www.gabicci.comTHE STYLECOUNCILLORSBY IAIN (TSC) MUNNIn the Summer of 2014, a full 25 years afterThe Style Council’s (TSC) much digested finalconcert at The Royal Albert Hall, the aptlynamed Style Councillors quietly appeared onstage in Brentwood. They were TSC’s firstdedicated tribute act and it is fair to say in the40 gigs since, have blown away any pre-showdoubters in attendance. They look the parttoo, most notably around the successful 1985era of TSC blazers, college scarfs, white Levi’sand Delicious Junction loafers.Any 10 piece band who is prepared to movefrom 23 songs in their repertoire from thatfirst gig to 45 in under 3 years is dedicated, passionate, and ‘even well bloody dressed.’They sound very true to the originals with afull brass section and a recent percussionistadds extra depth to their set list.As you would expect they cover all thehits; My Ever Changing Moods, Shout ToThe Top, Speak Like A Child, Walls ComeTumbling Down, Long Hot Summer, Big BossGroove, Money-Go-Round and have beenknown to add in well loved B-Sides such asThe Piccadilly Trail, Spin Drifting, The ParisMatch & Headstart For Happiness. Thenadd in The Style Council live only songs, UpFor Grabs, Hanging Onto A Memory, OneNation Under A Groove and Meeting (Up)Over Yonder and you can see why they havegone from strength to strength, drawing alot of interest and some well known facesinto the crowd. With the 100 Club selling out an astonishing7 weeks in advance and gigs being pencilledin across the UK and Europe, 2017 looks setto be another step-up for ‘probably the best(tribute) band in the world.’Get on up!Iain MunnThe Style Council archivist and author of MrCool’s Dream, The Complete History of TheStyle Council (Wholepoint Publications).Facebook: gabicci 1973Twitter: @gabicci 1973Instagram: gabicci 1973ALL IN GOOD TIME 5 SPRING/SUMMER 20175

DEL CAUGHT UP WITH DARREN FLETCHER OFTHE STYLE COUNCILLORS, WHO AS A STYLECOUNCIL TRIBUTE BAND HAVE BEEN SELLINGOUT SHOWS ALL OVER THE UK RECENTLY. OURDRINK OF CHOICE? A CAPPUCCINO NATURALLYDel: Hello Darren, thanks for your time. Whatmusic you listening to when growing up?DF: My Dad had a pretty diverse taste inmusic, so early on I became pretty familiarwith everything from The Beatles, TheStones & Simon & Garfunkel to BarbaraStreisand, Johnny Cash & Frankie Laine.‘From the Jam’ were a cover band or not, someone asked why there were no TSCtributes. When the answer came back that itwas far too difficult I saw that as a challengeand obviously a love of the music had a greatdeal to do with it too.It wasn’t really until about late ’78 - Iwould have been about 12 - when theMod revival was in full swing that a palof mine left a cassette tape at my housethat had a recording of ‘Down in the tubestation at midnight’ on it. That song madea huge impression on me - it soundedjust how I thought music should sound, later on I became a big fan of The Jam andbegan collecting their records - I lovedthe anticipation of new releases in thosedays, the album sleeves were works of artthemselves. I still miss that today.Del: I’m guessing you were a fan of TheStyle Council as a record buyer?DF: Yes indeed I was, I have a nice collection.I was a relative latecomer to the “Jam Army’but I followed The Style Council for thewhole journey. Again I thought the recordsleeves were fantastic (with one possibleexception!)Del: (Orange anyone?) Why did choose theStyle Council to cover as a band?DF: Interesting story here, I stumbled acrossa FB post where someone was asking whothe best Jam tribute band were. After theusual crowd had debated to death whether6Del: Where did you find the rest of the band?DF: I’ve known Al Carter on bass for over 30years, Steve Hayes is a personal friend andplayed in a number of bands with me over theyears and in fact formed the band with meover a shandy or two one evening, Brendanon drums is a local lad who responded toan Advert in the press, Keith on piano wasintroduced to me by a mutual friend andDani was introduced to us by Dave Welton(Trombone). The brass guys were a littlemore difficult to find, having searched highand low for suitable players and drawinga blank my wife suggested trying a localwoodwind and brass instrument shop tosee if they had any contacts - they did! TrevIrving, Tony Ardin and Dave Welton