Notable Personalities fromKDU’s HistorySupreme Court Judge JusticePP SurasenaJudge Preethi Padman Surasena joinedintake 1 of KDA in 1981. He graduatedfrom KDA in 1984, and he becamean Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court ofthe Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lankain the year 1989. In 2005 he earned a LLMfrom Queen Mary and West Field College ofthe University of London. Subsequently, in theyear 2007 he was appointed as a High CourtJudge by HE President, of Sri Lanka.He became the Chairman of the Court ofAppeal in 2018 and Supreme Court judge in2019.Professor Kapila Perera PhDProfessor Kapila Perera joined the Sri Lanka Navy on 1st January 1985 as a Service Cadet ofKDA Intake 2. He became the first officer cadet to be graduated with a first class honoursdegree, thereafter he was privileged to earn a Doctoral degree. Professor Kapila Pereraserved as the Vice Chancellor of Moratuwa University, and currently he serves as theSecretary to the Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka.Admiral Jayanath ColombageAdmiral Colombage served the Sri Lanka Navyfor a period of 36 years and retired as theCommander of the Navy. He holds a PhD fromGeneral Sir John Kotelawala Defence University,Master of Science in Defence and StrategicStudies from Madras University and Master ofArts in International Studies from Kings College,London. His PhD thesis “Asymmetric Warfare atSea; the Case of Sri Lanka” has been publishedby Lambert Academic Publishing in Germany.Admiral, Professor Jayanath Colombagecurrently serves as the Secretary to the Ministryof Foreign Affairs, Sri Lanka.Captain (Dr.) Madhura De AlwisMajor General KRP RowelMajor General Renuka Rowel commenced his military career byjoining the KDA Intake 2 as a service cadet. He has held a number ofkey appointments in command, staff and instructor fields in theArmy. His commands include Infantry Brigade commander, SignalBrigade Commander and Infantry Division Commander. He has alsobeen a Colonel General Staff, Brigadier General Staff and a memberof Directing Staff at Army Command and Staff college. He is arecipient of the Rana Wicrama medal for gallantry.KDU Prospectus 202104Captain (Dr) Madhura De Alwis achieved the significantlandmark of being the first ever medical student of KDU tobe qualified as Doctor of Medicine (MD). He joined KDU inthe year 2009 as an Officer Cadet of Intake 27. He was anoutstanding Officer Cadet who balanced military trainingwith education tremendously well.

UNIVERSITYHOSPITALKDU Prospectus 202112The 814 bed university hospital of KDU comprises of ultra-modern facilities with cuttingedge technology to provide round-the-clock emergency and trauma care and specializedtreatment of patients with diseases of all branches of medicine such as surgery,paediatrics and obstetrics, gynaecology and other medical and surgical specialties.The paying section of the hospital includes 50 paying beds and 6 suites with 120consultation rooms for private consultation facilities. It also comprises of astate-of-the-art auditorium equipped with all modern facilities, which is an ideal venuefor national and international conferences and seminars. The hospital also provides idealteaching facilities enabling live audio and video demonstrations of surgical and otherclinical procedures for Medical Students.

SOUTHERNCAMPUSKDU envisioned broadening its network back in the year2015 by establishing campuses in the peripheral Southand the North. Thus, when the opportunity arose forcommencing a University Village in the South, KDU tookup the brave challenge of establishing a fully-fledgedcampus from scratch on a 140-acre virgin land extentvested in it by the government.When completed, the Southern Campus emerged as aunique and picturesque campus surrounded by a naturalforest coverage, scenic lakes, and a breathtaking horizonseen from its building tops.With the recently established Hambanthota Port, MattalaInternational Airport and the connectivity to the capitalthrough the Southern Expressway, the Southern Campuswill be an ideal university campus for both local andforeign students reading for their degrees.Today, the Southern Campus comprises of the Faculty ofComputing and the Faculty of Built Environment andSpatial Sciences, offering several much sought afterdegree programmes. It is currently the home forapproximately one hundred students, housed in hostelsprovided by the university. Student Life at KDUClub ActivitiesClub activities are an integral and interesting part of KDU student life, and they signify the holistic approach adopted byKDU in its higher educational model. Various clubs have been formed, and they are run by students themselves underguidance and supervision. These student-preferred activities inculcate in them the much needed team spirit,leadership traits and brotherhood among them. These clubs are also a haven for identifying and refining the hiddentalents of KDU undergraduates. They help develop soft skills in students essential for their overall personality growth.Rotaract ClubThe Rotaract Club of KDU was inaugurated and charted in 2013, and, as per the vision of the Vice Chancellor,the club prioritises conducting service projects which would benefit the immediate surrounding community ofthe University and the University itself.
