes study. These includethe number of cumulative credits earned and the ratio of creditsearned to creditS attempted at the transfer school. This report is a supplement to an earlier IR Report #26.entitled "Transfer Outcomes Fall 1982".Report *26 providedadmissions and matriculation information for former CCP studentswho transferred to other institutions in the Philadelphia area. Each of these students would have matriculated in Fall '8213BEST COPY AVAILABLE

semester and completed at least 9 credits at CCP.A total of 30 receiving institutions were included in thestudy.Only Drexel and Lincoln Universities did not cooperate byproviding transcripts of work completed by our former students attheir schools.A list of participating schools, the number of former CCPmatriculants and the number of applicants appears in Table 1.TABLE 1Former CCP StudentsAdmission and Matriculation at Area Colleges[Transfer SchoolNumber ofMatriculantsTemple University111La Salle College46Widener College19Thomas Jefferson University18Hahnemann University9West Chester College8Peirce Jr. College7Penn State University6Phila. One drawback with thisapproach is the diversity of the information that is routinelyprinted on transcripts. Although all schools list the courses thestudent takes internally this is where the standardi4ation ends. Most school transcripts contain the name and number of tranfercredits from other institutions, Some iist the specific coursesthat transfer into their programs, a few record current student24It3tST COPY AVAILABLE1

Because of this diversity, status or graduation information.much of the transfer outcome information in this study will beaggregated by transfer institution, yeilding a descriptiveprofile for each receiving institution.4,241xsi oA summary of much of the transfer outcomes informationappears in Tables 2 and 3, which are on the next two pages.Table 2 summarizes CCP-related information for each transferTable 3 handlesSchool that responded to the data request. The totalinformationinthesame way.transfer school-relatedset of figures that appear at the top of both tables can be usedFor example,as a baseline when reviewing institutional data.41% of all matriculated students graduated from CCP. It should be pointedout that much of I's information is based on one or two studentsand should therefc. ; be reviewed cautiously. As a group, the matriculated students included in this studydid well academically while at CCP, the average cumulative CCPand Albert Einstein matriculantsOnly PeirceGPA was 2.9.earned CP'A's below 2.7 while at CCP.An average of 89"/. of CCP earned credits transferred into theprograms at the receiving institutions.
