By David Carl and Jen IkutaWar-Torn Alliances 2012 will consist of four league seasons, andeach season will span four weeks of brutal WARMACHINEand HORDES action—with a twist. Leagues ideally suitgroups of eight or more players who regularly meet at ahobby store or gaming club where they can play wheneverthey wish. Each league requires an Event Organizer (EO)who is responsible for tracking players’ game results. The War-Torn Alliances league will give players a fantasticopportunity to shine in nearly all aspects of the hobby—painting and modeling, mastery of a faction, and workingwith a teammate to achieve victory for the greater good.In 2012, each season will feature faction pairings thatrepresent an uneasy alliance to conquer territory on themap. These tenuous accords will change with each WarTorn Alliances season. Each league venue, the place sponsoring events (such as ahobby store or gaming club), will have a league champion atthe end of each four-week season, but players of every skilllevel can work to achieve commendations for a wide varietyof accomplishments, for which they will earn military-stylecommendation patches. In addition to these commendations, participants will receive a season patch for each season thatwill form military-style decorations. The highest-rankedplayer in each local league will receive a championship medalat the end of the season. Every community is different, andEOs may include additional provisions, such as ones statingthat players can’t win back-to-back seasons or win more thanone season per year. All games are played at the league venue. A player scores battlepoints and bonus points for each game he plays, and theseleague points determine the player’s standing as shown byhis point total on the league scoreboard poster, or scoreboard(see Scoreboard Rankings). In addition to fighting for the toppoint total on the scoreboard, players can earn individualcommendations and upgrades throughout the league andcan help claim map territories for their alliance on the leaguemap (see League Map). EOs submit their players’ map pointsonline to contribute to each faction/alliance’s influence overthe War-Torn Alliances’ online league map. Map points do notcount toward a player’s league point total.League games can be played at numerous point levelsincluding giant Unbound games and multi-player teamgames (see the Game Size table in the Scoreboard Rankingssection). Changing the point level of a game from 50 pointsto a smaller or larger game size requires the consent of bothplayers (or all players in multiplayer games). Players scorefewer league points for smaller games and more league pointsfor larger games or games with more players based on thetime commitment required. To further set the War-Torn Alliances league experience apartfrom other casual or tournament play experiences, the leagueprovides players with upgrades, unique special rules calledalliances, and unique model rules for season models thatlast for the duration of each league season (see Alliances, seeUpgrades, and see Season Models).

PlayerResponsibilitiesPlayers participating in the league must bring their ownmodels, stat cards, dice, measuring devices, tokens, andtemplates they require for play. The Event Organizer mustapprove any printed media used to track damage. Playersshould check with the EO before the event begins on any rulesquestions they think may arise based on their armies. Each player represents a single faction, Mercenaries,Blindwater Congregation, or Thornfall Alliance, giving sixoptions for both WARMACHINE (Cygnar, Protectorate ofMenoth, Khador, Cryx, Retribution of Scyrah, and Mercenaries)and HORDES (Trollbloods, Circle Orboros, Skorne, Legion ofEverblight, Thornfall Alliance, or Blindwater Congregation)in each league season. An online map tracks faction victoriesof players worldwide.Sportsmanshipand Rules DisputesThe objective of organized play is for everyone to have agood time. Players should remain courteous and patientwith their opponents and the Event Organizer. Players mustcooperate with their opponent to resolve effects. Refusingto do so is explicitly unsporting. Players must remaincourteous and patient with their opponents and the EO.Players must accept all rulings made by the EO whether ornot they agree. The EO always has the final word on rulesquestions or debates. We assume all players are good sports who understand fairplay. If a dispute arises, call an EO for assistance. Playerswill remain mature, polite, and fair to their opponents.Failure to do so will result in immediate disqualification. An EO may eject a player for any incident deemedunsporting. This includes but is not limited to offensive orabusive conduct, bullying, cheating, constant rule arguments, stalling game play, and other immature actions. If stalling issuspected, the EO should be called to monitor play.Painting, Modeling,Proxies &ConversionsAll models used in Privateer Press organized playevents must be Privateer Press miniatures from theWARMACHINE or HORDES ranges. The miniatures mustbe fully assembled on the appropriately sized base forwhich the model was designed. Any non-Privateer Pressmodels, unassembled miniatures, or inappropriately basedmodels are not permitted.Models that have not yet been released to the general publicat the time of the event are not permitted. The Extremeversions of models are perfectly acceptable for use inorganized play.Privateer Press encourages players to have a fully paintedforce on the table. Games with painted armies are moreinteresting to watch and generally enhance the experiencefor all. Although painting is not required, players shouldtake this chance to show off all aspects of the hobby.Model ConversionRulesConversionsPlaying with a uniquely individualized and painted forceis one of the most rewarding aspects of the hobby. Just aswith information disclosure and sportsmanship, players areexpected to be unambiguous about model representation, and all conversions must be clearly pointed out to youropponent before the game to avoid confusion. The following rules must be followed when using convertedmodels in organized play. These rules are meant not to limita player’s modeling options but rather to allow