Take Me Out to the BallGameBy Chuck CookEleven club members took the trip to see ourD-Backs play on Aug. 12th. We lost thegame 7-6, but had a great time. We had achance to ride the light rail in Phoenix and ofcourse got to enjoy ballpark food.Sharon Laird led the group and brought herbaseball glove to protect us from linedrives. Also along were the Martins, Ulmers,Conrads, Mitchells and Cooks. The Martinswere the big winners in Home Run Lotto (itpaid for Gary’s beer) and the Conradscollected at the end of the game becausethey held the envelope at the last out.Several members had not been to ChaseField before and were in awe of an enclosedstadium with great A.C.I think we will make it an annual trip. Maybenext year we will sit in the All You Can Eatsection?ABTO Tour UpdateOur trip to PHX to see layouts of our friends atABTO is set for Nov 7th. Here is a letter fromJohn up there who is in charge of theplanning. Mark your calendars and save thedate!Everything is shaping up. The schedule at thistime includes visiting 5 or 6 layouts in NW andCentral Phoenix. You will visit three layouts andend up at my layout for a barbecue lunch, livesteam demonstration on the club’s steam tablein the back of my 1/2 acre lot, plus ademonstration of the 1:32 scale MTH on mylayout proper. We also will have a flea market atour place. After lunch, you will visit 1 or 2 morelayouts, plus one in Casa Grande on your wayhome (optional). It is right off the I-10 and easyto get to.Can you arrive here as early as 9:00 for the firstlayout in Goodyear where light breakfast snackswill be available? That would give us about 30minutes at each of the morning layouts with 2030 minutes driving time in between. Then minewould take longer because of the addedactivities. You should be on your way homeby 2:30.We will finalize the details after the Boardmeeting on Sept 16 and I will send you theinformation for you to distribute to the clubmembers.Vice President’s ReportI hope everyone had a great summer andare well rested to resume our clubactivities. A Very Special TrainBy Willis FaggAs many of you know, we have two greatgrandsons; William who is 11 years old and livesin Oklahoma and 9 year-old Caedan who liveshere in Tucson. Both have been my rail fanssince a very early age, but especially Williamwho has recently been accumulating equipmentin hopes of having his own garden railroadsometime in the future. We were thrilled whenthey both, along with our son (William’s dad),joined us for their first garden railwayconvention in Denver this summer.During the convention, William was very intenton purchasing a boxcar “for his collection”.Additionally, Caedan was committed topurchasing his own car with his own money.Dottie and I were not sure why Caedan wanteda car other than he does have a starter set heuses at Christmas time. Perhaps he was wantingto keep up with his cousin.Fast forward to mid-August when Dottie and Iwere preparing for a very special event, our 50thanniversary. Actually our anniversary date isreally early September but in order to get ourson to attend we needed to schedule thecelebration early. The event was really a fullweekend with the official party on Saturdayevening. William and his dad arrived onThursday and spent the afternoon at Caedan’shouse working on a “special project”.On Friday we invited all of our out-of-townguests to our home for a “pre-party party” tothank them for making the effort to help uscelebrate. As the evening progressed andsunset approached the boys invited everyoneoutside where they had been running trains. Ascan be seen in the photos, one of my engineswas adorned with congratulatory signs for theoccasion. Additionally the train included twonew cars which just happened to be thosepurchased in Denver. The cars were speciallydecorated with signage and interesting lookingLED lighting. As darkness fell, the lighting systemwas activated and what a show it was.The lights (both on top and the underside of thecars) have the ability to display multiple colorsand patterns. The light display is controlled via awebsite menu on our IOS devices and a Wi-Filink using our personal network. As wasexplained to us later, William was responsiblefor the concept. Caedan was brought on boardduring our trip to Denver where the cars werepurchased. The system, electronics andsoftware was developed by our son withconsiderable help from William, who is learninghardware design but is already a capableprogrammer. The boys had a great time demonstrating theirgift to us and everyone in attendance wasimpressed. It truly was a special train.

SIDETRACKEDIf you ever find yourself in northern California,be sure to visit the Sonoma TrainTown Railroad, one mile south of the Plaza in Sonoma.INTERESTING TRAIN LINKSHave you seen the Tucson Garden RailwayKids Club information on the Tucson BotanicGardens web site? It’s great press for ourclub Thanks to whomever got it publishedthere!A Quick ReminderOur grandchildren loved riding the train alongthe 4 mile track, over bridges, and by miniaturevillages. They had lots of fun feeding the goats at thetrain station, but the alpacas were tooaggressive for the little children.Beginning with the September meeting, theBoard Meeting minutes will not be publishedin the monthly newsletter, BUT will beavailable on our TGRS web site (see below):