gotin touch and after years on the road withBad Manners fancied something a littleless strenuous shall we say! More recentlywe have augmented the line up with theexcellent Dan Mullins on percussion, whichadds another dimension to our sound.Del: How do you pick which songs make upthe set list?Del: We’ve noticed you have been doingmore gigs recently, so is demand growing forThe Style Councillors?DF: I think so, our London shows are sellingout pretty quickly now and places likeManchester & Birmingham give us a fantasticreception and the crowds are growing. Alsofestival bookings are picking up which isgreat and engagements are starting to comein from abroad so quite exciting for us.DF: There are songs which every TSCfan wants to hear such as ‘Walls ComeTumbling Down’ and ‘Shout to the Top’ sothey make up the backbone of the set butI’m a great believer in making sure everyshow is different so we’ll put in popular Bsides or even work different arrangementsof tunes to ensure variety. We do get lotsof requests too so where possible we try toaccommodate those.Del: Is getting the ‘look’ right whenperforming on-stage?ALL IN GOOD TIME 5 SPRING/SUMMER 2017DF: We do try. Steve has a nice line in ‘Mick’Jackets & Dani in particular goes to greatlengths to get Dee’s look correct. Periodcorrect instruments also play a big part, asthe sound is as important as the look I think.Del: I’m guessing Iain ‘Mr. Style Council’Munn has given you some advice of the bandover the yearsDF: Yes Iain has helped us a great deal withdetail, photos, old set lists etc. and he keepsa painfully accurate catalogue of the venueswe have played and the songs we play atthem too!Del: What plans have you got for the bandin 2017?DF: More of the same really Del, weare playing some lovely venues to veryappreciative audiences and have met somewonderful people at our shows includingAnn & Nicky Weller, what more could youwant? Unless of course The Guv’nor fancieda guest spot but I can’t see that happeningany time soon :-)Del. Finally, what are your favourite stylesfrom Delicious Junction?DF: I love the Upsetter Brogue and the RudeBoy Loafer - classic designs coupled withfantastic quality!Del: Thanks Darren, stylish to the endALL IN GOOD TIME 5 SPRING/SUMMER 20177

CONNECTINGWITH CONNETTMR. DARRON J CONNETT HAS BEEN PART OFDELICIOUS JUNCTION FROM OUR FIRST DAY ANDIS SEEN AS VERY MUCH THE ‘SHOE AMBASSADOR’OF OUR BRAND. OVER A GLASS OF TAP WATERAND A DRY BISCUIT WE CAUGHT UP WITH WHATIS IN STORE FOR HIM IN 2017DJC: 2017 one-way or another is shaping upto be an interesting year. My first official soloalbum has been written and re-written until Iwas 100% happy with the songs. They are all connected in some way and takeon the subject of trying to succeed in life nomatter what fight you choose to take on. It’snot necessarily about my personal struggleto succeed in the music world but more ofa universal slant on people’s struggles ingeneral and ever the optimist it’s not on anegative vibe. It’s more of a positive messagebasically saying never give up your dream nomatter who or what gets in your way. We’re going to record thirteen songs and putmaybe eleven on the album with the othertwo for later singles. For this album, I’m going to go down thecrowd funding route as that’s the way itsgone to get something done these days.I must admit I’m very apprehensive aboutthat as the reality is no one could beinterested in what I do, but I guess only timewill tell on that.8ALL IN GOOD TIME 5 SPRING/SUMMER 2017But, one way or another the album will berecorded and released, no matter what.I have to say though this probably my bestbatch of songs ever and I spent most of2016 crafting them with the help of PaulHancock, who has helped me bring themto life, so hopefully along with the subjectmatter, it’ll connect. It looks amazing and the whole idea behind itwas creating my ultimate shoe. I looked backover all the shoes I’ve loved and made a sortof highbred of those. It has a real crepe sole with a soft suedeupper, leather detailing complete with apersonalised brogue design that I’m sure allour modernist friends will love.So far in my career, the only song that I’d saythat was a complete DJC song is ‘Make Minea Double’ which was on my Black Noire EPfrom 2015. That one I’m really proud of.We chose