I had rather be a doorkeeper in thehouse of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness” – Psalm 84:10“Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist State Ushers/Nurses MinistryRuby “Chris” Dudley, President8

The National Baptist Laymen’s Regional Workshop concept began as a vision fromGod to Walter Cade, Jr. at the start of his presidency at his election as the laymenpresident at the National Baptist Convention’s annual session in Cleveland, Ohio in 1971.Walter Cade, Jr. desired to involve more men in the national movement. To get moremen to come to the national meetings, he knew he must get them familiar with thenational work. Therefore, President Cade introduced the regional concept. A mininational meeting held on weekends in cities within driving distance of laymen, laywomen, junior laymen and pastors. These meetings were called workshops with the primary objective of fellowship amongthe delegates and to promote the work and ministries of the National Baptist Laymen.Danny Williams of Denver, Colorado was the state president of the Colorado laymen. Hesaw President Cade’s vision and played a vital role in helping to implement the firstregional workshop. The first workshop was held in Denver, Colorado in 1971 between laymen of Kansas andColorado. In 1974 the states that came together for a regional were Kansas, New Mexico,Colorado and Arizona. The years 1975 through 1987 saw God sent growth as the laymenteams from Kansas traveled to various states to encourage laymen participation andpromote the regional concept.Initially as states joined together for regional workshops they called themselves “ThreeStates”, “Four States” or “Five States”, and eventually “Midwest”, “Far west” and “GreatLakes”, etc. to reflect the part of the country. Some of the first classes taught were,“Stewards of Tithing”, “Bible Doctrine”, “Young Men’s Work”, and “The Laymen’sProgram.”The National Baptist Laymen’s Regional Workshops are under the auspices of theNational Baptist Laymen’s Movement governing body. A regional coordinator isappointed and assigned by the president to give guidance in all aspects of the regionalprogram. On January 21, 1997 at a special meeting held at the Fifth Street Avenue Baptist Church inNashville, Tennessee during the annual Winter Board meeting, President Jerry Gash, onthe recommendation of Billy Campbell named all regional workshops the “Walter Cade,Jr.” regional workshops.Walter Cade’s vision has continued to thrive and grow under the ongoing leadership ofsubsequent presidents Jerry Gash, Deacon Harold Simmons and hard working othersthroughout this movement.9