creativitywithout generating an environment that could becomeconfusing during game play. At his discretion, an EO maymake exceptions to these rules to approve any reasonableconversion. The MiniaturesA converted model must contain a majority of parts fromthe WARMACHINE or HORDES model for which therules were written. For example, a Testament of Menothconversion must be composed mostly of parts fromthe Testament of Menoth model. The end result of anyconversion must be clearly identifiable as the intendedminiature and must accurately represent its weapons andequipment as listed in its rules.Swapping WeaponsOn warrior models, converting and swapping weapons isacceptable provided the new weapon represents the sametype of weapon replaced (like swapping one sword foranother). Anything relating to a weapon’s specific rulesmust be maintained to avoid confusion on the tabletop. For example, a weapon with Chain Weapon must still bemodeled as a chain-style weapon, and a weapon’s lengthmust be considered when converting weapons with Reach.Weapons cannot be swapped on warjack and warbeastmodels. Since many of the ’jacks and beasts utilize the samechassis or torso, the weapons are the most identifiable partof the model when looking across the tabletop. Convertingwarjacks and warbeasts is still encouraged, but the aestheticsof the weapons must be maintained. Modifying weapons is

permitted as long as the end result is easily identifiable asthe intended warjack or warbeast’s proper weapon. In the event of a tie on the scoreboard, the player whoreached that point total first is the higher-ranked player.Models/units with upgrade blisters are an exception tothe standard model conversion rules in a number of ways.Because the parts in these blisters define an entirely separateset of stats and abilities, the upgrade parts must be clearlyvisible on the model/unit matching the upgrade stat card inorder to be legal for tournament use. For example, a helljackwith one claw and one harpoon is not Malice. The modelmust have the correct head, harpoon blade, and all threespirit parts from the Malice upgrade in order to be consideredMalice. Additionally, once a model/unit has been converted,it can only be fielded as that model/unit. For example, aWarpwolf with the parts from the Ghetorix upgrade is notan acceptable “conversion” for use with a Warpwolf Stalkerstat card. Lastly, in the case of unit attachment or weaponattachment upgrade, the model(s) that use the upgrade statcard must follow these rules to be legal for tournament use,but the base unit follows the standard conversion policy forwarrior model conversions, above. For example, a BlackDragon Officer & Standard must always use the BlackDragon upgrade stat card and an Iron Fang Pikemen Officer& Standard must always use the Iron Fang Pikemen Officer &Standard stat card, but an Iron Fang Pikemen unit without aUA uses its standard stat card whether or not they have BlackDragon shields (or any other reasonable conversion).Example: If Laine scored 21 points and then Cody scored 21points, Laine would be the higher-ranked player because sheaccumulated 21 points first.BasingMiniatures must be on their appropriately sizedWARMACHINE/HORDES bases, but scenic details maybe added. The base’s perimeter must always be consideredwhen modeling scenic details. While scenic elements mayoverhang the base’s edge, the base itself, not the scenicelements, is used for all measurements. The edge of amodel’s base must not be obscured to the point that accuratemeasuring becomes difficult or impossible.ScoreboardRankingsThe Event Organizer tracks the score of each playerparticipating in the league on the scoreboard poster. Thefirst five games a player plays each week earn him leaguepoints, and these determine a player’s standings on thescoreboard. Players can continue playing games afterreaching their maximum for the week, but additional gameswill not earn league points. At the start of the league, players are added to the scoreboardposter, listing their name and faction. Players earn leaguepoints by playing games based on the chart below. Playercan earn upgrades after reaching specified point thresholds.Upgrades can be used for the duration of the season oncethey have been earned. The number of league points a player scores for playing aleague game depends on the size of the game, the scenario, and the outcome of the game. The following table providesthe league points a player earns for playing a game of agiven size. All players earn the listed number of battlepoints for simply completing the game. Players also earnthe bonus points listed for winning individual scenarios. The winner of each game also earns map points as definedin the League Map section (following).GAME SIZESingle-player15-point game (1 warcaster/warlock)25-point game (1 warcaster/warlock)35-point game (1 warcaster/warlock)50-point game (1 warcaster/warlock)POINTSBattle1112Bonus Map1111111175-point game (1 warcaster/warlock)21UnboundBattleBonus Map200-point Unbound game (4 warcasters/warlocks)52100-point game (2 warcasters/warlocks)150-point Unbound game (3 warcasters/warlocks)34221111TeamBattleBonus Map25-point team game (1 warcaster/warlock)1115-point team game (1 warcaster/warlock)35-point team game (1 warcaster/warlock)50-point team game (1 warcaster/warlock)112111111175-point team game (1 warcaster/warlock)21Team UnboundBattleBonus Map300-pt Unbound game (3 warcasters/warlocks per player)52100-point team game (2 warcasters/warlocks)200-pt Unbound game (2 warcasters/warlocks per player)34221111League MapThe league map is an important element of the War-TornAlliances league system. This online map is updated toshow the progress of each two-faction team over the courseof the league. Links to the league map and additional leaguedetails can be found at www.privateerpress.com.After a one-on-one game, the Event Organizer will input 1map point for the victorious player’s team in that territory. After a team game, the EO will input 1 map point per playerfor the victorious players’ team. The team with the most territories at the end of the leagueseason wins the season. In the case of a tie, the team with themost overall map points wins the league season.

