Drawing in Pen & Ink: Brushes, Washes & ColorAdrienne HodgeInk washes and watercolor or gouache (a more opaquewatercolor paint) can be highly effective in transformingsimple pen & ink drawings into multi-media masterpieces.This class is designed for students who have some basic ormore intermediate drawing skills and would like to knowmore about the process, materials and techniques of creatingmemorable drawings using pens, brushes, ink washes, andcolor. We will cover all of the following skill sets in this class:color mixing and theory, creating and layering ink and colorwashes, controlling a paintbrush, and sharpening existingdrawing skills. No experience with pen & ink drawingrequired.CLASS IN 8E.SUPPLIES Supplies for the first day of class: Optional Supplies Other colors of India Ink pens or other colors of bottledIndia ink.Any other types of inks you’d like to experiment with likecalligraphy ink or walnut ink (used for calligraphy andpreferred by the instructor for ink washes when addingsepia color)A roll of paper towels.Printed reference images.Supply Store SuggestionsDick Blick online, Office Max, Office DepotJerry’s Artarama, Hobby Lobby or MichaelsStudents must bring provide their own supplies.Other supplies may be added as the course progresses, assuggested by the instructor.Please keep your receipts in case the class is cancelled orto return unused supplies. Set of 4 Faber-Castell brand India Ink pens in black (pensmust be India ink, as it will not bleed when water isadded to it, make sure to get 3 sizes (Small, Medium &Brush size) if not purchasing the set)A small bottle of black India ink.5-6 watercolor brushes of decent quality (try to find atleast one extra fine point brush with a size listed “round0” or “round liner”, the smaller the better. Then choosesome other brushes of various sizes and shapes—bothround and flat)1-2 cups for water2-3 plastic palette trays (make sure to get at least oneround tray with wells to be used for ink washes—theseare usually only 1 each!)Choose EITHER watercolor or gouache for the class(instructor recommends gouache for its ability to beopaque like ink and how it generally cooperates with inkwashes when layering).--When purchasing gouache--get a basic set of 5 colors ofgouache (as they are likely to be better quality than thecheaper sets with many premixed colors and we will bepracticing color mixing and theory). (M. Graham orHolbein are good brands)If choosing a watercolor set, you are likely to find decentset of reasonable price with 12 colors. Try to find a setthat is not cheapest available, but not the most expensiveeither. (Grumbacher or Holbein are good brands)A multi-media or watercolor paper sketchbook.Recommended: 9” x 12” or 11” x 14”, but feel free to geta smaller one if you prefer miniature or detail works!(again, try to find a mid-range /quality sketchbook)2-3 pencils for sketching

ATTENDANCE & STUDIO ACCESS Program attendance is the responsibility of the participant.Failure to attend does not entitle a participant to a transfer or arefund. (See Enrollment Policies)Due to safety, CHILDREN, FRIENDS, and PETS (except official,certified assistance animals) ARE NOT ALLOWED in the classesor open studio hours.The studio/classroom is only open and available to registeredstudents during their registered class time.The studio cannot be used without supervision.If you arrive early and another class (not your class) is in session, please do not enter the studio out of courtesy for studentsthat have paid for their time in class. Questions about classtimes can be directed to the registration office, program specialist, class brochure or found online.Students age 15-17 years may register for classes with the approval of the Arts School Administration and must have aparent/guardian sign a waiver release form.STUDIO CLEAN UPPlease keep the studio clean and safe for everyone! Students areresponsible for cleaning their area and common areas. Turn off all electrical equipment such as lights and air conditioners. Please clean and return all items to their original storage area. The instructor is responsible for making sure the room is in anorderly manner upon conclusion of the class. Please be considerate of closing hours and allow time for cleanup. No spray fixatives or other aerosol chemicals are allowedin the building.MODEL When a nude model is used in the studio, a screen must beused to block the eyesight from a person in the hallway.Students under 18 must have written approval from their parents if enrolled in a class with a nude model.PERSONAL CAUTION & SAFETYPERSONAL BELONGINGS: DO NOT bring valuable items to class. DO NOT leave valuable items exposed in plain site in your vehicle.Keep handbag and backpack and supplies near your workstation.The City of Austin, Parks and Recreation Department, and DoughertyArts Center staff is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please reportloss or theft to a staff member.FOOD & DRINKS: are not allowed in the studio. Students and instructors mayeat and drink in the lobby. Vending machinesCONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOLThe studio/classroom environment contains potentially dangerousmaterials and equipment. DAC students, staff, instructors and contractors should not consume alcohol before or during class. Possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibitedin all areas of the Dougherty Arts Center except the Julia C.Butridge Gallery under special circumstances. Alcohol will onlybe available in the Gallery if the renter or organization hostingthe event provides alcohol for consumption to the general public; has provided liability insurance and an alcohol license; andthe Parks Department Director has given approval. No alcohol may be taken from the gallery into the studio/classroom or other areas of the Dougherty Arts Center. Students should not drink alcohol at the reception and return tothe classroom. If alcohol is consumed the student will be askedto leave and no refunds will be given.
