Sacrament of MarriageIntroduction and General InformationWelcome! As you prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of Matrimony, the Pastoral staff of the Divine SaviorParish & St. Ann Parish shares your joy.We are providing this information to assist you with the many details of preparing you for the worthy reception of theSacrament of Matrimony so that you may enjoy a prayerful celebration that re lects the Christian values we hold as Catholics.You will meet with the priest or deacon approximately fourtimes, however sometimes it may take additional meetings. Thefollowing information is a general overview of the process to receive the Sacrament of Marriage:1The couple must contact the rectory at least six (6) monthsin advance of the proposed marriage day and make an appointment with the priest or deacon. This irst appointment willbe for information-orientation only. At this irst meeting with thepriest, or deacon, the couple will state their intention to marry.Please note that at your irst meeting, it is of the utmost importance that you inform the priest if either of you have beenpreviously married in any manner, civil ceremony (Judge or Justice of the Peace), Wedding Chapel or any church. Also at thisirst appointment the couple will be asked to acquire records oftheir sacraments of Baptism (updated copy), First Communion,and Con irmation.2At the second meeting the couple must present the certi icates of the sacraments of initiation, take the pre-nuptial inventory, and also take the assessment tool called Foccus. By thissecond meeting, the couple will have been provided with the information necessary to book their “Engaged Encounter WeekendRetreat” and their “Natural Family Planning Workshop”(NFP).Your wedding date will be recon irmed on this appointment. Preparation to Celebrate de Sacrament of Marriagethe next appointment the Foccus results and Wedding packetwill also be reviewed.3For the third appointment the couple must each bring twodirect family members to sign a “Pre-nuptial WitnessForm” (this document states that the person is free to marry).The couple will be reminded to apply for their “Marriage License” at the County Register-Recorder’s Of ice. On this day thecouple will receive a booklet for the Liturgy Planning of the HolyMass and the date for the Ceremony Rehearsal. The ceremonyfee must be paid off by this time.4By the fourth appointment the couple must bring their Marriage License and their Liturgy Planning Booklet completed.On this day you will be reminded to come to the Sacrament ofReconciliation as preparation for the participation of the HolyMass on the wedding day.Documents Required for MarriageThe following documents are required to be turned in to ourparish of ice as soon as possible: Baptismal Certi icate – An updated baptismal certi icatemust be issued from the church of your baptism within thelast six months. We will keep this copy in our ile. First Communion and Con irmation Certi icate – A copyof your original certi icates must be kept in your ile. Witness Forms Stating Freedom to Marry – Two formsare required for each person, showing the person is free tomarry in the Catholic Church. Civil License – This must be obtained from the Los AngelesCounty Recorder’s Of ice at (800)201-8999 or websitewww.lavote.net thirty (30) days before the wedding date; ablood test is no longer necessary. Preparation to Celebrate de Sacrament of MarriageLos Angeles Archdiocese Marriage Preparation ProgramIn addition to several personal interviews with the priest ordeacon who will be witnessing your wedding, the Los AngelesArchdiocese requires the bride and groom attend an approvedmarriage preparation program:Attend an Engaged Encounter Weekend – This is a weekend forcouples preparing for marriage. While it is spent with other couples, private time is available to build a closer relationshipthrough honest and intense conversations on important aspectsof married life. This is the preferred and required marriage preparation option for the couple. The fee and the dates for thisweekend will be provided by the priest, deacon or our front ofice. These dates ill up quickly, therefore, register as soon aspossible. You must call and make arrangements at (888) 2673660. Please log in for more info at http://www.ceeo la.org.OrAttend a Marriage Encounter Weekend – This is only for couples that are already married civilly. The priest, deacon or ourfront of ice will provide fee and the dates information