AlliancesAlliances are faction pairings that represent an uneasyagreement to battle toward a common goal. These tenuousaccords will change with each War-Torn Alliances season. Thishas a number of ramifications for War-Torn Alliances players.First, allied factions work together to conquer territory onthe map as described above in the League Map section.Second, allied factions are eligible to play on the sameside during team games. This does not change the factionallegiance of such models. A spell like Defender’s Ward, forexample, can still target only Faction models, not models ofan allied faction.Third, players can field the season model/unit from theirallied faction. This, too, does not change the model’s abilityto benefit from “faction” abilities, but it grants an additionaloption during army construction for allied factions. Whenusing an allied faction model with ’Jack Marshal, a playercan also field marshaled warjacks from the allied faction.Players allied with Mercenaries, Thornfall Alliance, orBlindwater Congregation gain access to the Mercenary orMinion season model, respectively, but players allied witha different faction able to field that Mercenary or Minionmodel do not gain access.Example: Doug is playing Cryx for the current War-TornAlliances season, and Cryx is allied with Legion. Doug is eligibleto field Legion’s league models(s) as well as the league model(s)for Cryx since Cryx is allied with Legion. He is also eligible tofield the Mercenary league model if it works for Cryx (but notthe Minion league model, even if it works for Legion). He alsohas the option to team up with Darla, who is playing Legion. In a 100-point game, Doug can field 50 points of Cryx and 50points of Legion. Doug is able to field Cryx and Legion duringUnbound games as well.Note that players can take part in team league games outsidetheir alliance (something that is particularly common insmaller player communities), but bear in mind that teamgame results are counted toward the scoreboard rankings ormap results only when played with your alliance.UpgradesWar-Torn Alliances introduces a new feature called upgrades.During each league season, players have the opportunityto unlock enhancements for three of their faction’s noncharacter warjacks or warbeasts. Players unlock one oftheir faction’s upgrades after earning 5 battle points, asecond after earning 12, and their faction’s final upgradefor the season after earning 20 battle points. Upgradesrepresent enhancements to particular types of warjacksand warbeasts and change from season to season. Once aplayer unlocks one of their upgrades, it is available to allwarjacks/warbeasts of that particular model type for theduration of the season.Example: Ed plays a 50-point game with his Cygnar armyagainst Doug’s Cryx army to start the league. Doug wins, but Ed still earns 2 battle points, bringing him to a total of 2league points. Ed’s next game is a 50-pointer against Chris andhis Protectorate of Menoth force. Ed wins and earns 2 battlepoints along with 1 bonus point, bringing him to a total of 5league points for the scoreboard rankings. He is now eligible tounlock his first upgrade and chooses the Centurion upgrade. AllCenturions he fields for the remainder of the league will have thelisted upgrade bonus, and Ed will need just 7 more league pointsto unlock his second upgrade.Watch for faction-specific upgrade checklists in futureissues of No Quarter Magazine.Season ModelsEach league season features new stories from PrivateerPress staff writers. The link to these stories can be found atwww.privateerpress.com.During the War-Torn Alliances league season, players havethe opportunity to play some of the characters, warjacks,or units found within these stories. The rules for theseseason models can be found alongside the season leaguedocument online. During a league season, the originalmodels on which these season models are based cannotbe used. Moreover, these models count as if they are themodels on which they are based for bonuses, such as thosegranted by the Elite Cadre ability, Leadership ability, orTheme Force benefits. For example, if a league season includes the 4th AssaultLegion Uhlans (a unit based on the Iron Fang Uhlans),several effects result: Khador players gain access to 4thAssault Legion Uhlans, Kovnik Markov will affect 4thAssault Legion Uhlans, and Theme Forces that include IronFang Uhlans can field 4th Assault Legion Uhlans. Duringthat league season, however, Khador players cannot usestandard Iron Fang Uhlans in league games. In subsequentleague seasons, Khador players will be able to field IronFang Uhlans again but will not be able to field 4th AssaultLegion Uhlans.Season models are legal for all league games throughouttheir season but are not legal models for use outside of theWar-Torn Alliances league.
