SKF ConCentra– a truly innovative concentriclocking technologySKF ConCentra ball bearing units are basedon the reliable, proven design of the SKFSY series plummer block housing a 62 series deep groove ball bearing a completely new ConCentra stepped sleevedeveloped by SKF.The housings are coated with epoxy paint, providing very good corrosion resistance.A solventless rust inhibitor protects blanksurfaces.Fig. 1The stepped sleeve is characterized by itshighly efficient, low cross section design.SKF ConCentra ball bearing units are filledwith a premium bearing grease and aremaintenance-free under normal operatingconditions. These units are provided with agrease nipple so that bearing units operatingunder severe conditions can be relubricated. The plummer (pillow)block housingSKF ConCentra ball bearing units are basedon SKF’s proven plummer block housings(† fig. 1) in the SY 5(00) M series for metric shafts the SY 5(00) U/AH series for inch shafts. The housings are made from grey cast iron. They have a concave sphered bore and can, together with the incorporated bearing, accommodate initial misalignment. The attachment holes cast in the base areoblong to easily and accurately align the bearing units and shaft.Housings in the SY 5(00) U/AH series forinch shafts feature a solid base. 6107 EN.indd 406-08-16 10.03.45

The deep groove ballbearingThe ConCentra steppedsleeveThe bearings used in SKF ConCentra ballbearing units are based on deep groove ballbearings in the 62 series. These bearingshave a convex sphered outside surface. Theinner ring is extended on both sides and hasa multi-tapered bore († fig. 2).The bearing is sealed on both sides with thehighly-efficient SKF “Superagriseal”, whichis complemented by flingers to considerablyenhance the sealing effect without increasingfriction. It is filled with a premium grease witha lithium-calcium thickener that fills between25 and 35 % of the free space in the bearing. If necessary, the bearing unit can be relubricated via a grease nipple in the housing. The ConCentra stepped sleeve, a masterpieceof locking technology, is the real innovationbehind the SKF ConCentra bearing unit(† fig. 3). The locking concept is based ontwo mating surfaces with precision-engineered inclined serrations on their contact surfaces. These mating surfaces respond to axialdisplacement by expanding and contractingevenly around the entire circumference of theshaft. The stepped sleeve is equipped witha mounting and pressure ring († fig. 4).By tightening the grub (set) screws in themounting ring, using the hexagonal key (allenwrench) supplied with each unit, the pressurering forces the inner ring up the inclinedplanes of the stepped sleeve to provide a trueconcentric tight fit on the shaft († fig. 5).SKF ConCentra locking technology enablesa bearing to operate with maximum reliability– improving both function and service life.Prior to installationThe two mating surfaces with precision-engineeredserrations in the bearing bore and on the sleeveoutside diameter are positioned to provide clearancearound the shaftFig. 4Fig. 2AFig. 3During installationThe mating surfaces are axially displaced by tightening the grub screws, which forces the bearing ring toexpand and the sleeve to contract, providing a trueconcentric, tight friction joint with the shaftFig. 5 6107 EN.indd 506-08-16 10.03.49

Selection of a bearing unit sizeThe size of an SKF ConCentra ball bearing unitis initially selected on the basis of the loadswithin the application, the bearing load carrying ability, its calculated life and reliability. Theload carrying ability is expressed by the basicdynamic and basic static load ratings. Thebasic dynamic load ratings are determined inaccordance with the methods described byISO 281:1990 while the basic static load ratings are in accordance with ISO 76:1987.The simpliest method to calculate bearinglife is to use the ISO 281:1990 equation forbasic rating life, which isq C w3L10 –– PzFor ball bearing units operating at constantrotational speed, it may be more convenientto deal with basic rating life expressed inoperating hours, using the equation1 000 000 q C w3L10h ––––––––– — Pz60 nThe life-extending improvements embodiedin SKF ConCentra ball bearing units can bestbe understood by using the SKF rating lifeequationq C w3Lnm a1 aSKF — P zor1 000 000 q C w3Lnmh a1 aSKF –––––––––– — Pz60 nwhereLnm SKF rating life (at 100 – n1) %reliability), millions of revolutionsLnmh SKF rating life (at 100 – n1) %reliability), operating hoursL10 basic rating life (at 90 % reliability),millions of revolutionsL10h basic rating life (at 90 % reliability),operating