community profileAlthough the Township's rate of growth hasaccelerated significantly since 1990, efforts of theHistoric District commission have been made topreserve the rural feeling of the area.Oakland Township is situated in OaklandCounty in the Detroit metropolitan communityof Southeast Michigan. It covers 36 sq. miles andhas the distinction of being one of the state's oldesttownships. A defining characteristic of thetownship is the abundance of inland lakes, streams, and wetlands which offer excellentrecreational destinations, residential locationsand wildlife habitat.Together, Rochester and Rochester Hills, adjacentcities to Oakland Township, hold a novel position inthe history and economic development of OaklandCounty, Michigan. This area has the second highestper capita income in the nation for counties withover one million people. This is one of the reasonsOakland County holds the coveted “Triple A” bondrating by both Standard and Poors and Moody’s.Early settlers also found the geography appealingin 1824 when the first parcels of land werepurchased. Schools were built in 1827. Goodisonbecame the heart of the community when a postoffice was established in 1874. Today, you willfind the municipal offices still located inhistoric Goodison. The area is home to the DaimlerChryslerCorporation North American Headquarters andLeader Dogs for the Blind.2
