Amy's View is that kind of show.Amy's View, David Hare'sprizewinning drama, covers sixteen years- between 1979 and 1995.His story, centering on thesmall family of a famous theatricalactress, is skillfully set against theswirling backdrop ofBritish politics, world economy, and ruthless mediaexploitations. Esme Allen is talented, admired and managing a life in Londontheatre. She believes in theatre - in Art.Her daughter, Amy, passionately believesin her new boyfriend, Dominic. He's abit rough around the edges, more thana little opportunistic, and overtly hostileto the pretentions of artists. Still, hehas ambitions to shake up the world hecriticizes. And, he's sexy. Two other characters circu late around Esme, her sometimesexasperating mother-in-law, Evelyn, andEsme's financial advisor (and would-besuitor), Frank. Using this small family, the playwright details an avalanche ofchanging circumstances that push andpull on each character's life trajectory. As hard-to-please New Yorkercritic John Simon wrote:"You may want to know whatDavid Hare's Amy's View is about. Hardto answer . the best I can do is: It'sabout life. About mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, human relations. It is about the childlike artist and thediligent worker; about theater versusreal life; about art versus pseudo-art (TV,action movies); about being right butultimately wrong, or wrong but ultimatelyproven right. It is about the lure andpitfalls of a materialistic society, aboutwhether love and faith and perseverancewill prevail over hedonism and greedor be unjustly punished. It is, I repeat, about life.Being about life, it is aboutsurprises all the way: big surprises thatthe author springs on us quasi-casually,and leaves not fully explained. Amy'seponymous view assumes differentmeanings in the course of the play, yetall are attempts at a clearer perception, truer understanding of our existence.Does this come about? You tell me.It would be an insult to thismultifarious play to reveal more. It defieseasy summary, prompt evaluation. Youmust pay close attention to details, andthink long after."If all this sounds like "heavylifting" for audiences, I've led you astray.Terrific actors are here to help! It takesa cadre of six accomplished actors topower this play to its full emotionalrevelations, and it's been my honorto work with six great truth tellers toprepare this production for TheatreThree. My sincerest thanks to each in thecast, and especially to author David Harefor this beautiful, tall dramatic mountainhe's given us to climb.ARTISTIC STAFFDavid Hare PLAYWRIGHT» Playwright,English-born Sir David Hare, was educatedat Lancing College and Jesus College,Cambridge, and currently lives in London. He co-founded Portable Theatre Company;became Resident Dramatist at the RoyalCourt Theatre in London and then ResidentDramatist at the Nottingham Playhouse in1973. His talent for losinghimself in an array of costumes, faces, and personalities brought him from the public schoolsof Brooklyn, to the Borscht Circuit- the summer camps of the Catskill Mountains, totelevision and film, and all over the world performing in variety shows for children andmilitary troops. Paired with his wife, the levelheaded Sylvia Fine, who wrote much of hismaterial, he was unstoppable as a force in comedy and philanthropy. His audiences werealways rolling in their seats with laughter and often generously giving to his favorite charities, primarily UNICEF.He was a man of many hats with split-second costume changes for countless characters, butalso fulfilling roles far removed from acting. He held every commercial pilot license, flyinghimself to many of the stops on his world tours, could imitate almost any language, was amaster chef, and conducted symphonies relying on his ability to soak in a score despite aninability to read music. His tour of symphony orchestras, raising money for musicianmaintenance funds and pension plans, took him to New York, Los Angeles, London, Toronto,Tel Aviv, Stockholm, and even to Dallas.A Hit at the Palladium, Belovedin EnglandBALLIN' THEJACKbyChris Smith&Jim BurrisTHE LOBBY NUMBER by MaxLiebman&Sylvia FineANATOLE OF PARIS by Sylvia FineDINAH by Sam M.
