GO TOOLSBOOKS, SOFTWARE & HARDWAREDIGITIZED “GO REVIEW”TROVE NOW AVAILABLEMay 14, 2010A digitized version of Go Review, one of the very first English go publications, is now available. Go Reviewwas published monthly by the NihonKi-in from January 1961 to March1973, then quarterly through Spring1977. The 160 issues — comprising some 15,000 pages – are available on three DVDs ( 75 each) fromKunaki. The early issues on disks 1and 2 — 60 issues each, from January 1961 through December 1965and January 1966 through December 1970 — “represent the haltingattempts of the Japanese go world in the early60s to start spreading the game internationally,”reports Bob Myers of Kiseido Digital on GoDiscussions. “The content is basic and written in poorEnglish. However, it’s still very interesting. Thereare more handicap games (often with famousJapanese pros) than tournament games, apparentlyin the belief that pro-pro games might be too hardfor foreigners to understand. There’s lots of go news, including about foreignerswe all know well now. Thereare great teaching series bybig names. Even the adsfrom big Japanese companies(which are included in thePDFs) are interesting.” Disk3, — 40 issues from January1971 through Spring 1977— contains the last few yearsof monthlies and then the“meatier quarterly issues,”which are roughly equivalentto Go World (which succeeded Go Review) in terms ofquality and content. A sampleof the June 1963 issue of Go Review is availablefor download at Kiseido Digital. NOTE: Disc 1is shown as “Go Review Archive”, and the DVDcover art could mistakenly imply that this itemcontains all three discs. It does not. This item isDisc 1, and contains only the first 60 issues.- includes reporting by Sensei’s Libraryhttp://www.kiseidodigital.com/DAILY E-JOURNAL NOW AVAILABLEMay 10, 2010Many of the stories in the weeklyE-Journal originally appeared in ourdaily edition; if you’d like to get thelatest world go news in brief clickable stories linked to complete reports on the AGA’s website, simply click on the “updatemy profile” link at the bottom of the E-Journal and choose the daily edition (you can switchback and forth at any time). GO TOOLSBOOKS, SOFTWARE & HARDWAREGO REVIEW: The Go ConsultantsMay 25, 2010The Go Consultants documents a unique event ingo history, Kitani Minoru and Go Seigen’s 193435 consultation game against their teachers Suzuki Tamejiroand Segoe Kensaku.Authors JohnFairbairn andT Mark Hallprovide flyon-the-wallobservationsof what eachside wasthinking atevery stageof the contest, doing anexcellent jobof describingthe characters and putting their status into contextfor 21st-century readers. In fact the story is relatedso naturally that The Go Consultants reads like ahard-to-put-down novel, complete with amusinganecdotes as well as keen commentary on the actual progress of the game. It’s like a show-withina-show. On top of the pure entertainment value ofthe story, I found it insightful to learn how professional players approach serious games and a reliefto discover that even professionals can be takenby surprise. I have always appreciated tightlydecided games more than landslides, because theytend to exemplify the ideal of ‘balanced play’,and without giving away the ending, this gamewas very closely fought indeed. Whether you’rea novice historian or an obsessive student of go,you won’t find a more thorough deconstructionof a professional game-in-progress. As a bonus, the book includes the players’ own post-mortemanalyses. 18 from Slate & Shellhttp://www.slateandshell.com/- adapted from Tyler Reynolds’ Go For All blogIGOWIN BRINGS “MANY FACES” TO IPHONE,IPOD & IPADJune 5, 2010The new Igowin Pro brings the features of “The Many Faces of Go”to the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. GO TOOLSBOOKS, SOFTWARE & HARDWARENEW IN PRINT 2010 (PART 1)Classic GamesAugust 28, 2010by Roy LairdStrolling through the vendor area at thisyear’s U.S. Go Congress, I realized that it’stime for some updates on what’s happeningrecently in the small but active world of gopublishing. The first thing I noticed was thatit’s been a busy year for GoGoD co-authorJohn Fairbairn, who has embarked on anambitious project with his publisher, Slateand Shell: a series of books on the ten-gamematches Go Seigen played when he wasat the top of the go world. Drawing on multipleoriginal sources, each book provides extensivehistorical material, and integrates game commentary from a variety of sources. Kamakura, covering Go’s first matchup during WW II with KitaniMinoru, came out last spring. It was followed byFinal Summit, describing the last jubango, againstNEW IN PRINT 2010 (PART II)A Beginner’s BonanzaSeptember 6, 2010The