three colour ways: Black, brownand an ice white with tan detailing to mix itup a bit, so there’s something for everyone.I was over the moon to be asked to do this.Expect a late summer 2017 release forthe album.I’m very proud of my involvement over yearswith the Delicious Junction family brand asthey’ve been very loyal to me and in turn, meto them and long may that continue.I’m also delighted with the new ‘CONNETT’shoe which I designed in collaboration withyou at Delicious Junction and which will hitthe shops, and the new range, this year. Thanks Darron. Your round I’m so pleased on how it’s turned out frommy rough sketches, to the prototype, to thefinal product.ALL IN GOOD TIME 5 SPRING/SUMMER 20179

So then Somerset House camealong and it was all systems go. Liverpoolwas a different project altogether though. We were able to use loads more archive, infact more like 5,000 objects. A huge project.Del: Was it fun looking through the archive?NW: It was great fun going through allthe archive and very therapeutic too. Mumand me spent 3 days going through hergarage and through my dad’s items. Thankgoodness my mum is also a magpie, as shehad kept absolutely everything!Del: I guess it was nice to pay tribute to yourmum and dad in the shows?NW: It was really nice to pay tribute tomum and dad. We didn’t have the room inSomerset House to make more of my dad’sdocumentary, but in Liverpool there wasa whole room dedicated to him. My mumloved coming to Liverpool and talking to allthe fans and serving teas in The Jam cafe.A lot of fun.Del: What were your highlights over thepast two years?NW: It has to be the two major exhibitionsthat we managed to pull off. A real teameffort though, Russell Reader, Den Davis, and Tory Turk at the London show. So manypeople to thank that made it all possible, butwe are very proud of what we have achievedwith the exhibitions, as we had never doneanything like this.Del: Has it been nice to reconnect with thefans of the band?18ALL IN GOOD TIME 5 SPRING/SUMMER 2017ALL IN GOOD TIME 5 SPRING/SUMMER 201719

NW: It has been great to connect with thefans, they are a great bunch. I’m amazed howfar some of them travelled. We have metsome lovely people over the last couple ofyears and some of those friendships areon going.Del: What did your mum make of it all?NW: Mum loved it. She was really hands ontoo. We did a couple of ‘Q&As’ which werea lot of funDel: What did you enjoy most? Londonor Liverpool?NW: London was amazing, such a buzz aswe hadn’t done anything like that before andsuch a prestigious venue we couldn’t haveasked for more. But by the time we got toLiverpool, we were in charge of the wholebuild and set up and well, that was somethingelse, plus it was 10 times the size! We onlyactually had 6 weeks to get the design andbuild together before opened and we were amuch smaller team and a smaller budget thenLondon, so we were learning as we wentalong. I wish we had been able to bring thatshow to London Del: Were you tempted to another show?Abroad possibly?NW: We would love to do another showhere or abroad, but it’s all a matter of moneyand at the moment we haven’t gotany sponsors?Del: Any future plans you can tellour readers about?NW: We are currently working ona new book in the series ‘Growing upwith Punk’ as its 40 years since 1977and we are looking to releasethis summer Del; Finally, before I let you go.What are your favourite DeliciousJunction shoes?NW: I love the womans bowling shoes!!20ALL IN GOOD TIME 5 SPRING/SUMMER 201721

The origin of the wordcan be traced back to Gaelic and is thoughtto have entered the English language in thelate 16th century. Traditionally it was a shoemade of multi-layer pieces of leather withdecorative punching (“broguing”) thoughtto have allowed water to pass through thesesturdy brutes, as they were functional itemsused for outdoor terrain back in the day.Why do we love a Brogue? How are they made?Highly polished leathers with contrast lacesor tonal laces we don’t really mind. They arefunctional and smart; yet work splendidlywith denim and throw in a turn-up now weare talking! Our brogues are Goodyear welted takingaround 8 weeks to produce with upwards of200 procedures. It’s one of the oldest andwisest of footwear constructions.A strip of leather (known as the Welt) issewn around