GivingThanksSpecial Edition 2020Fundraising News for Our Donors Who Are Making a DifferenceCOVID-19 survivorapplauds exceptionalcare she received atMidState Medical CenterBy: Cheryl J. BelomiziClaudine Primack was admitted toMidState Medical Center in earlyApril for a bowel obstruction andwas told she would need emergencysurgery. As if that wasn’t badenough, things quickly took anunexpected turn. Prior to surgery,Hartford HealthCare tested Primackfor COVID-19, which came backpositive. After surgery, Primack ended up inthe ICU at MidState due to herCOVID-19 diagnosis. Primack saysbeing in the ICU without visits fromher family made the situationespecially hard, but says thecompassionate people at MidStatereally helped her along in her fightagainst the virus.“It’s the kind of spirit you don’t seeeverywhere,” Primack explained.“The superior care you want in ahospital is what impressed methe most.”Primack says she was blown away bythe encouragement she receivedfrom everyone directly andindirectly involved in her care. Fromthe people emptying the garbagewho would tell her to hang in there;the café workers trying to find andadjust to her special restricted diet;the nurses who checked on herconstantly telling her she would getbetter and to keep up the good work;the physical therapists who cheeredher on each time she took five steps;the chaplain who called to say aprayer with her every day; and theAbove, left: Primack’s dog, Jersey; right, COVID-19 Survivor Claudine Primacksocial worker who updated herhusband on a consistent basis theyhave all made a lasting impact.Primack says she remembers sharingstories with her medical team –specifically about her rescue dog, named Jersey. One day she woke upfrom a deep sleep and noticed adrawing of a dog on the window ofthe door in her room that read,“Jersey said, get well!”“This was just one of the momentsthat kept me motivated to get better,”Primack said.Primack was discharged fromMidState on May 7 – after being inthe hospital for a month. But beforeshe could leave, there was a littlesurprise. MidState colleagues linedthe hallway, cheering her on as shewas wheeled out of the hospital.“Around every corner was someoneapplauding and shouting words ofencouragement,” Primack recalls. “Itwas so touching, not only for me, butfor the entire staff.”Primack says her transition homewas completely seamless. Shereceived care from HartfordHealthCare at Home and waseventually able to return to work, remotely. Jersey was happy to haveher back home as well. Primack saysshe continues to think fondly ofeveryone at MidState who was partof her care.“They were all so caring andcompassionate,” Primack said.“From admission to recovery – it wasthe best experience I’ve ever hadat a hospital.”A personal note from ClaudinePrimack: I want to express myheartfelt gratitude to all of the staffthat I dealt with on a daily basis. Myfamily and I are eternally gratefulfor the life-saving, superior care thatI received.
