Ourvision is that every SolomonIslander is healthy, happy andself reliant.Celebrating thirty three yearsof working in the villageOn May 6th the Solomon Islandsfirst indigenous NGO, the SolomonIslands Development Trust (SIDT)celebrated its 33rd anniversary.The event was celebrated withpartners, community advocacymembers, provincial drama groups,tenants, village people and supporters at the Minim Nao Haus inNew Chinatown.SIDT has faced challenges andhardships through its 33 years, buthas always strived towards its goalof improving the quality of villageliving.The Director of SIDT, Mr Longden Manedika, paid tribute to theorganisation’s founder the Late DrJohn Roughan and to other fellowemployees who have also gonebefore while also thanking pastand present employees of SIDT fortheir contributions.In reflecting on the work of SIDT’sfounder, Mr Manedika said the firstNGO was born in the Solomon Islands when a group of plannersand implementers met in a vilContinue on page 2.

We can be reminded thatthe village setting operates autonomously to ensure the people arebeing served. To this regard whenindividuals organize, plan and implement their strategies in such ahistory it means a certain group ofindividuals are putting their headstogether. That was the first NGO inour beloved country,” Mr ManedikaMonthly Newspagesaid.“With more and more international organisations coming to Solomon Islands, we at SIDT maintainthat the core of Solomon Islandsis the village. And we believe thateverything needs to be done toprotect and improve it so that ournatural beauty, resources and thetraditional governance systemsand their action plans are paid dueattention”.In its 33 years of helping villagepeople, SIDT has worked in nine ofthe ten provinces establishing advocacy committees, drama groupsand bridging the gap between vil-website:www.sidt.org.sblages and higher levels of government. Renbel is the only provinceSIDT is still to work with.Mr Manedika called for a clearlink to be established between theGovernment, NGOs, donor partners, churches, stakeholders andthe people of Solomon Islands.“It’s not about being first ratherit’s about serving our village peoplebetter,” he said.SIDT is assisted in its work withfunding from a wide range of donorpartners including the EU, AFAP,FSPI.Community Helpers set to workwith their communitiesAround 60 community Helpers(CHs), provincial team leaders andtheir deputies have completed a 4week training course being facilitated by the Solomon Islands Development Trust.RDP 2 is a five year multi-donor project which is scheduled tobe rolled out to all constituenciesacross the country, commencing2015. It has funding from the WorldBank, Australia, the EU and UNbodies.The training courses were designed to teach and equip Community Helpers on how to communicate, work, and solve problemseffectively when working with people in their communities.Community Helper Mrs RoseMary from Renbel Province acknowledged RDP and SIDT forthe joint initiative in conducting thetraining.She said CHs have learned manyhelpful skills and knowledge inworking with communities duringthe training and assured fundersthat they would try their very bestto live up to the expectations in doing their work honestly with transparency.Community Helper Ms UniceTarai from Central Province alsoremind CHs the main objective ofRDP is to improve better infrastructure and agriculture services to therural people.2NewspageClosing of RDP community Helper training-certificate awards“Thus with the skills and knowledge learnt we should work together to improve services and thelivelihoods of the rural populace inthe country,” she said.SIDT director, Mr Longden Manedika said for many years SIDT hadbeen outspoken about improvingthe quality of village living in Solomon Islands.“Village living and the village setting is the core of this country,”he said, “It is where 80 percent ofour people live. We must keep itstrong.”The director said there was a‘good fit’ between the RDP andSIDT with both institutions focusingon the village and improving the village standards and development.He urged all CHs to put into practice what they have learned during their four weeks training withSIDT as they were mandated bythe Government to help implementits development plans in our ruralareas.