the bottom of the upper andthe insole. Jacquie is well known on the sceneand made me feel incredibly welcome. It wasa brilliant night and got me started onthe decks.Del: What 5 tunes top your set list and why?Which one gets the floor going the most?KD: MVP’s ‘Turning my heartbeat up’Mickey Lee Lanes’ ‘Hey Sah-Lo-Ney’ NolanPorter ‘if I could only be sure’; Franki Valli‘The Night’; Shirley Ellis ‘Soul Time’: Theseare all sure fired floor fillers and all great intheir own ways.Del: What is your ultimate Northern Soultrack? Why is it so dear to your heart?KD: Nolan Porter ‘ If I could only be sure’ –This is the first proper Northern Soul track Iheard and subsequently got me interested in24the Northern Soul scene. It’s a beautiful songand you can’t help but fall in love with it.Del: What bands inspired and engaged youwhen growing up?KD: There are so many! I’m a huge Bowiefan, and ‘The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust’was a massive and influential part of myyouth. I loved soul music from the start, anddiscovered Atlantic Soul at boarding school.I love Jazz and the Blues, Bobby Bland beingone of my Blues heroes. I am also a hardcoreWeller fan and I listen to The Jam, StyleCouncil and his solo material. The SmallFaces, Lovin’ Spoonful, etc. The list goes on!Del: First and last – what band did you firstsee live and which was your last live gig?KD: I can’t actually remember who wasmy first live band; I was quite late into thegigging scene as I was a young mum of 2boys so I started in the ‘90’s. I think it wasPrimal Scream, which isn’t too shabby fora premier gig! The last was The Who inSheffield – I took my youngest son to that.Coincidentally, I saw The Who back in2002, and I took my eldest son to that too –I am proud that their first ever gigs with mewere The Who.Del: Who do you listen to in 2017? Anycurrent band or performer that gets yourears tingly and feet tapping?KD: To be honest there is nothing ‘new’that truly interests me. I hate to sound likean old fart, but it’s the actual truth. I reallyfeel as though there is nothing amazinglike there was in the 90’s. Remember whenOasis smashed onto our screens and OceanColour Scene? There was so much new talentaround then. I’m afraid, I am still lookingtowards veterans such as Paul Weller whoincidentally, still manages to bring brilliantnew music to the table – its incredible. I sawhim about a month ago in Leicester and heand his amazing band smashed it – I still findwatching him as exciting as the first time Iever saw him. I’m sounding like a super fanhere – I’m not quite a super fan, but I’m justtrying to get my point across. So in answerto your question- Nope- no current band orperformer that gets my foot tapping. You askafter my ears as for my ears tingling? WellI’m a little deaf as it is, and thankful for thatKD: I have always enjoyed looking different, sharp and precise in how I dress. I guessmodels such as Peggy Moffitt and EdieSedgwick have inspired me along the way.We should be free to make our own look aswell and not be overly constrained by the“Modette” tag.Del: Any tips for the MODern woman inwhere or how to get the right clothes andcreate your look?KD: I like to mix it up with vintage andnew. Fred Perry is always a great startingpoint and then I buy from vintage shops andon-line. My friends are great at keeping aneye out for any interesting pieces. Don’t befrightened to have a go and create your ownstyle; it’s best not to take yourselftoo seriously.Del: Your involvement with DeliciousJunction over recent years has developedfrom your love of great footwear anyparticular styles that you can personallyrecommend?KD: I Love the Sedgwick brogues and wearthem all the time; versatile for differentoutfits and occasions. My current favouriteis the Watts Bowling shoes in white leatherwith a British racing green trim a trulygreat statement shoe and ideal for dancing in!Del: And finally any ideas on what newstyles you think we should release next, within the DJ women’s collection?KD: I do love a tassel loafer and enjoywearing the Rude Boy on the crepe solebut maybe its time for a college style loafer, perhaps a slimmer silhouette withrounded toe. Many thanks for your time and ideas Katie I see your glass needs topping up ALL IN GOOD TIME 5 SPRING/SUMMER 201725
