CHAPTER 1 – THE BASICS AND GETTING STARTEDWHAT IS SFXPC4.1.3?Figure 1: SFXPC4.1.3 Main WindowSFXPC4 is a Windows program that interfaces with a ShockWave 2 Module via a USB 2.0 full speed(12MBits/s) interface. The USB cable is identical to most digital camera USB cables so it is very likelythat you already have a suitable cable. If necessary, one can be purchased from us. The SFXPC4application allows the user to build and edit .sfx7 composite sound files that can be downloaded to theShockWave 2 module. It also allows the .sfx7 file stored in the module’s microSD Card to be uploadedto the PC where it may be edited and re-downloaded.The microSD Card in the ShockWave 2 module may be removed and inserted into either the microSDto SD card adapter that comes with the module or an optional USB microSD Card reader. Allconfiguration operations that can be performed on the ShockWave 2 with its microSD inside can beperformed with the card inserted into the SD card adapter or USB card reader, with the exception ofplaying sounds on the ShockWave 2 module. The downloading and uploading of .sfx7 files will occurmuch faster using the microSD Card in the SD card adapter or USB card reader.SFXPC4.1.3 Software ManualPage 4 of 63 Model SoundsTM Inc.Published : November, 2018

Individual sounds cannot be removed or added without downloading the complete file which is acomposite of all the sound clips, together with configuration data. This is done in order to maintain thedata integrity of the complete set of sounds and their configuration.SFXPC4 interfaces to the Audacity sound file editor for editing at the waveform level. If you chose toinstall the Audacity sound editor that is included on the microSD Card and you installed it in its defaultlocation, you can select one or more sound clips in the Sound Clip List and edit them directly usingAudacity.INSTALLING ON YOUR PCSFXPC4 is a .NET Windows application which requires the .NET 4.0 runtime engine. The .NET 4.0runtime engine is included as part of Windows 8/7 operating systems, but should be installed if you arerunning Windows Vista or XP and it has not been installed already. The .NET 4.0 runtime engine is included on the microSD Card and is installed along with SFXPC4 if youcheck its checkbox in the installer. You must have Administrator privileges to install .NET.Follow these steps to install SFXPC4 and optional components on your PC :1. Insert the microSD Card into either the microSD to SD card adapter that comes with the moduleor an optional USB microSD Card reader and insert that into your PC.2. Navigate to the SHOCKWAVESD disk and double click on the SFXPC4.1.3Setup.exe program.3. Follow the steps and answer the prompts as the setup Installer program proceeds.4. If you select any Optional components, such as Audacity, they will be installed after all theSFXPC4 and .NET files have been installed.CONNECTING YOUR SHOCKWAVE 2 MODULE TO THE PC1. Switch on your radio transmitter and then receiver when it is connected to the ShockWave 2module. The red/green LEDs on the sound module will flash rapidly for up to six seconds whileit is waiting for the receiver to initialize and produce valid outputs. This wait period isadjustable down to as little as one second using the Control Panel- Hardware Tab.2. Connect a mini-B USB cable between the module and your PC. The mini-B USB connector on theShockWave 2 module is the same type as used on many digital cameras and other mobileequipment, so you probably already have a suitable cable. The red LED should flash slowly. The ShockWave 2 module can be USB powered while connected to the PC.SFXPC4.1.3 Software ManualPage 5 of 63 Model SoundsTM Inc.Published : November, 2018

Note : The USB port powers the ShockWave low level circuitry, but not the audio poweramplifier which requires its own 4.5 – 26 Volt power supply if you want to hear the soundfrom the module’s loudspeaker while it is connected to the PC.3. The ShockWave 2 module does not require any custom USB drivers – the USB drivers it uses arealready built into the computer’s operating system (OS). When the ShockWave 2 is plugged into the computer for the first time, the OS will automatically load the required drivers.Power up the Transmitter and Receiver First Before you Connect the USB CableWhilst the module will connect to the PC and be powered by the USB connection without thetransmitter and receiver being connected and powered on, you will not be able to perform any R/Crelated activity in the SFXPC4.1.3 Software application. If you then connect the receiver to the module with the transmitter switched on, and the USB cableis still connected, the module firmware will stop and the red and green LEDs will come on. Thisindicates a temporary firmware halt since the R/C code was not properly initialized before the USBconnection was made. Remove power to the module and re-start with the transmitter/receiver andsound module powered on first before the USB cable is connected.SFXPC4 FILE FORMATSSFXPC4 supports .WAV and .MP3 files. WAV files are uncompressed audio format files and are higherquality than MP3 files, although they take up more space. However, with the microSD card suppliedwith the ShockWave 2, storage space is no longer an issue. When adding a .WAV or .MP3 file toSFXPC4 it has to be of the required format for the module so SFXPC4 will automatically convert the fileto the required format. – i.e. 16 bit signed samples, monophonic, sample rate 4100 or 22050samples/second. The composite sound file that is downloaded to the module is a .sfx7 file type. The ShockWave 2 module can have its playback sample rate set to one of two audio sample rates 44100, or 22050 samples/second. This is set in the Control Panel- Hardware Tab. The sounds areloaded in 16 bit format, and 16 bits at 44100 samples/second is CD sound quality.SFXPC4.1.3 Software ManualPage 6 of 63 Model SoundsTM Inc.Published : November, 2018