hoursa1 life adjustment factor for reliability(† table 1)aSKF SKF life modification factor(† diagram 1)C basic dynamic load rating, kNP equivalent dynamic bearing load, kN(† page 17)n rotational speed, r/minThis calculation method, which is in accordance with ISO 281:1990/Amd 2:2000 isbetter able to predict bearing service life. TheaSKF factor represents a very complex relationship between various influencing factors:the fatigue load limit Pu by the ratio Pu/P, thecontamination level by the factor hc and thelubrication conditions by the viscosity ratio k.More detailed information about selection of a bearing unit sizethe fatigue load limit Puthe contamination level hcdetermining the viscosity ratio kallocating a value for the SKF life modification factor aSKFcan be found in the SKF General Catalogue orthe “SKF Interactive Engineering Catalogue”,available on CD-ROM or online atwww.skf.com.Values for the fatigue load limit Pu are provided in the product tables.1)The factor n represents the failure probability, i.e. thedifference between the requisite reliability and 100 % 6107 EN.indd 806-08-16 10.03.59

Design of bearing unitarrangementsAxial displacementSupport surfacesSKF ConCentra ball bearing units can accommodate only limited axial displacementsresulting from thermal expansion of theshaft. The distance between unit positionsshould therefore be short. The units could besupported by resilient sheet metal supportsurfaces or walls to prevent them from beingsubjected to excessive stresses as a result ofthermal elongation of the shaft. To maximize the service life of an SKF ConCentra ball bearing unit, SKF recommendsfinishing support surfaces to a roughnessof Ra 12,5 μm and a flatness that meetsIT7 specifications. For moderate demandsIT8 may be satisfactory.SKF ConCentra ball bearing units aredesigned for loads acting vertically to thehousing base support. If they are subjectedto moderate or heavy loads acting parallel tothe base support, a stop should be provided,or the units should be pinned to their supportsurface. The appropriate positions for thesedowel pins are indicated by dimples in thehousing base of SKF ConCentra units formetric shafts and are listed in table 2.To attach SKF ConCentra plummer blockunits to their base, SKF recommends usinghexagonal socket head cap screws according to EN ISO 4762:1998 with washers toEN ISO 7089:2000 or EN ISO 7090:2000.The combination of a hexagonal sockethead cap screw and a flat washer providesimproved seating on the base support. Thescrew itself has to be located by a springwasher placed between the hexagonal sockethead cap screw and a flat washer († fig. 1).Permissible initial misalignmentSKF ConCentra ball bearing units accommodate initial misalignment between the supportsurfaces up to 5 when relubrication is not required up to 2 when relubrication is required.Additionally, they tolerate operational shaftdeflections up to 3 minutes of arc.Shaft tolerancesSKF ConCentra ball bearing units can be usedwith solid or hollow commercial grade shafts. The diameter tolerances must be kept withinthe limits listed in table 1. However shafts orseatings machined to tolerance h9 and havinga cylindricity tolerance to IT5 will be satisfactory.106107 EN.indd 1006-08-16 10.04.00

Lubrication and maintenanceSKF ConCentra ball bearing units are filledwith a premium, long life grease with a lithiumcalcium thickener that has a NLGI class 2consistency. This grease has good corrosioninhibiting properties, excellent water resistance and will provide long service life undernormal operating conditions. The technicalspecifications for this standard grease arelisted in table 1 and enable maintenance-freeoperation, provided vibration levels are low the loads and speeds are moderate the normal operating temperature isbetween 40 and 55 C.Under more difficult operating conditions,SKF ConCentra ball bearing units may need tobe relubricated in order to realize maximumservice life. Therefore, all units are provided asstandard with a grease nipple. The relubrication intervals depend on many related factorsand can be estimated using the informationprovided in the following section.Diagram 1Service life of the grease fill in SKF ConCentra ball bearing unitsas a function of the operating temperature, C the rotational speed n, r/min the bearing mean diameter dm, mm († table 2) O õ E N the operating temperature, C the rotational speed n, r/min the mean diameter of the insert bearingdm, mm († table 2).The relubrication intervals tf are estimatedvalues, valid for bearing units on horizontal shaftsin stationary machinesin a clean environmentwhen the load ratio