about thisweekend. These dates ill up quickly, therefore, please register assoon as possible; one-day program valid only on special circumstances.AndWorkshop Natural Family Planning – Natural Family Planningis an educational program that helps couples plan the size oftheir families. It teaches them to observe record and interpretfemale body changes related to ovulation. Preparation to Celebrate de Sacrament of MarriageRehearsal and CoordinatorThe church is the House of God.Therefore, respectful behavior isexpected at all times, even at the wedding rehearsals. Please avoid any unnecessary socializing or loud conversations. No food or gum allowed. An upscale-casual dress code and punctualitymust be observed at the rehearsal day(Women: no beach sandals, no shorts,no miniskirts, no sleeveless blouses or revealing clothing, nohats etc. Men: No shorts, no beach sandals, no sleeveless shirts,no jeans, nor saggy pants, etc.); you must be on time for the rehearsal—if the family is late, time cannot be compensated. Arrangements for the rehearsal are to be made through the wedding coordinator or directly by the of ice. The wedding rehearsaltakes thirty (30) minutes. A wedding coordinator may contactyou to remind you about the rehearsal and will assist you at yourwedding ceremony. Rehearsals are normally scheduled the Friday evening before your wedding date at:5:00 p.m.5:45 p.m.6:30 p.m.7:15 p.m.On the First Friday of the month we have exposition of theBlessed Sacrament in the Church. The rehearsal would be on theThursday before your wedding day at the same scheduled time.Punctuality is expected at the rehearsal. Only thirty (30) minutesare set aside for each rehearsal. All members of the wedding party are expected to attend the rehearsal. Please ask them to be inthe church ifteen (15) minutes before rehearsal. Any tardinesswill reduce your available rehearsal time. Preparation to Celebrate de Sacrament of Marriage If the bride or groom is more than ifteen (15) minutes late inarriving at the church, the ceremony will be shortened to vowsonly (Rite of Marriage) instead of Mass. If any other member of the wedding party is not present at thescheduled time of your wedding, the ceremony will start without them. Limousines may be parked in front of the church while the ceremony is being celebrated. Please observe local traf ic & parking rules.Punctuality must be observed out of respect for the other weddings that day, and because of the other pastoral responsibilitiesof the priest. A maximum of one hour is allotted for each wedding. Once the bride, groom and wedding party have exited, thefront of the church must be cleared within ten (10) minutes. Thewedding party may remain on either side of the church for pictures.Liturgy Planning of the Wedding MassIn the planning of the celebration of the Mass, we will providea booklet to help plan the readings for mass (choice of readings) and explain the symbols (rings, coins, lasso, etc.) commonlyused at every wedding Mass. The irst copy is free, however forlost or additional copies there is a 5 charge.Symbols at the Celebration of MatrimonyThe wedding Mass celebration may include the use and exchange of Religious Symbols. The most common symbolsare rings, coins (arras), Laso (cord), Bible and Rosary, ReligiousMedals, and the Bouquet of Flowers to the Blessed VirginMary. Unity candles are no longer used at this parish. Preparation to Celebrate de Sacrament of Marriagereceive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) prior to thewedding. Because of the large number of weddings performed atthe church, we cannot, unfortunately, hear the confessions of thewedding party on the night of the rehearsal. Please ask yourwedding party to go to their local church prior to the rehearsaland receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation up to one month prior to the wedding. Please take parish bulletin for informationabout times and dates of confessions.Your Wedding Party/Dress CodePlease instruct your wedding party to arrive at the church at least thirty (30)minutes prior to the ceremony. Also, pleasemake certain that the dress code in thechurch is formal. The limit of couples foryour wedding party is seven (7) bridesmaidsand seven (7) groomsmen; the main focusshould be on the couple and their sacramental encounter with Jesus. In addition, thereare to be no more than four (4) children inthe wedding party and those children are tobe over ive years of age. Please do not