past year has produced a notable bumpercrop of books for beginners and newer players —the so-called DDK (double-digit kyu) range. Jonathan Hop, a 3D amateur, published So You WantTo Play Go?, a three-volume series available onAmazon that aims to give the reader the knowledge to improve ten ranks per book; if it works,at the end you’ll be ready to aim at shodan. ClickVolume One, Volume Two and Volume Three tolearn more about each book. 21st Century Badukfor Beginners is the latest offering from Sungrae Kim, the author of several other works in thegrowing number of English-language works fromKorean publishers. Some of these early effortssuffered somewhat from clumsy English, butDiana Koszegi 3P helped with this translation,802010 AMERICAN GO YEARBOOKTakagawa Shukaku in1955-56. Then came9-Dan Showdown, focusing on two ten-gamematches and two shorterencounters with withFuijisawa Kuranosuke(later Fujisawa Hosai),one of the great players ofthe 1940′s and 1950′s. Ina change of pace, Fairbairn also translated TheGo Consultants, in whichKitani and Seigen teamup against Segoe Kensakuand Suzuki Tamjiro for a “consultation game.” Inspired by a similar practice among Western chessmasters, in a “consultation game” the two-playerteams discuss the game while it is in progress.Stay tuned — more exciting titles are on the way!http://www.slateandshell.com/suiting it more fully to the idioms of the Englishlanguage. GO TOOLSBOOKS, SOFTWARE & HARDWARENEW IN PRINT 2010 (PART III)Six More ImportantNew WorksSeptember 20, 2010First off, Slate and Shell addedthree more important titles totheir catalog this year. Magic OnThe First Line is a compendiumof eponymous oddities that onlythe great Nakayama could havecome up with. In UnderstandingDan Level Play, Yuan Zhou 7dcontinues his popular “Understanding . . . ” series by analyzinghis own games as the U.S. representative in the 2009 Korea PrimeMinister’s Cup. And with NewMoves, Slate and Shell adds animportant new author to its roster— Alexander Dinerchtein, a 3P inthe Korean system, better knownas “breakfast” on KGS. By “newmoves”, the author seems tomean trick plays. Dinerchtein charges 3- 5 pertrick on his hamete.net site — by that measure, 25plays for 18 is quite a bargain. The burgeoning Korean English-languagepublishing industry hasproduced a full thirtytitles titles in the pastfew years, all of whichare available from Yutopian. Now comes thefirst extended attemptto discuss haengma, aKorean construct thatis difficult to translate, but has somethingto do with the natural flow of the game.Janice Kim called it “The Way of The MovingHorse.” This Is Haengma by Sung-rae Kim andSung Ki-Chang, and Master ofHaengma Sung-ho Beck, try toexplain this elusive way of understanding the game. And theKorean titles keep on coming.I’m on Yutopian’s “sendme-everything-as-soon-asthe-ink-dries” list, so a fewweeks after the Congress, I gotmy copy of 21st Century NewOpenings, Volume 2, also bySung-rae Kim. It’s so new it’snot even listed on the Yutopiansite yet, but it looks good.Kim continues his discussionof modern changes in openingstrategy, with extensive discussion of the mini-Chinese opening and others. Now that komiis 7.5 points, some pros feel thatBlack has to play more aggressively, making many of theestablished openings obsolete. This series is some of the fruit of that thinking.Possibly a must for the serious competitor. GO TOOLSBOOKS, SOFTWARE & HARDWARENEW GOGAME VIEWERDEVELOPEDOctober 4, 2010Neil Moffatt reportsthat he’s developed an“HTML5 canvas basedgo game viewer andrudimentary editor.” SaysMoffat, Secretary of theCardiff Go Club in Wales,UK, “It embraces ideassuch as access to key moments in games via a listof clickable position descriptions, and a list of alternative move sequences by description.” The site includes games for beginners, josekis, “guess the next move” and gamecommentaries. In most games, a list of key gamepositions is presented. Click on ‘Black has nowcreated a large moyo’, for example, and you willbe taken you to that exact board position. Problems from all aspects of thegame are organized into one book, designed tohelp kyu-level players discover their strengthsand weaknesses, with suggestions for furtherstudy. Personally, I prefer the Kiseido format, where several problems appear on one page, and you turn the page to see the answers. Herethe answers appear below the problems–cheaters beware! If you have made it solidly intothe SDK range, you should easily solve mostof the problems; but it’s a unique resource foradvanced beginners. I’ve been playing a friendsome nine-stone games, and I’m putting it onhis Christmas list. http://www.tuttlepublishing.com/— Roy Laird
