Nebraska Family HelplineStudent CouncilThe Nebraska Family Helpline is a collaborative effortinvolving the state of Nebraska and Boys Town. TheHelpline’s focus is on improving families’ access toservices within the child and family care system.The Helpline is supervised by licensed mental healthprofessionals. Trained Helpline counselors assist callersby: assessing immediate safety needs. identifying the potential level of a behavioral healthcrisis. making recommendations or referrals toappropriate resources. helping them connect to emergency resources orproviders.Congrats to the 8th grade class for winning our can fooddrive! Wechoose a Bible story to read and hang an ornament/storyon our little tree. We also tear a link off of our Adventchain for another suggestion on things to do. EveryMonday we “light” another candle on our Advent wreath.In class we continue to focus on the Sacrament ofPenance. We’ve read about a shepherd with a lostsheep and about Zacchaeus. We are trying to learn thedifference between confession, contrition, penance, andabsolution. The students are being very diligent aboutmemorizing the Act of Contrition.

In Language Arts we have spent a lot of time reading,writing about, and comparing many types of storms. Weeven wrote weather poems! We are becoming proficientat digraphs, compound words, and changing the endingson verbs to match the tense of our sentences. We allwork very hard.We have completed our unit on numbers to onethousand and are currently working on addition of threedigit numbers with regrouping. Congratulations to Jessewho advanced two levels in math facts this month,William and Delaney who advanced four levels, andGizzy who is smokin’ through the facts by finishing eightlevels this month! Many students are stuck on facts withsums between eleven and twenty. Please practice thesemore difficult facts at home periodically.We have started a new unit in Social Studies by lookingat different landforms and bodies of water. We will finishour unit on land habitats with a test before Christmasbreak in Science.Have a blessed Christmas! We’ll meet again on January8th . Next year!Third GradeFifth GradeMrs. BoisenFifth graders are eagerly participating in St. Philip Neriand classroom Advent activities. Every day they want toread from our Advent calendar and take turns puttinganother ornament on our little Christmas tree. A studenttakes a link from our Christmas Kindness CountdownChain and reads what our act of kindness will be for theday. (Students brainstormed different acts of kindness,then a chain was made out of their ideas) The class isparticipating in bringing in baby items for The EssentialPregnancy Service. Classroom religion assignmentshave included creating a Scripture Star ornament andconstructing their own Advent reflection. They know andshow the quiet peace and light that they can bring toothers this Advent Season as we wait for Jesus. MerryChristmas from the Fifth Grade!Mrs. OttingerSixth GradeMr. HughesLiterature classes are going strong – guided reading ison Tuesdays and Thursdays, in which students arereading and analyzing novels together in small groups.Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders are also practicingreading and writing poetry, and reviewing literature termsfor their mid-term vocabulary exam.Middle school math classes are also going very well!The sixth graders have been studying percent,proportions, and introductory algebra; seventh andeighth graders have been perfecting their skills withfigures, scale models, ratios, and proportions.It has been a pleasure wrapping up a busy 2018 with themiddle schoolers!Seventh GradeMiss KnippthFourth GradeMiss Schroer8 Grade ScienceEighth Graders can now identify the products andreactants in a chemical equation, as well as balance anequation to reflect the amount of each element neededfor a reaction to occur. While incorporating math withscience can be difficult, they have worked exceptionallyhard to master this skill!7th Grade Science and ReligionSeventh Grade has enjoyed learning about classificationof organisms. They can now explain the purpose ofscientific names. They were particularly challenged touse a dichotomous key to identify insects, but enjoyedlearning about different insect names in the process!In Religion, students have taken the time to prepare forAdvent by writing out acts of kindness to do each day.This, along with daily reflection questions focused on thisseason of preparation, has taught them how to calmtheir hearts and prepare for Christ’s coming.

6th Grade Science and ReligionSixth Grade has recently learned about earthquakes andvolcanoes. Although it is unlikely there will be anearthquake in Nebraska, if you need any advice on whatto do during an earthquake, ask a sixth grader foradvice! Or, if you are curious why an earthquakeoccurred in Alaska recently, they can explain why.Library and ComputersMrs. ClaytonIn Religion, students have been learning about theliturgical year. They enjoyed making a liturgical calendarto show the different seasons. We have discussed howto prepare our hearts for Christ during Advent whileawaiting the celebrations of the Christmas season!5th Grade ScienceFifth graders are now experts about adaptations andecosystems. They can explain several examples ofmimicry and camouflage, as well as name biotic andabiotic parts of an ecosystem. This group is alwaysexcited to learn something new!Thank you to everyone that brought in Christmasornaments to decorate the library Christmas tree. After aslow start we had 10 ornaments brought in that thestudents voted on. Our winners were first place TianaEarlywine, Dhiadra Nelson second place and third placeGianna Fink. Dhiadra was unavailable for a picture.ArtEighth GradeMs. AdamsMerry Christmas from 8th grade!Mrs. MillerWe have done some fun projects in this last month of thesemester. Kindergarten made snowmen out of modelmagic clay to practice their small motor skills and clayhandling techniques. 1st grade tried “telephone drawing”to see how different people interpreted and changed artover time. In 2nd grade, we learned about depth andperspective. In two dimensional space, when somethingis smaller and higher up on the page, it looks like it isfarther away! In 3rd grade we have been working onseveral kinds of weaving, including learning aboutGhanaian Kente cloth. 4th and 5th grades have beenusing most of their art time to practice for the ChristmasProgram, so all of the music classes in the last week ofschool before break going to be additional art classes!6th grade has just finished their illuminated letters. Wealso watched the movie “The Secret of Kells” which isloosely based on the history of one of the most importantilluminated documents in history, the Book of Kells whichwas made in Ireland. 7th grade finished making threedimensional flowers. Their acrylic paint and paperleaves give life to their sculptures! 8th grade finishedtheir batik projects. We have had a lot of fun usingmelted wax and cloth dye to make beautiful textile art inthis traditional Indonesian style. In the last week ofschool before break, all of the classes will be working onsome crafts that can be given as gifts. Keep an eyeopen!

Physical Education, Health and SpanishMrs. PlewaTime flies when you’re having fun! It is mind-boggling tome that we are already half-way through the school year!We have had so much fun in all of our classes, but Iknow that our students are ready for the break! I hopethat the upcoming Christmas break will allow you manyopportunities for fun, for memory-making, for rest, andfor wonderful time with family and friends.