chewgum, eat nor drink at the rehearsal or at theceremony. This applies to the entire wedding party and to yourguests.Dress Code –Bride and bridesmaids’ dresses must be of a modestcut (no sleeveless, no bare shoulders, no strapless dresses andno cleavage) because you are in the house of the Lord. Shawlsare permitted as long as they are not transparent. Groom mustwear formal dress attire. (No jeans, saggy pants, no sandals, etc.)Video and Photography Photographer for your Posed Pictures–We regret that due tothe need for close scheduling the wedding party may notcome back into the church after the service for pictures. Preparation to Celebrate de Sacrament of MarriagePlease follow the pertinent guidelines for the photographer andvideo person: Photographer and/or the person video recording must dressappropriately for a formal and sacred occasion. Beach sandals (or similar), shorts, jeans, sleeveless shirt or blouse ordress, T-shirts are not allowed. We suggest that the photographer and/or person video recording attend rehearsal of the ceremony to become familiarwith our church. Please do not interfere or interrupt the wedding coordinator at the time of the rehearsal. Because of the well-lighted space in the church, no lash isallowed except in the procession in and out the church. Please have wedding party and invited guests restrict theirmovement as much as possible, so they do not distract thebride and groom and the priest/deacon during the celebration of the ceremony. Pictures from the choir loft are permitted. Please respect thespace given to musicians or others during the ceremony. Do not walk up the steps (second & third level) in the Sanctuary to take pictures. You may walk to the irst level (one stepup from the loor. Photography and video must be done avoiding unnecessarynoise or conversations. We reserve the right to stop any taking of photography orvideo-recording if the conduct and/or dress code of the person in charge is not in line with the guidelines (please see“Your Wedding Party/Dress Code” chapter).FlowersThe church is decorated with lowers on the sanctuary, bythe tabernacle, (up to four lower arrangements) and onecenter piece on the foot of the altar. There is no lowers duringLent and Advent. The scattering of lower petals and like insideor outside of the church is not permitted ( lower girls). Preparation to Celebrate de Sacrament of Marriageyou prepare your wedding we please ask you to follow the pertinent guidelines for loral arrangements in our church. You arewelcome to come and look over our church to get ideas for yourarrangements: Up to ive (5) lower arrangements are permitted in the Sanctuary (where the Altar is); four (8) by the Tabernacle (two oneach side) and one at the foot of the Altar (in front). At thefront sides of the church we also have two additional side altars that could be decorated with lowers. Stands for lowerarrangements can only be used by the Tabernacle. No loral arches are permitted in the Sanctuary. Please try to inish setting up the lowers twenty (20)minutes before the ceremony. If lower arrangements are delivered earlier on the day of the celebration we are not responsible if damaged, lost and/or stolen). No runners of any kind are allowed in the center aisle. Please tag lowers with names for the bridal party (to avoidconfusion if taking them with you). Additional lowers may be used for the statue of Mary (smallbouquet) or for mothers at the sign of peace (single roses). Pew bows or lower arrangements are not allowed in thechurch pews. These mark the wood. Rubber bands, maskingtape or any other non-damaging tape may never be used. We reserve the right to refuse any lower arrangement and/or decorations that are not in line with our guidelines.Throwing Rice, Birdseed or Flower PetalsNo throwing of rice, birdseed, and lower petals beforeduring-after the wedding is permitted. These mentioneditems pose a de inite safety hazards.Candles (Unity Candle)There are restrictions on the use of candles due to Fire Department regulations. Preparation to Celebrate de Sacrament of MarriageMusicThe music at every wedding should re lect the sacredness ofthe Mass and the Sacrament of Matrimony. The songs andmusic should help the congregation to enter into prayer. Secularmusic or songs, though they may be popular, are not allowedduring the ceremony. The music is included in your donation; wehave musicians with lots of experience (organist or guitar player). If the services of solo