C/P 15. on vertical shafts by 50 % at heavier loads, e.g. at load ratio C/P 8,by roughly 50 %. The relubrication intervals tf for SKF ConCentra ball bearing units can be obtained fromdiagram 1 as a function ofThe relubrication interval is defined as thetime period, at the end of which 90 % of thebearing units are still reliably lubricated. Thisrepresents the L10 grease life. When the L10grease life is equivalent to or higher than therating life of the SKF ConCentra ball bearingunit, the unit is considered to be lubricated forlife and relubrication is not required. The relubrication intervals obtained fromdiagram 1 should be reduced accordingly ifany of the following conditions existtf, operating hours Relubrication intervals Operating temperature, CIn severe, very dirty or damp environ mentsmore frequent relubrication might be necessary.Vibrations have an influence on grease lifebut their effects can not be quantified exactly, except when there is a noticeable increase inoperating temperature. The grease life, obtained from diagram 1,shows an exponential correlation with temperatures ranging from 55 to 100 C.Within that interval, when the temperatureincreases by 15 C, grease life is reduced byapproximately a factor of 2. Above 100 Cthe grease life is reduced more dramatically, and in an uncontrolled way. Below 40 C126107 EN.indd 1206-08-16 10.04.01

grease life drops gradually because of itsdiminished oil bleeding capabilities at lowertemperatures. The correction factors foradverse operating conditions are only approximate. For additional information, contact theSKF application engineering service.Relubrication procedureWhen relubricating, grease should be appliedwhile the bearing is rotating slowly until freshgrease escapes through the seals. Excessivepressure should be avoided, otherwise theseals may be damaged.Storing SKF ConCentra ball bearingunitsBecause they are treated with a rust preventive compound, SKF ConCentra ball bearingunits can be stored in their original unbrokenpackage for a number of years provided therelative humidity of the storeroom does notexceed 60 % and there are no great fluctuations in temperature. When stored for anextended period, these ball bearing units mayhave a higher initial torque than a newer unit.If not stored in their original packaging,SKF ConCentra ball bearing units should bewell protected against corrosion and contamination.BGreases for relubricationTo relubricate ConCentra ball bearing units,SKF recommends using its LGWA 2 grease, which is fully compatible with the originalgrease. SKF’s multipurpose LGMT 2 andLGMT 3 greases can also be used for relubrication as they are also fully compatible withthe original grease.Table 1Grease fill of SKF ConCentra ball bearingunitsPropertiesTechnicalspecificationsTable 2Mean diameter of the insert bearing, dmSKF ConCentraball bearing units thium-calciumsoap–mmBase oilMineral oilNLGI class2SY 25 PFSY 30 PFSY 35 PFSY 1. Mounting and dismountingTo realize maximum performance and helpprevent premature bearing damage, a cleanwork environment is essential. In addition,SKF recommends leaving the ConCentraball bearing unit in its original package untilimmediately before mounting so that it willnot be exposed to contaminants unnecessarily. For convenience, a specially designed hexagonal key with a torque indicator is suppliedwith each SKF ConCentra unit so that the grub(set) screws are not under or over-tightened(† fig. 1).The following instructions are valid for SKFConCentra ball bearing units with a plummerblock housing that will be installed on commercial shafts.Lubricate the shaft with a thin coat oflight oil († step 2).Mount any necessary components onthe shaft, between the unit positions.Clean the base of the unit and the support surface († step 3). Be sure thesupport surface is flat. If the unit elevation must be adjusted with shims, theshims must extend the full length andwidth of the base of the unit.Slide the unit onto the shaft and intoposition – with the mounting side facing outward († step 4). Bolt the unitsecurely to the support.Position the mounting collar so thata grub (set) screw is directly oppositethe split in the adapter.Hold the short end of the hexagonalkey and tighten the screws a 1/2 turneach according to the mounting pattern († fig. 2). Product data – generalDimensionsThe boundary dimensions of SKF ConCentraball bearing units with plummer block housings conform to ISO 3228:1993, ANSI/ABMA14-1995 and JIS B 1557-1995, whereappropriate. The units are dimensionally interchangeable with Y-bearing plummer block units inthe SY series.TolerancesThe tolerances for the shaft