May issue 2015Monthly Newspagewebsite:www.sidt.org.sbGovernment recognizes the work of CSOs/NGOsIn his keynote address opening the CSO open day, the UnderSecretary of the Ministry of HomeAffairs Mr Fred Irofiu’au said theGovernment had a special interestin coordinating CSOs and NGOs inSolomon Islands.Mr Irofiu’au said the Ministry, asthe responsible Ministry overseeing the welfare of CSOs, encourages building a good network andworking partnership.He assured all CSOs that theNGO Bill currently before the Attorney General Chambers, reflectedthe Government’s commitment inrecognizing the importance of theircontribution to national development.Mr Irofiu’au urged all CSOs tocontinue with their good work theyhave started and that the Government is willing to provide support toenhance their activities.“People need to know the workof CSOs and NGOs in Solomon Islands and so the CSO Open Dayhelps promote the work of CSOsin the country. We all should worktogether to make Solomon islandsa better place to live in,” he concluded.Under Secretary of Home Affairs Fred Irofiu’au visiting the CSO stall dispalysVillagers learn how to write project proposalWorkshop participants during a training session with facilitator Mr Edwin BiraSamasodu workshop participantshave completed a program of proposal writing training facilitated bySIDT through its Bridging the Gap(BTG) Project.The program is the third cycleof training in the BTG Project activities and follows the initial consultation meetings, and workshopsessions on Participatory Rural Appraisal and Effective Meetings.The SIDT facilitator Mr Augustine Todonga said the training wasaimed at giving participants thecapacity to take the initiative in designing their own proposal to address their priority issues and problems. These had been identified aspart of the earlier training.He said the training presenteda set plan of solutions to addressissues identified and prioritized bythe community.Continue page 5.Newspage3

May issue 2015Monthly Newspagewebsite:www.sidt.org.sbThe CSO OpenDay a success& learningexperienceA three day Civil Society Organizations Open Day event was heldat the National Art Gallery from the26th - 28th of May.The event was hosted by the Development Services Exchange withthe support of Oxfam Solomon Islands.The Civil Society OrganizationsOpen Day is an event that marksand celebrates efforts and hardwork NGOs has contributed towards development of SolomonIslands.This year’s CSO theme is“Strengthening Collaboration withour Partners (Government, PrivateSector, Donors and Communities)for Sustainable Development Ac-Members of the public looking at informationbrochures dispalyed at the World Vision stalltions in Solomon Islands”.The Open Day activities includedan official opening, stalls, photoexhibitions, quizzes, dance performances and the CSO volleyballchallenge.The event was also aiming tohave an avenue open to the public and especially young peopleand students who were looking toenhance their knowledge and maywant to contribute national development.Freedom for West Papua – MoteOne of the highlights during thelaunching of the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) open day on the26th May was the appearance ofthe General Secretary for the United Liberation Movement for WestPapua Mr Octavianus Mote.In his remarks Mr Mote revealedthat in their 53 years of struggleto gain independence more than500,000 West Papuans have beenkilled or tortured by foreign rulers.He said that West Papua and itsway of life would be extinct in fiveyears from now if the resettlementprograms and policies of the Indonesian government were allowedto continue.This, he said, wasa powerful motivating factor for him to keep fighting for independence.“Whatever you have to do in WestPapua you have to have Indonesia’s involvement thus the questionis how can we solve these issues?Mr Mote urged Solomon Islanders to pray for our leaders not be4Newspagecause of the empty promises or thebilateral relationships we have butfor empowerment.“As Melanesians we could helpthose who are in need thus Solomon Islands could help WestPapua to become a member ofthe Melanesian Spearhead Group(MSG),” he said.“The Lord has chosen this placeto do what the country has to doand whatever the decision fromthe Prime Minister we will accept itwith respect. Attention to this meant that acommunity would have a much better chance of receiving funding fortheir preferred projects, Mr Todonga said.SIDT’s programs team is finalizing the Samasodu Sanitation Project proposal and on completion itwil be reviewed by the communitybefore being presented to provincial and national members and officials at a village forum proposedfor July 3rd.The BTG training is funded by theAustralia foundation for Asia andthe Pacific (AFAP).SPACE FOR HIREJamal Namo explains 4CA to Under-Secretary Home Affairs Mr Fred Irofiu’auSIDT attends CSO Open DayThe Solomon Islands Development Trust (SIDT) took part in theCivil Society Organizations (CSOs)Open Day organized by the Development Services Exchange (DSE)from the 26th to 28th May 2015.SIDT was represented by itsmedia team, AVI volunteer, JohnWestland, Coordinator of the 4CAProject Mr Jamal Namo and SIDTvolunteers.SIDT also showcased its 33 yearsof activity including, open learningtools and educational documentaries of the voter awareness forthe National Election 2014 and the4CA Project.One of the highlights was the 4CAProject which attracted most interest.