THE SHOCKWAVE 2 SOUND MODULE AND ITS MICROSD CARDThe ShockWave 2 module uses a removable microSD Card to store its digitized sounds, as well asvarious configuration and hardware settings. Thus it is very easy to add or change the sounds on aShockWave 2 module by simply plugging in a different microSD Card containing the new files. The microSD Card connector on the ShockWave 2 module is a push-push type. You push the card in toinsert it and push it again to remove it. When inserting the microSD Card, make sure it is pushed fullyhome so that the latching mechanism prevents it from accidentally being removed. To remove the card, push it in again and it will spring out so that it can be removed fully. It isrecommended to put a piece of adhesive tape over the microSD Card and its connector to preventaccidentally removal of the card. When the ShockWave 2 module has its microSD Card inserted and it is connected to a Windows PCthrough its USB port, it will appear as a “USB Mass Storage Device”, i.e. a new removable “hard drive”will appear in Windows Explorer. The name of this “drive”, or its disk label, is ALWAYS“SHOCKWAVESD”.DO NOT re-label the ShockWave 2 microSD Card as any other name. The “SHOCKWAVESD” disk labelis searched for by the SFXPC4 Software to detect the necessary files on the module. The ShockWave 2 module can be connected to the PC either with or without its microSD Card. If themicroSD Card is missing, you will get a warning dialogue box, but this is for information only. Thedialogue box can be closed and the module will still be detected. However, the Red and Green LEDSwill now flash together alternately to indicate that it is in USB MODE, but with the microSD Cardmissing. If the microSD Card is in the module when the USB is connected, the Red LED alone will flashslowly to indicate that it is in USB MODE, and with the microSD Card present.HOW TO OPEN .SFX7 SOUND SET FILESWhen you want to make changes to any of the .sfx7 files stored on the ShockWave 2 microSD Cardusing SFXPC4.1.3, DO NOT edit them directly on the microSD card whether it is inserted into the soundmodule or inserted into a card reader on your PC. ALWAYS make a copy of that file and store it locallyon your computer and open the copied file using SFXPC4.1.3. Especially NEVER access the .sfx7 file onthe microSD card using SFXPC4.1.3 while the card is inserted into the sound module.SFXPC4.1.3 Software ManualPage 7 of 63 Model SoundsTM Inc.Published : November, 2018

FILE STRUCTURE ON THE SHOCKWAVE 2 MICROSD CARDThe files on the ShockWave 2 microSD Card must be in a certain format and structure. In the microSDCard Root Folder there is the following file:1. SELECT YOUR SOUNDSET HERE.txt. This file should contain two lines as follows:One line naming the folder containing the .sfx7 file you wish to use.One line naming the .sxf7 file in that folder that you want the ShockWave 2 module to use.Example:ShockWave 2SoundSets\AircraftSpitfireMerlinSoundSet.sfx7In this example, when powered up, the ShockWave 2 module will expect there to be a .sfx7 file named“SpitfireMerlinSoundSet.sfx7” in the ShockWave 2SoundSets\Aircraft folder on the card.In this way you can have many .sxf7 sound sets on the microSD Card and they can be changed at will bysimply editing the SELECT YOUR SOUNDSET HERE.txt. Each time this information is changed themodule should be powered down and then powered up again.TRANSFERRING FILES BETWEEN THE PC AND THE SHOCKWAVE 2 SOUND MODULEIf you want to transfer files and configuration data between the PC and the ShockWave 2 module, it ishighly recommended to remove the microSD Card from the module and insert it into your PC using anavailable microSD card reader slot on your PC, or an optional USB microSD Card reader. This is recommended since the file transfer rate will be much higher if the microSD Card is plugged intoa Card Reader than if you rely on the ShockWave 2 USB Mass Storage Device.Launch the SFXPC4 application AFTER the microSD Card has been plugged into your PC. The SFXPC4application will search all “disk” drives for one that has the label “SHOCKWAVESD”. You must haveONLY ONE drive with the label “SHOCKWAVESD”.If the ShockWave 2 module is connected to the PC and any sound is played on the module either usingthe R/C inputs, or using the SFXPC4.1.3 SW program, the USB Mass Storage Device functionality will besuspended so no file operations can be carried out through the USB interface to the sound module.SFXPC4.1.3 Software ManualPage 8 of 63 Model SoundsTM Inc.Published : November, 2018
