IntroductionPursuant to Section 4 of the Illinois Solid Waste Management Act, the Illinois EnvironmentalProtection Agency (Illinois EPA) has prepared this report reflecting the available disposalcapacity of permitted landfills in Illinois and the estimated life expectancy of those landfills. Thisreport identifies the cumulative remaining disposal capacity and landfill life expectancy for theState as a whole, for each of the seven Illinois EPA administrative regions of the State, and foreach individual active permitted landfill. The data contained in this report is based uponinformation each permitted landfill is required to report to the Illinois EPA annually; specificallythe volume of solid waste accepted by a landfill during the calendar year and the remainingdisposal capacity of the landfill as of January 1 of the following year. For this report, theprojected life expectancy of each landfill is determined by dividing the landfill's reporteddisposal capacity by the landfill’s average annual disposal rate for the last five years.Interactive Landfill Capacity and Life Expectancy MapIllinois EPA has developed an Interactive Map for landfill Capacity and Life Expectancy. The map can befound at: 327813aa4695f58c95c.You may choose a Region in the Bookmark Section for a visual representation of the data summarizedin the Illinois Landfill Capacity Disposal Report. Users can switch between Capacity and Life Expectancydata by using the Layers section below the map.1

Permitted Statewide Disposal CapacityDuring calendar year 2019, Illinois' 37 permitted landfills reported receiving a total of 63,433,903 cubicyards of solid waste. These landfills have a remaining combined available disposal capacity of1,232,353,880 cubic yards. At the average disposal rate over the past five years, these landfills willhave a cumulative life expectancy of approximately 24.5 years. However, cumulative landfill capacityand life expectancy may vary year-to-year based on a number of factors, including waste disposalrates, landfill expansion, and the construction of new landfills.2

Landfill Capacity and Disposal Volume by RegionThe Illinois EPA divides the State into seven administrative regions. These regions have variousnumbers of landfills, disposal rates, landfill capacities, and landfill life expectancies. The table identifiesthis information on a regional basis.Regional and Statewide TotalsGeographic stern ago ria/Quad Cities7150,475,2844,924,0124,972,81630.264East Central Illinois6174,696,4175,914,8136,204,77128.165West Central 02,06648.221,232,353,880 63,433,90350,355,82224.47RegionNumber67TotalSt. Louis MetroEastSouthern Illinois373