musicians are to be used, it is important that their liturgical selections foster a deep sense ofprayer rather than one of entertainment. The music for yourwedding must be planned and approved with the assistance ofthe priest or musicians selected. Visit our website for more info.Dressing at the ChurchThe church does not have adequate facilities for the bridalparty to use as a dressing room. Before the ceremony, wewould like to suggest the bride to wait in the limousine until thewedding coordinator comes and gets her.Alcoholic BeveragesAlcoholic beverages of any sort or kind are not permitted onthe church property at any time; also, anyone who has beendrinking and/or is intoxicated in any way will not be permittedto participate in the ceremony. If either the bride or groom is intoxicated there will be no wedding.Offering for the ChurchThe customary donation for the church is 500. Once approved by the pastor, the out of boundary fee is 600(people not registered and/nor active at Divine Saviour Parishor St. Ann Parish). A portion of the donation should be given tothe church at your next meeting in order to secure a date andtime slot on the calendar. A non-refundable deposit of 100 isnecessary to reserve the date. The remainder should be submitted to the church no later than one (1) month prior to your wedding. This donation is not for the priest who performs the service. Preparation to Celebrate de Sacrament of MarriageSuggested donations – These donations may be an expression ofyour gratitude to the people who have assisted you in the preparation of your wedding: Priest/Deacon, Wedding Rehearsal Coordinator, or any other person who has been helpful to you.Cancellation – Should there be a cancellation of your wedding;the priest should be informed immediately. Inform the Rectorywithin ninety (90) days or more of your scheduled wedding dateand all money paid (except the 100 non-refundable deposit)will be refunded. A one hundred ( 100) dollar cancellation feewill be charged for less than ninety (90) days notice. Don’t forgetto inform the musicians.The Best Man and the Maid of HonorThese sponsors must be practicing Catholic and single ormarried in the Church. They must take the “Sponsor’sForm” for wedding ceremonies to their local pastor or associatepastor (priest) to sign. The sponsors must honor and live in theteachings of the Church and must be living their sacramental life,particularly receiving the Eucharist every Sunday and regularlycoming to the Sacrament of reconciliation.Final CommentsIt is the responsibility of the Bride and Groom to inform thewedding party, video & photographer, lower shop, and all involved in the planning of this religious ceremony. Actas de Primera Comunión y Con irmación – Copias de ambas actas son necesarias; documentos originales son vá lidos. Aun cuando conviven con otras parejas, tiempopersonal es dispuesto para que por medio de la conversació n lapareja dialogue sobre los aspectos del matrimonio. El costo y lasfechas para estos dı́as será n proveı́dos por el directamente en lostelé fonos incluidos. Estas fechas se llenan rá pido por lo que lepedimos se registren lo má s pronto posible. Preparación a Celebrar el Sacramento del Matrimonioiglesia que interrumpan el ambiente de oració n y respeto quedebe de existir; no alimentos ni chicles son permitidos. La formade vestir en los ensayos deberá ser deaspecto casual-formal (Mujeres: nosandalias, no pantalones cortos, no minifaldas, no blusas sin mangas o escotadas, no gorras o sombreros, etc. Los varones: no sandalias, no pantalones cortos, no pantalones de mezclilla, no pantalones lojos o pompados ni rotos, etc.)Ya que el ensayo dura (30) treinta minutos, la puntualidad es requerida. Arreglos para el ensayo sonhechos a travé s de la coordinadora de bodas o directamente hechos por la o icina. La coordinadora de bodas se comunicará para recordarles sobre la fecha y hora del ensayo (cortesı́a) y asistirles el dı́a de la ceremonia de su boda. Los ensayos son ordinariamente los viernes antes del dı́a de la boda con los siguienteshorarios:5:00 p.m.5:45 p.m.6:15 p.m.7:15 p.m.En los viernes primeros del mes tenemos la Exposició n del Santı́simo Sacramento. Por esta razó n los ensayos son transferidos aljueves anterior a la boda en los mismos horarios. Su puntualidades esperada el dı́a del ensayo y todos los miembros del cortejodeberá n de participar en el ensayo. Favor de estar en la entradade la iglesia quince (15) minutos antes del ensayo.
