St. Paul Lutheran NewsletterOctober 2016Brothers and Sisters in Christ,Grace to you and peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. When Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses to the Castle Church Door in Wittenberg to launch theReformation in 1517 the first Theses stated, “When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said,“Repent” (Mt 4:17), he willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.”Luther's first Theses was both a call to repentance and a confession of humble confession. Atthe end of this month we will commemorate Reformation Sunday. For Lutherans and othersthroughout the world this will launch a year long Commemoration leading the 500th Anniversary ofthe Reformation. As the ELCA, the Northwestern Ohio Synod, and St. Paul's we will be participating in manyactivities and events leading up to the anniversary. We've had our reminder posters up in thesanctuary for a year now. On Monday night we had our first class looking at the document “FromConflict to Communion” published by The Vatican and The Lutheran World Federation. It’s not toolate to join us on Monday evenings at 7 PM in Luther Hall. Also, Fr. Giesige and I are working ona joint study of the document in the Defiance area between Lutherans and Roman Catholics. So,keep your eyes open for dates and times to join with our friends, neighbors, brothers, and sistersto look at the incredible healing happening throughout Christ's Church.October is always a busy month around St. Paul's. THRIVENT - October 2016Is it really October already?—the month thatbrings many beautiful colors and brisk winds. Our temperatures lately still feel like latesummer. Occasionally we have morning fogand cooler evenings. Our days are shorter anddark lasts longer. We can get our big afghanout of storage or use a warm blanket to wrap upin as we relax to read our favorite books. But aswe make our reading selection, we should besure to still make some time for our bible studyand prayer. We can use a little time to reflecton the summer and what brought the smiles andlaughter to our lives. Be thankful for those moments. Look around to see the blessings thatflourished and grew. Find in our hearts thethings that ‘fall cleaning’ should erase—old hurts, angry feelings, and bitterthoughts. Let your heart be open to the change at the time our Lord gives us eachbright colorful day. This is the day our Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad init!We are forming new Action Teams to help support our youth fundraisers to helpthem earn funds for the National Youth Convention in Houston. The first one willbe coming in October and then another one in late December/January. Thank youto Stacy Barker and Dyle Roth for helping out with these projects. If you have afundraiser planned, let us know if we can put together a team to help you.As the leaves fall and we see our world around us changing, take time in your dayto say a prayer for those others around us and in far away places that have moredifficult situations and struggles to face than we do. God be with you all!Cathy Martin,Thrivent Congregational Advocate10

A letter from Bishop Daniel G. BeaudoinDear Friends in Christ,During this summer, I have been slowly reading through the Sermon on the Mount, and the 2 verses that I continue to ponder are Matthew 5:14, "You are the light of theworld. A city built on a hill cannot be hid," and Matthew 5:16, "In the same way, letyour light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give gloryto your Father in heaven." The light of Christ shines in you and through you.My first 5 weeks serving as your bishop have been rich and full. Moving boxes of books.Getting to know the staff. Heading to New Orleans for the Churchwide Assembly.Meeting with synodical committees, pastors, deacons (I like the sound of that), andcongregational leaders. Leading worship and worshiping with you. Celebrating joys.Navigating conflict. And running a half marathon.I thought it would be helpful to share a few updates:Transition Team: The Synod Council has blessed my request to form a 7-memberTransition Team. The team includes:Becky Seibert (Grace Lutheran Church in Fremont)Pastor Stacy Laurer-Scovanner (St. John's Lutheran Church in Sandusky)Pastor Kent Wilson (Executive Committee of Synod Council and Zion Lutheran Churchin Lima)Jacob Henry (Organist at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Pemberville)Pastor Jeff Gramza (St. John Lutheran Church in Celina)Pastor Sarah Schaaf (Conference Dean and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waldo)Pastor Steve Smithberger (Epiphany Lutheran Church in Toledo)This team will meet bi-monthly for 90 days and will offer guidance and leadership in 2primary areas: 1. A proto-mission and vision. 2. Staffing Configuration. Please keep the Transition Team in your prayers as we seek God's will for our synod.Current Staffing: As many of you know all staff positions at the Northwestern OhioSynod are coterminous with the Bishop's position. Upon the retirement of BishopMarcus Lohrmann on July 31, 2016, all of the staff of the Northwestern Ohio Synodturned in their letters of resignation with an end date of August 31, 2016. Pastor CathySchibler has been called to serve at Portico as a full-time Regional Representative.Pastor Marc Miller has been called to serve a congregation in Puerto Rico. The synodsupport staff have been very helpful during this time of transition. Jennifer Prueter,Sherri Wagner, and Sherry Krieger have been kind enough to continue their servicefor an additional 90 days, with 30 day check-ins along the way. Mary Boals wascontracted by Synod Council earlier this year to maintain her position throughDecember 31st. The 4 of them have been instrumental in guiding me through thistransition. When you see them or speak with them, please thank them for their faithfulservice.Future Staffing: I am currently working with the ELCA on the position description fora DEM (Director of Evangelical Mission). This position is a partnership between the11

St. Paul Lutheran NewsletterNorthwestern Ohio Synod and the Domestic Mission unit of the ELCA. Pastor CathySchibler has agreed to serve in a part time capacity as the Director of Candidacy. SherryKrieger will be working with the Call Facilitators to assist those congregations and rosteredleaders that are in the call process. As stated above the Transition Team will be offeringguidance and leadership on a future staffing configuration. As I ponder these past 5 weeks, here are 5 discoveries I have made:1. This is a faster game. I ran track in high school and in college. In high school, I waspretty good. In college, I was average, because the game was that much faster. Whilein the parish, I had time to ponder and to pray. I already find that there is less time toponder. But I know that I must find the time to pray.2. I will make mistakes. In the parish there were a number of times that I had to begforgiveness from others. There will be times when I will beg your forgiveness. Please knowthat the decisions I make, I make for the sake of the Gospel and the Church. Please alsoknow that there will be times when those decisions will be wrong. Please forgive me.3. There is a huge learning curve, and I still don't know what I don't know. Bishopcolleagues tell me that it takes about 2-3 years to learn the ins and outs of this office. Mywife Rachel calls me a "Baby Bishop." In many ways it's true. There is so much to learn.4. In 5 weeks, there have been many joys and already a few challenges. I have made apromise to myself and now to you that I will not allow the challenges to trump the joys.Every time I work in a challenging context or with a challenging leader, I will spend anequal amount of time in a joyful context and with a joyful leader. As the bishop I reservethe right to decide how the time granted to me by God will be spent and I reserve theright to decide the difference between challenging and joyful.5. Finally, as I have long known, prayer is powerful. I have already witnessed the power ofprayer in a congregational setting. Prayer (and the Holy Spirit) has the power to transformcontexts and to change hearts. The promise of your prayers mean so much to me, andwhen you tell me that you are praying for me, I can see it in your eyes, and I find greatcomfort and hope in the prayers you lift to God on my behalf. Please keep them coming.Thank you for taking the time to read these words. This is a bit longer than future e-mailswill be, but there was and is a lot to cover. We are in this together, and I am honored tobe in this with you, for the light of Christ shines in you and through you.Bless you,You are invited to come and get to knowBishop Daniel on Thursday, October 22nd,when he visits St. Paul Lutheran Church forthe Bishop’s Fall Conference Visit. Dinnerwill be at 6pm with a program to follow.Bishop Daniel G. Beaudoin12