centre height H1(† fig. 1) above the support surface are 0,25 mm for metric units with a borediameter up to and including 40 mm andfor all inch size units 0,30 mm for larger metric units. The tolerance for the shaft centre heightcorresponds to the values specified inISO 3228:1993.For metric SKF ConCentra ball bearingunits, the tolerances of the bearing outsidediameter and the housing bore seating havebeen selected so that the bearing can notmove (wander) in its seating, but can compensate for initial misalignment.Shaft centre heightBearings for inch shafts are mountedwith a clearance fit in the housing. To preventmovement of the bearing in its seating(wandering) the outer ring is equipped withan anti-rotation pin († fig. 2).Internal clearanceSKF ConCentra ball bearing units are produced as standard with radial internal clearance to Group 3 according to ISO 9628:1992.The clearance values are provided in table 1and are valid for unmounted bearing unitsunder zero measuring load.SpeedsSKF ConCentra ball bearing units aredesigned for applications with relatively highspeeds. The speed ratings are only limited bythe permissible circumferential speed of theseal lip on its counter surface. The limitingspeeds are listed in the product tables.Anti-rotation pinFig. 1SealsSKF ConCentra ball bearing units areequipped, as standard, with two robust“Superagriseals”, each is inserted in a recessin the outer ring on both sides of the bearing. These seals consist of a pressed sheet steelwasher with a acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber(NBR) lip vulcanized onto its inner surface. The steel washer forms a narrow gap with thecylindrical surface of the inner ring shoulderto provide efficient protection against coarsecontaminants. To enhance the sealing effectwithout increasing friction, plain steel flingersare added outside the integral “Superagriseal”(† fig. 3).The seals are suitable for operating temperatures ranging from –40 to 100 C andwill withstand brief temperature peaks ofup to 120 C. However, the latter will havea detrimental effect on the service life ofthe grease fill.Seal designFig. 2Fig. 3) 166107 EN.indd 1606-08-16 10.04.03

Load carrying abilityof the housingsThe housings are made of grey cast ironEN-GJL HB195 according to EN 1561:1997and can withstand the same dynamic andstatic loads as the SKF ConCentra insert bearing.Equivalent loadsThe loads acting on SKF ConCentra ball bearing units can be calculated according to thelaws of mechanics. If the load F fulfils therequirements for the basic dynamic or staticload ratings, i.e. the load is constant in magnitude and direction and acts radially, thenP F and the load may be inserted directlyin the equations. In all other cases equivalentbearing loads must be calculated.Table 1Radial internal clearanceBore diameterddover incl. overincl.Radialinternalclearancemin maxmminμm–3040304050–1 3/161 1/21 3/161 1/2223283041465150–––22 7/162 7/162 15/1638466171Table 2Calculation factors for SKF ConCentra ballbearing unitsRelativeaxial loadCalculation factors14 541,751,621,46C1,31,141Equivalent dynamic loadP FrP 0,46 Fr Y Fawhen Fa/Fr ewhen Fa/Fr ewhereP equivalent dynamic bearing load, kNFr actual radial bearing load, kNFa actual axial bearing load, kNY axial load factor for the bearinge limiting value for Fa/FrThe factor Y and the limiting value e requiredto calculate the equivalent bearing load forSKF ConCentra ball bearing units depend onthe relationship f0 Fa/C0, where f0 is a calculation factor; in the case of SKF ConCentra unitsf0 14 († table 2).Table 3Designation scheme of SKF ConCentra ball bearing unitsExamplesIf P0 Fr, P0 Fr should be used.SYSY601.3/4PFPF/AHIdentification of housing and materialSY–Plummer block housing according to ISO 3228:1993Grey cast ironIdentification of size2560Equivalent static loadP0 0,6 Fr 0,5 FaSY 60 PFSY 1.3/4 PF/AH1.2.15/16Bearing units for metric shafts: uncoded in millimetres25 mm bore diameterto60 mm bore diameterBearing units for inch shafts: uncoded in fractionalinches1 in 25,400 mm bore diameterto2 15/16 in 74,612 mm bore diameterIdentification of inserted bearingDesignationsThe complete designation for an SKFConCentra ball bearing unit consists of housing series identification size identification supplementary designations, identifyingdesign, seal and other features.PFBall bearing with SKF ConCentra stepped sleeveBall bearing with Superagriseals and additional plain flingerson both sidesOther featuresAHAnti-rotation pin, solid feet and loose alignment torqueTable 3 describes each part of the designationin the order that it appears.176107 EN.indd 1706-08-16 10.04.03
